Default Model 1500

I have the same rifle, I got it used also as a gift from my step father I seem to remember that these where made in the late 70's. FYI there is a safety recall on these apparently if you disassemble the bolt and put it together wrong the rifle will fire when you close the bolt. I think Howa still will fix this if you send them the bolt, take a look at Howa's website and see if they are still doing this. I did this with mine about 4 years ago and there was no charge.

They are nice rifles, mine is very accurate they have the same action as a Weatherby Vangard, as for value I have not seen on sell recently but I would think the rifle should go around 400.00 you might check on Gunbrokers.com.

Have fun

Troy

I bought my son a S&W 1500 in 270 Win in the 1980's and he hunted it hard when he lived in Colorado and it's very accurate and well made.

I bought a S&W 1500 in 222 Remington in 1983 for $315 out the door. After 8 years of shooting prairie dogs in Norris, SD, the bullets key-holed at 25 yards. Hollow point nose and flat base profile hole in the paper. Real tight 10 inch group at 25 yards with awesome knockdown power.

A gunshop in Plano, Texas bought all the old S&W parts. They installed a new .223 Rem SS heavy barrel, a new bolt, and opened up the barrel channel. If I select cases with a common head stamp, 1/2" groups at a 100 yards are easy. Mixed brass ammo out of the can will get 3/4 to 1" groups.

I ruined the original trigger trying to adjust it. I sent the rifle to Timney Trigger and got the first S&W 1500 trigger installed for $65 IIRC. They are great rifles.

I bought a S&W model 1500 in 1982 in a 300 win mag, put a 3/9 Redfield scope on it and use it for Elk hunting in several western states. Great rifle, have maintained it only, no adjustments.

Like I said above I bought my son one and they came with a Howa barreled action the same one used today in the Weatherby lower tier rifles. The Weatherby has a higher luster blue and a shroud over the back of the bolt. Both rifles have an excellent reputation for accuracy.

Here it is, 5-15-15, I recently bought a very slightly used S&W 1500 with a Leupold VXIII (like new) for $375!!! I did see the recall and checked on it, and yes they still are doing the repair at no charge.

For 375k with a good scope you got a really good deal (assuming it shoots well) let us know how it shoots.

They typically go for between $300 and $550 depending on the caliber, the condition and if it comes with optics.

I love the S&W rifles with the Schnabel fore end or for that matter and rifle with a Schnabel fore end.

They are good rifles, I don't know why they don't have a higher resale value. Like others have said; the S&W 1500, Mossberg 1500 and the Weatherby Vanguard are/were all made with Howa 1500 barreled actions. I have a newer 24" heavy barreled .223 Howa that is capable of consistently shooting 1/2" (and under) groups at 100 yards. I have a friend with an older heavy barreled .22-250 S&W 1500 that I have been trying to buy for years without any luck.
