Default J Frame Target Grips

I am looking into getting a pair of J frame target grips for my model 36, but can't find much info on the grips.

Do they fit round or square butt?
What model came with them from the factory?
etc.

any info would be great.
Thanks

Yes they fit both round and square. Don't know that any model came with them as standard.
They can be had on e-Bay all the time.

LEO918 is correct. If a J frame came from the factory with target stocks it would have been a special order. Back in the day many gun shops/stores that stocked and sold S&W's also carried a variety of factory stocks, triggers and hammers that were for sale. These were in blister packs and displayed in different ways in the store. Occasionally different stocks still in the factory packaging will may their way to either this forum or ebay.

IIRC, even factory J frame targets came in at least two different styles. This may have something to do with time periods they were produced. Also may be to incorrect nomenclature by the sellers. Some I thought were ecstatically pleasing on the small frame revolvers, other I didn't think looked very good. It's one thing if you are searching for stocks that feel good and are comfortable to shoot. It's a different horse if looking for ones that are period correct for the gun. hardcase60

I have a pair of the S&W J-frame target grips; I think they are from the mid-late '70s. Everyone's hand are different, so I speak only from my standpoint. I can't see any advantage over the standard square butt grips. For non-concealment use, they may have a slight advantage over the round butt stocks. Again, my opinion only and not really something worthy of debate.

If concealment is an important factor, the target grips are a poor choice when compared with the standard stocks.

I'm looking at an unopened S&W factory blister pack that says " Smooth Gonzalo Alves Target Stocks J-Frame-Round Butt " for models 30, 34, 36, 37, 38. 40, 60 and 63. Order number 163400000. Back side of the pack lists two other J Frame Target stocks, Order # 16300000 for Walnut checkered, and # 163200000 for Gonzalo Alves checkered. Ed.

The factory target grips shown above fit round AND square butts alike.

There is another configuration, colloquially known as "banana" targets, made to fit round butts ONLY.

These are J frame smooth round-to-square. No idea if they are original as I haven't lettered this one.

Both my Model 34-1 (1972) and my Model 36-1 (1976) came with the grips shown, and both were bought from original owners.

No boxes unfortunately so I can't tell, but neither Seller indicated that the gun came with anything different.

It's possible that target stocks are original to your guns, but not likely.

I have only seen 1 m34 that came in box with target grips and was special order along with trigger & Hammer. I have hoarded a few extras, I have
small hands and J targets make it perfect for me. I don't know how guys with big hands shoot Js. Besides smooth & checkered I think difference in
grips are the models with flat bottom and those than are somewhat rounded off. All the smooths I have seen are flat bottom. All mine are checkered with rounded edges on butt.

Anyone know what kind of wood that these smooth targets are on the top right model 63? I can’t recall ever seeing any like these before, that’s the reason I bought them.

Default 63 Grips

USMC5811,
Any info on the grips in your bottom picture? On the 63 (I think). I have 1 set just like 'em and all they say on the inside is "Made in Italy." They were not expensive when I got them years ago and have been on many J-frames that I own and are by far the most comfortable grips for me to shoot my J's well. I think I got them from CDNN, but they are no longer listed on their website. I'd like to have another pair or two. Just a super fit for my small paws. Any help appreciated.

wds2776, welcome! Those grips were made by Sile.

The two different types of "universal fit" J frame Target stocks were made in two different time frames. The earlier ones had black oxide stock discs and the later ones silver plated ones.

The grips on the 3” 63 are herrets that I bought off of here. I think they were around $40. I had two sets but my father claimed the other set. They are nice but the ones on my shooter 5” 63 are even better for me. I don’t know who made those they came with the 63 with a Philippines sticker on the inside.

My big hands need a large grip but it’s a little to big for my daughters and wife to use really good.
