Default Different stocks for AR-15

The collapsable stocks (M-4 style) are adjustable for length of pull (if you are wearing a flak jacket you would want it shorter), and can be shortened for entry applications. The Magpul PRS is adjustable for length of pull, has an adjustable cheek rest, and a rail for adding a monopod. Others are lighter weight or have storage. There are many different stocks available, with many different characteristics. It's one of the great things about the AR-15 platform, the stock can be tailored to be mission specific.

There are several reasons to change stock. A couple were mentioned above. Most factory collapsing stocks on the AR series have a couple short comings in my opinion.

1. The height of the stock at the heel is too short. Being a straight line stock, if you set the toe of the stock in the normal pocket area of the shoulder, most people then have to drop their head down behind the sights. The stock needs to be higher on the pocket. With the original Colt sliding stock this was really bad. Magpul's CTR and the LMT SOPMOD stock have a longer heel.

2. The newer designed stocks, mentioned in number one, have a much better cheek weld. Hard to explain but the feel much better when they come up to the cheek.

3. OEM stocks are loose and sometimes rattle on the tube. This part never really bothered me but it does some people. The newer aftermarket stocks fit tighter on the tube.

A little off topic, but the tube on the S&W M&P 15-22 is hollow (no buffer or spring inside) and can be used for storage. It even has a rubber cap to keep things from coming out. Remove the OE stock from the 15-22 and you will see it.

As for changing stocks, it is often just personal. Like chrome wheels on your ride.

I like the Magpul CTR for the AR, and have one on my 15-22. The CTR is about twice the price of the near identical Magpul MOE, but the MOE lacks the lock-down mechanism which keeps it from rattling on the tube as many ARs do. That being said, the factory M&P stock is pretty tight.

FYI, the 15-22 has a mil-spec sized tube, not the commercial size. They are near identical, but the mil-spec is just slightly smaller in diameter than the commerical size.

Speaking of the tube storage area... I only discovered it when I removed the S&W stock... wondered.... what is this little tab here... Oh... how cool... a storage area. The S&W manual is incredibly lacking for information about this rifle.

I didn't like the hollow sound i could hear with my jaw on the stock while i shot so i filled my 15-22 tube with polystyrene packing peanuts just to deaden the sound. works a treat!

I switched to a Magpul MOE because it's shaped better and stays in place on my shoulder better.

I just like the appearance of the Magpul MOE better than the original, so I changed it out at the store before I brought it home. Now I have a box of parts that I have replaced with Magpul hardware.

I like the stock stock just fine, I fixed the looseness with a little strip of velcro tape that I heard about here, now I have got to try this, that sound bothers me too. wonder what else would work don't have any packing peanuts.
I have added to mine but the only thing I changed was the iron sights for flip ups, not magpul but some I found for 1/4 the cost that work just as well.

I stuff my "buffer tube" with ammo for A.) Extra ammo, I think I was able to get 40 some rounds in there and B.) Add weight to feel a lil more like my M&P 15 sport.

Adjustable stocks are illegal in Massachusetts. I wish I could change the stock on my 15-22! I changed the one of my Stag to a solid "Vietnam" style stock because to me it looks right and is the only stock to have. It was good enough for us in Nam it is good enough for me now.
Has anyone ever changed out the "spider" stock on the 15-22 to a solid stock? As I said in Mass you cannot adjust it, it has to be pinned.

I changed out my original for a CRANE style stock for the improved cheek weld. It just feels better.

I like the CTR and I own an MOE, which gets used once in a while, but I like the CRANE. The original stock is too minimalist for me.

My preferred stock is a Magpul UBR, but there is no easy way of attaching it to the 15-22.
