The 916 was my introduction to the biggest piece of S&W junk I have ever seen.... Issued one brand new when I started in LE and on the range, it would eject live shells through the loading port when it was pumped. Of course sometimes it would load! I recall that we sent many of them back and were issued credit instead of the factory returning the guns. The Remington 870 entered the picture and we were good to go. The S&W models 1000 and 3000 seemed to be fairly good shotguns.

Our PD bought a bunch of the 916 riot guns back in the mid-70s. With in three years they were traded for Remington 870s. The 916s had many broken parts and were not reliable. They were cheaply built. They were not know for their durability and reliability.

The 3000 (made in Japan, by the way) being a pretty close copy of the 870, that would figure.

The U.S. Customs office in San Francisco had purchased a bunch of 916a riot guns before I came into the service. Once I became the lead firearms instructor, I had told the office Chief that they were junk and should be replaced. He said he had never heard of any problems with them.
So on the next quarterly qualification, I set a simple tactical shotgun course, and gave the Chief one of the 916a shotguns. By the fifth round, he had three malfunctions. He immediately told me to go buy some Remington 870 shotguns to replace them.
The last time I saw the 916's, they were being dropped overboard one of the Customs boats a few miles outside the Golden gate. Now Davy Jones has them in his locker.

I have a pretty good collection of riot guns. The 916 is the only one I had problems with. I bought it for $150 at the Tulsa Show and after putting another $75.00 in it it now shoots. It sits next to the stack and is certainly not one of my go to riot guns.

Looks like everyone agrees. The 916 has to be one of the most
poorly made pumps ever produced. I think the 916 came from
the Nobel pump shotgun, which was another low quality design.
