Default K Frame presentation case?

I picked up a presentation case a while back.I assumed it was for a 6in N frame.Well I purchased a 6in 629-0 today and tried it in the case. It didn't fit, seemed to be to small in the grip area. I stuck a 6in Mdl 19 in and it fit like a glove.I was unaware Smith had a presentation case for the K frame except for the Texas Ranger set and the pictures I have seen don't have the cut outs in the insert. When were these made and what for?
Thanks
Chip

I think it would likely have been for a pre-model 14. I saw a cased one at a show in Salem, OR a few years back. Only K-frame case I ever saw like that.

I have 2 K-frame presentation cases for 4" guns. I got them in the early 1980's. The dealer that I purchased them from had received 6 of them from S&W. They are in the typical cardboard shipping carton. I don't have any idea what they were made for or why. I'm guessing extras from a special order commemorative.

S&W made commemorative 4" Mod 65's for San Diego PD in the early 80's that came with a nice wood presentation box and a pewter belt buckle that had the old police station on it.

Old thread sorry.
So, there would have never been a presentation case for an 8 3/8 K frame right? Guy claims he has one but I think it's an N frame.

I tried my 4" 629-0 in a presentation case that came with my 4" 29-2. It didn't fit. As you can see from the picture, my 629 turned out to be a bit longer than the 29, measuring about 1/8" longer. It's not much but enough that it wouldn't properly fit in the case. I would not have guessed that the two models were different barrel lengths. Anyone else experience this? The Standard Catalog doesn't seem to have any information for a 4 1/8" barrel model 629-0.

Would there have been a special size presentation case for the 629, or was this just a fluke, caused by whoever was cutting barrels that day?

S&W issued a directive in May 1975 (not sure how long it took to implement the change) to increase the length of all barrels from 4 inches to 4 1/4 inches. This was done because of a concern that firearms with a barrel length of less than 4 inches would become illegal. The actual length of most barrels is 4 1/8 inches. This probably explains the difference between your 629 and your 29-2.

Would love to see a picture or two of those, if you can swing it. Those would be nice for the old Dayton 14-2 if the barrel cutout is wide enough.

I'll take a picture and post it tomorrow. The case was for a 4" M19 or M66 - if I remember correctly.

Here are the pictures of my 4" K-frame Presentation Case. The case has an inner cardboard box and an outside shipping carton marked as "4" K-frame Presentation Case". The gun I put inside for the pictures is a M15 but the case if for a M19 or M66.

Default Presentation Case

I have that same case for my Model 19-4, California Highway Patrol Commemorative model. Yes, it does have a 6" barrel.
