Default Help with a S&W Husqvarna Model E

Hi. I am looking for some help with a S&W rifle I just purchased, such as when it was made, how many were produced, etcetera. Here is what I have. It is a Model E Smith & Wesson made by Husqvarna in .308. The serial number is 359322. On the left side of the barrel is stamped MOD E Sweden. It is also stamped Husqvarna VapenFabriks AB Nitro. On the top of the barrel it is stamped Smith & Wesson .308 WIN. The Smith & Wesson logo is also stamped on the top of the barrel. The person I bought it from told me it was new in the box and had not been fired. That appears to be the case, as the bolt, breech, and barrel are new in appearance with no signs of wear, heat, or gunpowder.

I would appreciate any information on this particular rifle anyone might be able to afford me. If not, is there a reference anyone can direct me to? Again, I apologize for being so forward. It is just that I was so excited to hear of people (visa vie the S&W Forum) who might possibly be able to help me. Thanks. Terry

Welcome to the forum. Everyone asks questions about their new firearms! This is all I can find:

Could you post a couple of good photos?

My copy of Gun Traders Guide says:

Made by Husqvarna, Vapenfabrik A.B., Huskvarna, Sweden from 1969 – 1972.
They came in .22-250, .243 Win., .270 Win., .308 Win., .30-06, 7mm Rem. Mag., .300 Win. Mag.
Checkered walnut stock w/Monte Carlo cheekpiece, rosewood forend tip and pistol-grip cap.
Swivels. 20.25 inch barrel. Full length Mannlicher-style forearm.
Model E: NIB $589, EX $435, GD $306

I’m sure these prices are way out of date

The swede's manufacture the best quality steels in the world. I believe they were the first ones to develope the chrome moly steels. I have a few early 1900 swede 6,5mm mausers and the accuracy is unbelieveable. There later manufactured hunting rifles from the 50's and up are suppose to be a top quality rifle too. I have a 1907 swede carl gustaf m96 mauser in 6,5mm swede with its 29'' barrel at 100yds she can shoot 1 1/2'' groups with no scope using sellier & bellot ammo. I impressed some SWAT guys at the range one day when they said they had a few modern scoped rifles that couldn't shoot that good. My point is if you see the husqvarna, carl gustaf name on the swedish rifles you can bet its a top quality gun. The older swede oberndorf mausers were manufactured and assembled in germany using swedish steel.

Thanks. I've been doing some digging and was told neither S & W nor Husqvarna kept very good records on these guns. I was told I would probably never find out how many were actually made. I don't know if that is true or not. I appreciate the info you posted.

Hello MrFun60
What you have is a S&W Marketed Imported Husqvarna that S&W Offered from 1967-1973 time span. There were Two actions used on these gun's that were Imported to S&W, the earliest being a Model 1640 action & The Later one being an Improved 1640 action that was known as the Model 1900 action. These actions were in House made by Husqvarna and are a scaled down version of the Mauser 98 actions & They are called a small ring action. Later on around 1970 time span the Engineer's at Husqvarna got together and designed a refined version of the 1640 style and that later version is called the model 1900 action. Both actions were used in Gun's Marketed by S&W but the earlier Model 1640 actions are more abundant as stiffer import law's forced S&W to market the model 1500 Japanese rifles made by Howa of Japan, thus cutting their Import ties & Business dealing's with Husqvarna.

I have had several Howa rifles in the past and although they are very eye appealing, their quality of steel or close detail's of the machine work can not compare to that of the hand made High quality Husqvarna's. Early On, I located a Model-E Mannlicher style rifle like you have shown here but the one I found was of 30-06 caliber. I bought it off Gunbroker.com as an Unfired example but during it's shipment to my FFL, Through UPS The gun sadly Got Destroyed. I was sick to my stomach when my FFL Guy opened the box it was packaged in as the gun was Now just Junk due to Poor Packaging on the selle'sr part. The only thing I think that could have happened to this rifle was that some Idiot had to run over it with a Fork Lift somewhere along it's shipping route to my FFL. The seller did not have ample Insurance on it to cover what I had Paid him for the rifle, so it was his Loss as I I did get a refund but sadly I wanted the gun more so than I did the seller's refund.

I did find another Husqvarna rifle a week Later, sdaly not an E-model, but this one was the A-model. The A-Model's have the high gloss Urethane finish on their European walnut and rosewood embellishment's on the fore grip with hand checkering as well as a Monte-Carlo style stock and a roll over cheek piece. This one is chambered in 30-06 and is wearing a period correct Redfield Wide field 3-9 scope. Below is a link to a web site that will enhance your Knowledge of Husqvarna's. It shows the civilian rifles exported to S&W as well as a serial number bank where you can date your gun. They also tell in detail of how the 1970 Model 1900 action's came to be and the changes they made to their previous model 1640 actions to enhance them. I have not seen any factual information of just how Many of these gun's were produced for S&W but I suspect not many as they do not show up often out there for sale. I do know that Husqvarna also imported their gun's to Canada as well as an Import company called "Trade-Wind's" in Tacoma Washington in the late 1960s-Early 1970s time span shown in the Original Brochure offering below. Below is the Husqvarna Model-E rifle that I bought that was destroyed in shipment as well as the Model-A that I later purchased to replace the runined one. I hope this helps, These Husky's really shot well. Hammerdown

The Destroyed Husqvarna S&W Model-E that I returned to the seller. The guy had shipped this prize gun in a Air gun box I can't believe anyone would do that with such a rare prize, but it would not have mattered what box it was in by the looks of the Brute force that damaged this rifle, nothing would have kept it safe during shipment.

Here is the second Husqvarna rifle that I located. This is an A-Model chambered in 30-06 as well with it's period correct Redfield 3-9 Power Wide field scope on it

Hello MRFun60
Off the subject of your S&W Imported Husky rifle, but certainly in line with the time back then, it was Not Uncommon to see High end European rifles offered by United States Gun Manufacturer's back then. Of those were Colt, S&W, Marlin, Ithaca and H&R to name but a few. I have alway's had a fondness for the High quaility European made rifles owning several Sako's, Ithaca's which were made by Tika of Finland and a couple of Colt's imported guns. About Twenty Five years ago I came across a Very Odd European rifle made by H&R. Now when most of us think of H&R we get a mental picture of their Moderate priced medium quality hand guns, But that is not the case of these H&R rifles that they offered. Back then I was just married about a Year and with a child on the way, so I had to Pass on that Odd Looking, Yet Elegant looking H&R rifle.

It took me a Quarter of a Century to locate another example of these H&R rifles and as luck would have it I found it ina Local gun shop in my area. The owner of the Gun Shop had No Earthly Idea what he really had as he handed it to me he said that he had it for about Three months with no Player's on it. That comment certainly opened the door for some serious Haggling as I told him let's face it h&R is Not well known for high quality firearms of which he agreed. It was priced at $650.00 and was wearing a period correct Leupold 3-9 scope that I could tell as early as it's scope cap read Patent Pend. I briskly brought his price down to $500.00 Out the door with one box of Winchester .308 Hunting ammo included in the sale and was Very glad to have found it.

I Headed off to the range with it and was shocked at it's Tight groups of one ragged hole. What really surprised me was the gun's trigger as it was scary light with Zero creep unlike my Husky S&W that was somewhat crisp with a very slight creep. Once I arrived home with it, I took it out to my shop and Pulled the stock off of it. That was when I realized why it's trigger was so sweet as it was stamped Made in Finland by Sako. It was fully adjutsable for Creep and full and my Trigger Gauge showed me that it had a One Pund trigger Pull with Zero creep. I Liked it, so I left it alone and put the stock back on it.

A Few weeks Later while speaking about it on another gun forum a member of that forum PM'd me. he said that he was a former employee of H&R and worked for them in their sales department. He shared a welth of Knowledge about these guns with me as the action's were imported and made by FN In Bellgium. The trigger assemblies were made by Sako, and the Barrel's were made her in the states by Douglas Barrels. he explained that these barrels were of the highest quality as they are air gap Barrels of Match quality yet made light in the sporter Pencil style profile. The stock's were supplied by Fagen and they are called "The Aristocrat" style with the Monte-Carlo style and wild roll over cheek piece, embellished with Rosewood on the fore grip and Pistol grip areas and the checkering was done in house at H&R by Two older woman that worked for the company.

He mentioned that H&R Offered these guns from 1965-1968 time span with only a couple a Thousand of them ever being made. I Knew they had to be Rare as I had only seen one other in the past 25 Years, so I sure was glad to have come across this one.

I have Learned to Love the Buttery smooth FN action in this rifle and it is the only gun I have that None other in my safe can compare to as far as Supreme accuracy goes, this gun is a Pure Tack driver leaving behind one Ragged hole on Target no matter what you shoot through it. Here is my 1967 H&R Ultra-Rifle....

Thanks. Wow, I was sick when I saw the photos of that broken Husqvarna. I cannot even imagine how you felt. I am always scared to death when waiting on a shipped gun. I have heard horror stories, but I have never seen anything like that. On a brighter note, that model A is a beautiful piece. That is my next "holy grail". I'd love to add an A model to the collection. Also, thanks for the info on the H&R.

I was in a friends small local shop the other day when a gentleman walks in with one of these and was looking for a tap screw for the receiver. It was in 30-06 and had a beautiful Mannlicher stock. What I really liked was the S&W logo on top of the receiver ring. This was the first one of these rifles I've ever seen and I asked the owner if he'd like to sell it. He said he'd never part with it and I don't blame him.

Default Tap screw guy

What a small world. If you are referring to Tom's Gun Shop in Galesburg, Illinois, that was me (Terry). It was a pleasure meeting you and talking to you. You are a class guy, and I enjoyed talking with you and Tom. Yes, she is a beauty. Thanks.

That Mannlicher stock is a gorgeous addition to the gun.
I'd love to take one out.
As for the snapped Husky stock, Hammerdown ,I would have been livid.
At least you were able to come across another good rifle.
