Default 1973 kit knife ??

I picked one up at the flea market seems to very well made. The smith book says made in 1973. What do you know about them? Value? Where can I get a sheath?

Thanks

Nice fixed blade knife. I don't know anything about the knife.

You acquired a rare knife. If you paid less than $200 for the kit you got a bargain !! Very hard to find. I grabbed 1 about 5 yrs ago already built...no sheath. I don't believe they provided one..but I could be wrong.
I actually worked there in the late 70's.
If you don't own all the Blackie Collins knives from back then...put them on your list.....very high end knives....all come a sheath and they made them right in Springfield at their leather shop. Enjoy !!

Thank-you for posting a 1970s S&W knife that I was unaware of. I hope that is a fish scaler on its spine rather than a cross between a serrated blade and saw. I like the safe place for a finger in front of the lower hand guard.

Smoky Mountain Knife Works sells inexpensive leather sheaths.

However, if you can find some heavy leather sheaths are not hard to make. While it's cheating a little I have cut out the pieces, glued them together, then paid a small shoe repair shop a few bucks to run a stitch around the edge.

These never had a sheath. Smith & Wesson sold these as kits rather then toss them. I've seen some that were made up after with some very interesting handles.

SCSW 4th says:

"To be finished and assembled by owner, serrated spine, never authorized for sale by S&W, $375."

When I worked at S&W I was co-located with the employee store....and one little advantage workers had was than some 2nds were sold in house only.
ALL "seconds" had a number 2 stamped on them.
Every once in a while you see one out there..I have a few...I treat them as rare.

On a different thread it stated Blackie Collins bought 2000 kits from S&W and sold them through a 3rd party. These were not just a bunch of extra pieces thrown together to mix...match...and sell. They sold for around $38 in 1973.

S&W was respected for high end quality work only..... and the reputation of their logo would never have been tarnished by inferior products going out their doors.

If you ever get a chance to hold ANY of the S&W "Collins" knives from that era.....you will want them all. Unfortunately nice ones are getting harder to find...plus commanding higher prices.
PEACE..

Your correct. I just bought some items from a retired S&W employee. He had a set of the 4 engraved Blackie Collins knives in the gang box. There was too much wrong with the set for me to be interested for what he wanted.
