Welcome to the Forum. What would you like to know about your knife? Dimensions and better pictures would help, like the length of the blade and the handle material. S&W put the company name on a number of non-firearm products including a series of fixed blade and folding knives.

The fact that your knife has been inexpertly sharpened as evidenced by the scratches on the blade mean it has very little collector value. The wear on the sheath also detracts from collector interest. However, it looks like a good knife for general use. Carry it and enjoy it. There are some quality knives made in Japan, my favorite Spydercos being one example.

Others with more knowledge of S&W knives will probably give you better information.

Interesting knife. I couldn't even find anything remotely similar in several Google searches.

Does it actually say Smith & Wesson anywhere on it or on anything that came with it?

Smith & Wesson has never actually manufactured their own knives as far as I know and yours is like none I've ever seen. Hopefully someone will come along who can identify it.

The second picture in the OP shows a mark "S&W" at the base of the blade. I assumed along with the poster that this indicated Smith and Wesson. Maybe not so? But I can't find any trademark S&W that's not Smith and Wesson.

Might try posting the pictures over on Blade Forums.

Never seen a knife on a forum made in Japan before. Nice little folding blade knife.

I would suspect that this is one of the many knives made over seas years ago, by Taylor Cutlery, S&Ws long time licensee for knives. Taylor would make many many knives of all different designs and submit them to S&W to select some for the S&W accessory catalog and the old S&W stores. The knives not selected by S&W would be dumped on the 2ndary knife markets & wind up on Ebay & at gun shows. S&W did make their own knives early in their knife production period, 50+ yrs ago but then went to outside providers. Ed.

Could be just the blade is Japanese. Japan is known for some very fine steel, but not always the case.
I can't imagine S&W using expensive components in their knives.
