I found this knife for sale in a local antique store but do not know anything about it. Look over the pics and if you can provide any info about it and its value, I would appreciate it. Thanks for looking.

It is a knife that was to be offered in kit form to be assembled and finished by the consumer.
The knife kit was never authorized for sale by S&W.

Value??? Good question.....

Thanks for your help and input. If I understand you correctly this particular knife was produced and sold as a finished knife with subsequent models produced in kit form but never hit the market. This particular knife has the S&W logo impressed in the base of the blade on the right side, which is hard to see in the pic, and the s/n on the left side. Would you think that $115.00 for it is out of line?

Any chance that the box is numbered to the knife? Any papework? Is it stamped, "Made in the USA"? If these are yes'es, I would offer $100 and feel like both parties did OK.

The top of the box is not numbered to the knife and the box bottom is missing. No paperwork and no "made in the USA" stamp.

I'd assume some of the knife kits were assembled and finished at S&W as prototypes, and some of the kits probably did get sold to the public.
The kit knives were made by S&W in Springfield, MA. in the 1970's along with these knives.

The example you are looking at appears to have been put together by someone who knew what they were doing and $100-$115 would be a fair price.

A small point. The folder in your group, which is actually one of the dealer display cases, was not made by S&W. It was farmed out to Alcas as S&W did not have the capability to manufacture folders at the time.

Ah yes, I forgot about that.
From page six of The Knives of Smith & Wesson (C.E. Rinke 1990)
"...contracted with Alcas or Bowen Knife to produce this folding knife according
to Smith and Wesson's specifications."

I plan on returning to the store today to see if I can make a deal on it as well as an older Marble's Trailcraft. Will keep you posted. Thanks to all for their generous time and assistance.

Well gents, I went back to the store early this afternoon and offered $100.00 for the knife and my offer was accepted. Much to my surprise when I gave it a closer look I found that the box lid IS numbered to the knife (don't know how I missed that) and learned that ko41 was dead on when he informed that it was a kit knife from the 70's. I have attached more pics which show the S&W logo and the date of 1973. Also, on the rear blade base it is stamped "S. & W. KIT." I never looked close when I first looked at it and consequently never noticed that. In any event, my sincere thanks and appreciation to ko41 and mod34. I'm well pleased and, oh yeah, I also got the Marble's Trailcraft knife and my wife got an antique kitchen hutch (I knew I shoulda left her home). Now only if someone has a spare S&W knife box bottom.................

And can someone tell me why my pics are coming thru like they are instead of full size. Maybe it's because I'm uploading them from my files instead of a hosting site??????

Cool, that would look good in my collection......I'll give ya $115 for it.

I've never actually seen one of those in person or as in as much detail as in your photos.
Congratulations on a nice knife and thanks for sharing.

Default Smith kit Knife

Thanks guys for tweaking my memory, I bought one of these kits back when they were offered and I think it is completed, haven't paid it much attention since but believe it is still in the safe. Wish I could remember what the kit price was back then since I know that one example has brought at least a "Ben Franklin'. Amazing, just amazing, I'm going to try to remember to find that knife see what it looks like and its number.

Hey Oldtimer,
How about you check for that knife in your safe and keep us posted. We would sure like to see a picture and I for one would like to know what number you have. In the meantime, here's a pic (such as it is) of the Marble's Trailcraft that I picked up with the Smith. Sorry but I'm a lousy photographer.

Here's a set my late fil gave me. Took me a while to track these down, might be worth about $1000. There is also a folding knife that I don't have in the picture.

Your knives are called the Collector Series and they are based on the Blackie Collins designs of the 70's. The artwork was contracted to Carolina Knife Company but I think Dillingham Graphics actually did the blades. Not that many around as the project, which was planned to be 1000 sets, was never completed.

If you have the folder with the graphics, it is one of very few prototypes that were never offered for sale.

Very nice knives and a great addition to the "other than guns stuff" most of us S&W collectors have.

Bob

Default S&W Kit knife

Eminence and anyone interested, I checked out the safe and found the kit knife, looks like yours except the number on mine is 0960, there is a box but found no paperwork to help with original price. I'll have to apologize due to the fact I am unable to do the picture thing, no camera. Sorry! Talking about knives, any of you guys have the reference book for the CASE brand with values of the old STAG handle sheath knives? None of the Case knives have ever been sharpened. I found several of those and a couple Pumas & KA-BARS. If anyone has the book and is willing to share those values with me (depending on whether I am able to describe then properly)I could "E" mail or try to PM, although that doesn't always work for me, so as to not tie up the forum unless others would be interested. PS G. Gator you are in possession of some fine S&W blades, Sir!

Default Knife Values

No one has offered any help as to the values of the old Case & KA-BAR & PUMA knives, does that mean that no one has access to the book? If you can, will you please offer some information. I have these out of the safe and cleaned and waxed and in front of me now but they will have to return to the safe soon. Appreciate any insight.
