I love some of Smith's long guns, although I don't have the knowledge of them like I do the revolvers. There are plenty of people on this forum that do, hopefully they'll chime in soon.
I believe that the rifles were made by Howa for Smith and Wesson years ago, there was the 1500 and 1700. I rarely see them in local gun shops but the few that I have owned in the past were very nice rifles.
You have a very nice piece there and also looks like a MAK90 box, another one of favorites. Search this forum and also the book,Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson by Jim Supica and Richard Nahas they have some information on them.

I also recall Husqvarna produced some of the rifles for Smith and Wesson.I don't think the S&W guns get the credit like some of the other more well known long guns that goes for the rifles and the shotguns but being a Smith and Wesson fan I enjoy them all.

I don't think there's any vast consumer demand for these, as such. The price should be about what you'd pay for most other .30-06 rifles in that condition. Remember, it's discontinued, and you can't get parts and many gunsmiths don't know the brand, so service may be iffy.

I'd offer $400 and see what happens. If he wants much more, I'd just save my money and go look for a Winchester M-70 made after they re-introduced the Mauser '98 type extractor. This later Husqvarna action is not a controlled round feed.

The full stock may warrant paying $450. I do like the classic stock, not the Monte Carlo style.

If you buy it, post more and better pics, please. We don't see the S&W rifles here often.

The rifle is the late model Husqvarna imported about 1970 as a S&W.
It features the 800 action and is a totally different design than the
earlier Husqvarna rifles imported for S&W. It is a push feed design and
is no doubt a good action but it is not a controlled feed Mauser type
design. Some users prefer the newer action but most probably do not.
However it is a high quality rifle that was imported as a S&W for only
a short time and has the desirable full stock. In as new condition it
might sell as high as $600 on GB but that is really top dollar. I
wouldn't pay that much for it but it's up to you. Use it for hunting and
put some wear on it and you would be unlikely to ever get your money
back. But that's true of most new hunting rifles. It's your call
depending on how well you like it but there are better buys out there
in 30-06 hunting rifles. If you like it try to buy it for less.

There are places on the net that have parts and if not........
a good Gunsmith will fix you up.

A 30-06 is a winner in any shape or form.
Good luck.

IIRC, didn't Carl Gustaf manufacture rifles that S&W imported for awhile, I think in the '60's or '70's?

In the 80's S&W rifles model number 1500 and 1700 were made by Howa and private labeled with the S&W name. Those rifles were made in Japan and are the same company that makes the Weatherby Vanguard rifles today.

If it was made by Howa, check for a recall on the bolt assembly. I bought one a few years ago that needed the recall work done to make it safe to shoot. I sent the bolt on for the work to be done and it was a no charge fix. I'm not sure where I found that recall notice, but they did it promptly.
Seems that the bolt could blow back when the gun was fired.
I only found out after I'd taken it to the range and fired a box of shells to check it out. They do have a kick to em

Did you have to send the whole rifle, or just the bolt?

I just sent the bolt assembly to them and in a couple of weeks it was back. I didn't notice if they reworked it or replaced any parts, I trusted that they did it right. It is not a gun I really shoot, it's there if I need it.

So I looked it up and realized I have a somewhat faulty memory of the issue, sorry 'bout that. I should have looked it up before posting anything. Not lazy, just tired.
My serial number was in the group, I sent my bolt in and it was fixed.
This is quoted from the S&W website:
i-Bolt Rifle Bolt Safety Recall
i-Bolt Rifle Sear Engagement Pin

IMPORTANT SAFETY RECALL NOTICE - NOVEMBER 26, 2008
PRODUCT:
Bolt from Smith & Wesson's i-Bolt rifle.
DESCRIPTION OF THE HAZARD:
Smith & Wesson has identified a condition that may exist with the bolt supplied with some rifles that would allow the striker to become disengaged from its locking tabs during cycling of the bolt, allowing the rifle to fire without the trigger being pulled. In the interest of consumer safety, we are initiating this recall to allow for the prompt inspection and, if necessary, the repair and replacement of each bolt.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PRODUCT INVOLVED:
This recall applies to the bolts of all i-Bolt rifles manufactured by Smith & Wesson prior to December 1, 2008.
REMEDY/ACTION TO BE TAKEN:
STOP USING YOUR RIFLE.
Any unintended discharge of a firearm has the potential for causing injury, and we ask that you stop using your rifle until we have an opportunity to inspect the bolt to make certain that there is no condition which will allow the striker to disengage.
To facilitate the inspection and repair, if necessary, of your rifle bolt, please contact Smith & Wesson’s customer service department to receive instructions and a call tag for the return of your bolt to Smith & Wesson.
When you return your bolt to Smith & Wesson, be sure to attach the completed information card received from Smith & Wesson, so that your bolt can be inspected and repaired, and returned to you as quickly and efficiently as possible.
VERIFICATION OF CORRECTIVE ACTION:
When your rifle bolt is returned, you should note a punch dot on the handle of the bolt. See the photograph below. This punch dot is confirmation that your bolt has been inspected and is safe to use.
CONSUMER CONTACT:
To receive a FedEx pre-paid billable stamp and shipping instructions to arrange for the inspection and repair, if necessary, of your bolt, contact Smith & Wesson directly at 1-800-331-0852 or email us at [email protected].

The Howa data does not apply to the rifle in the photo. That one was made by Husqvarna/Carl Gustaf, in Sweden.

Both manufacturer and design are different from the Howa-made S&W .
