The 916 series of shotguns had its origins in the products of the now long defunct Noble brand and were marketed by S&W during the 1970's. There were supposedly durability issues with these, leading to their being discontinued and replaced by the imported 3000 type by the early 1980's. The 916A was specifically configured for law enforcement and home defense use.
