Tom
I owned one about 20 years ago. Fun little subgun
that never missed a beat. And i bought case lots of
the cheapest FMJ i could find with brass cases.
Fires from an open bolt and cyclic rate was not too
fast where you couldn't have some fun going thru a
30 rd. magazine
Foolishly sold mine for around 3K which was going rate then,,,,

Default Money into Noise

A 76 is just great fun, turns money into noise very efficiently. Mine eats most anything you feed it and is fairly accurate for what it is. Simple construction with readily available parts. The prices continue to climb, most selling now for over 10K. All of them are C&R eligible.

About 5 years ago one sold on Rock Island. It was owned by a long time S&W collector who is no longer active and I have the original box/papers numbered to that one.

Unfortunately Rock Island was unable to put me in touch with the buyer so the box will probably end up going on an auction.

Was this the model sometimes referred to as the "light rifle"?

I never owned one but my former PD had four of them and I got to check them out and shoot them whenever I had ammo. Fun stuff.

They are indeed a fun-to-shoot and very reliable SMG. You cannot shoot a 76 without a smile on your face.

We had some in inventory for years, had a lot of trigger time on them. Utilitarian, functional, and great fun to shoot......reminded me somewhat of the M 3.

I've had this S&W 76 for several years.
I don't shoot it as much as I should, it's a blast!
The police dept that ordered it new in the early 70's had a finish called Armoloy applied to the gun and magazines.

S&W 76 and a Mod 29-2.

Had one for many years. Paid a whopping $1,000 for it when I bought it. Sadly I sold it a few years ago. I'm sure I had a good reason, but that reason escapes me now! I wasn't collecting Smiths at the time, but if I had been, I'm sure I'd still have it. Here's a pic of me shooting it at the Silencer Shoot back in 2007. I sure do miss it now. There's a lot of good stories & memories that go with this one!

That's a Dater designed SG9 suppressed barrel assembly built by Southern Machine Tool & Die. If any of you out there are familiar with the history of the MK760 will know this name. Anyway, with that combination, the gun ran like a sewing machine and sounded like one too!

Here's my other suppressed favorite. This is at the Silencer Shoot a year later. "Verwy verwy quiet, heh heh heh"

Still got this one! I finally learned my lesson!

Find a machinegun dealer near you and go talk to him. He can explain to you just how easy it is, as long as they're legal in your state.

Some guys called 'em "Swedish K"...a bit of history on the original, here--

Carl Gustav m/45 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Not clear if S&W's copies were licensed, or if Sweden ever
protested the Model 76. In 2010 I met a genuine, real-deal
LRRP veteran who carried one in Vietnam, and he loved it--
still raved about it, forty-some years later.

Green Berets and SEALs used the Swedish K a lot back then too. Foreign arms couldn't be attributed to the US.

The Carl Gustav M45 or Swedish K is still in my opinion the best 9mm sub gun ever built.

Hello, I came across your old posting and wondered if you still owned the M76 Box and stuff? I purchased a M76 and would like to round out the ownership with an original box. Send me a text at the number below, thanks.

The S&W Model 76 is very similar to the Carl Gustav M45 (aka: Swedish K), but not identical. My understanding is that US Special Forces liked the Swedish K, but Sweden cut off all sales (in opposition to the Vietnam War) and S&W stepped in to fill the demand. Relatively few were made and the M76 was dropped from the product line by the late 1980's or early 1990's. The S&W 76 was up against the MAC-10 and Uzi products for law enforcement sales, and the H&K MP-5 series took a big piece of military and law enforcement market by that time. The last I saw of the S&W 76 was in the very early 1990's, when S&W's law enforcement catalog offered a "close out sale" at under $600 each delivered to a US law enforcement agency. By that time transfers to individuals had been limited to "pre-ban" guns already in private hands, but the Model 76's then in stock were manufactured prior to the ban, so transfer to individual officers was possible (subject to the usual transfer tax and other requirements). Doesn't sound like a lot of money today, but at that time it was probably more than most officers' house payments! As usual with hindsight, a missed investment opportunity.
