S&W knives
Are they made in that big country across the pond?

I have a CK114 I use as a work knife and it doesn't have any markings at all on where it was made. Not a bad knife, but I've owned better knives too.

I'm fairly certain they aren't made here in the states. Few knives are these days. Even most of the offerings from companies that people think of as "American" are made overseas (Buck, Schrade, Uncle Henry, etc.).

From what I have seen, the domestic made are marked USA while non-domestic are not marked with a point of origin. (Anecdotal not definitive by any means based on my limited selection in the knife drawer.)

General rule of thumb nowadays is if something's not marked Made in USA, or a variation thereof, it's not.

S&W knives have been made by various makers, including the factory, over the last 50 years. Quality ranges from outstanding to less than desirable. Most S&W knives made in the last 20 yrs. , or so, were made by licensee "Taylor Cutlery" as S&WS official knife maker, who outsourced a lot of the production to China. Last year S&W became American Outdoor Brands and acquired Taylor Cutlery as one of it's "Brands." Ed

All the ones I've seen and owned are from China. I see them at Dollar General for $5.00.

Personally, I have yet to see one marked Made in USA. All I have seen were marked Made in China, either on the blade or the box. Made in China knives are not necessarily a deal-killer for me -- I have a few that are pretty decent blades, like a couple of CRKT examples and one Browning -- but the S&W ones have never really impressed me much.

What you are seeing in discount knife outlets are usually "over runs" by Taylor Cutlery, made mostly in China in the last 20 yrs. When Taylor was the licensee, they would supply S&W marketing with dozens of knives and marketing might select 1/2 doz. for inclusion in the S&W factory accessory/knife catalog. The knives not selected by the factory were then dumped on the secondary markets and greatly discounted prices vs. what S&W charged for the knives featured in their catalog. These over run knives all have the S&W name & logo on them, but are not factory authorized issues. About 15 yrs. ago, or so, a fellow S&W collector I know, happened to meet the CEO of Taylor at the Shot Show and he made a deal to receive a shipment of each new issue of S&W knives. Soon UPS trucks were delivering large boxes filled with knives. After several hundred arrived, my friend realized he must be getting all the knives not selected by S&W for their factory authorized knife catalog, and therefore they were not recognized by collectors as real S&W knives! Ed.

All the good ones are, anyway.
You can usually tell which Buck knives are made in China, based upon pricing, when a given model/design is offered in both USA made and China made versions.
That, and the presence or absence of a "Made in USA" stamping or printed info on package or in catalog.
