Default S&W 1500 howa 222 rem. heavy barrel

Got a little excited about a rifle in a pawn shop today- Smith an Wesson Model 1500 (Howa made) heavy barrel rifle in 222 Remington. Slick as a minnow! Heavy, nice blue, nice bottom metal, all steel inside the mag well, chunky yet tasteful walnut stock, 5 bills OTD. I bet it's a tack driver. Haven't decided...

Opinions!

I'd buy it. What nicer rifle can you find for 5 bills? They want that for a paint-finished one with a plastic stock.

I have a 1500 in .30-06. Not my most accurate rifle, but I have had it since 1982 and it has taken a lot of game. Oh yeah, .222 is one of my favorite calibers to reload.

There was a recall on those guns concerning the bolt. It was possible to reassemble it in such a way that the safety did not work. Research it.

That's exactly the rifle my "dog" shootin' buddy uses. In fact both of us use the "triple deuce" (my rifle's a Remington) for doggin'. Good luck

I'd be all over it. Howa is still in business and their actions are the basis for a lot of the rifles the long range steel guys built.

Nice score, as for the bolt recall, I have a S&W 1500 and about 10 years ago I contacted S&W they would not deal with it but I contacted HOWA and they promptly sent me a post paid envelope and I sent the bolt to them and it was returned repaired in a few weeks. The 1500-1700 series rifles are nice guns.

I have that exact one and it the most accurate rifle I have ever owned. Absolute quality. Buy it while you can. Almost missed mine 25 years ago, but a friend talked the dealer into holding it for me. Two other folks tried to get it before I got to the shop the same day!

Found a couple of pictures of mine.

That's the same gun! I can imagine 222 through that heavy barrel would be a tack driver. Add to the mix it looks lightly/almost unused. I'm am going to go back, check the serial number for the recall, regroup if it's a match, if not, probably buy that puppy. I just got a sako full stock (with the square bolt back) in 222, so now I have the "reloading excuse" for gun purchase, maybe some of you know the one.2 222s just makes a lot of sense, in a lot of ways. And "one more tack driver" is always a good policy. I'll post pics.
