Default The Hostile...

Anybody know where I can get one of these?

It doesn't have to be an "original" print. Hell, I would rather it wasn't...I can't afford an original print. But I would like to have a reproduction of this.

Your pics are both reprints. The originals, from 1902 and 1903 respectively, are rarely seen and very pricey. Reprints of both can be had on Fleabay for prices ranging from $25 to $100. They can slip by kinda' under the radar which accounts for the low prices at times(I got a Last Cartridge for $23, including shipping, in 2007). Don't show up often but they are available.

The original "Hostiles" and the 80's reprint have a twig in the left foreground. The shoreline under the horse in the original is straighter than the reprint. There is a 1950's reprint that has the S&W logo instead of the twig and a different shoreline under the horse. It seems there was another reprint with the logo not that long ago but am not sure(CRS ya' know). The original "The Last Cartridge" has a dead cub in the lefty foreground while the reprint does not. Not PC to show killing animals ya' know.

Hopefully this will be helpful in telling you what you are looking at when you do see some. You may be that lucky dude who stumbles on a seller with an original and thinks he has a reprint.

Bob

Thanks for the valuable info Bob.

Like I said, even if the original wasn't as much as it is, a repro would be fine.

When I was in CLEET back in 1990, one of my instructors (God bless you Ken Barnes) had one of these prints on the wall of his office. That's the first time I ever saw one and I've wanted one ever since.

Maybe someday.

Bob:
I have a print (framed) of the Hostiles that was given to be 25 or 30 years ago. It has the twig under the S&W logo and on the very bottom left just above the black frame around the picture it says Printed by S&W. Do you think this could be an original and if so any idea on how much it may be worth. It is in wonderful condition. I also have the Hostiles buckle brand new in the box with the tag.
Thanks, Frank

I don't know where to find the prints, but I found a coffee cup w/ "The Hostiles" printed on it at the S&W store in Pigeon Forge, TN. Too bad the store is no longer there....Perhaps S&W still has some, email them to see!

They used to be quite common on ebay, I haven't been there (ebay) in several months so I don't know it there still showing up as regularly as they used to.
I'd also periodically check the S & W site as I've seen them pop up in the "store".

Frank, it would not be an original. The originals were almost square(14"x15") with no S&W logo. The 1952 reprints do have the logo and are 18"x22". The one from the 80's were a little smaller, about 11"x14". This is the one that could come framed with a buckle and Maverick knife. It seems there was another printing, and that may be what you have, but I just don't remember any details. It's a bitch to get old.
