Default Got my repaired M&P 15-22 back from S&W

Some of you may recall reading about the extractor issue I had with my 15-22 in another post on this forum. At the range after several FTFeed and FTE I noticed that my extractor was no longer on the bolt. Gone again, as this extractor was replaced about two weeks earlier at the retailer, Gander Mountain for the same problem. At that time GM took the parts out of a new gun in inventory to fix mine.

Instead of going back to GM I called S&W and got a return shipping label emailed to me. Sent it out on a Monday, and exactly two weeks later got it back.

Yesterday (Wednesday) was the first day I could go to the range and shoot it. I did absolutely nothing to the gun after getting it back from S&W as far as cleaning or anything else. I proceeded to run 300 rounds of Federal Bulk Pack (Wally World) ammo using 11 different magazines thru the rifle. (One can not have too many magazines )

Not one issue. No FTF, FTE or problems of any kind.

This gun is a hoot to shoot when it functions as intended. I do find that if I take my time loading the magazines and tap the end of the mag I am loading on the range bench, my knee, or palm of my hand to ensure the ammo is loaded correctly, that feeding problems are much less likely to occur.

Thanks S&W for the timely turnaround on the fix. And the two free magazines that you sent back with the rifle are much appreciated.

One other note, S&W made no mention of the threaded barrel and flash suppressor that was on my rifle. I really did not expect the mod to be an issue, as that in no way made the extractor fail. Had the end of the barrel blown off, I would not have expected S&W to fix it under warranty.

Thats great to hear, took about a month to get mine back, but mine was one of the firsts to get sent back, and the Engineers had to look it over. So because of me, ya'll get your guns back in a couple of weeks, instead of a month, hehehe. Seems like everybody is getting 2 extra mags also, and that is awesome. I only got 1, but thats ok. better than nothing. I use the Federal bulk from walmart too, all have been flawless. The 15-22 is my favorite gun, and a blast to shoot. So cngrads on getting yours back and Most of all...ENJOY AND HAPPY SHOOTING!!!

I read yesterday on another internet forum regarding "S&W share price and company performance" that this new M&P15-22 is a top priority for the company and wants to keep this rifle as "super hot" at retail.

This is a big category for them as buyers of this .22 rifle will probably lead to new purchases of their heavy hitting M&P15's in the future. Glad to hear they are sending out "thank you" mags...super move!

What did they say they did to fix it?

Just had a short note returned with the rifle saying "upgraded to current specs"

They had to have replaced the extractor, as the OE one was gone. I don't know if they did anything to the feed ramp, or the ejector, as they are two other areas of known issues.

On the paperwork i got back with mine, they actually said what they replaced, but since then seems they just say 'upgraded to latest specs'.

Well I just wish somebody could tell me if mine is "upgraded to current specs". I got it from Academy recently and was fresh stock so hopefully it's latest/greatest, but you would think with this many send backs there would be a way by S/N maybe to determine if yours is one of the problem ones.

If you shoot it and it breaks, it most likely is a problem one.

It would be nice to know if there is S/N info.

I have an "early" one with over 1000 flawless rounds through it, after I adjusted the ejector. Knock on wood/fingers crossed......

Just put another 125 rounds thru 5 different magazines through my 15-22 at the range Wednesday. All rounds went through flawlessly.

Default Got a bad one!

Bought my M&P 15-22 last Saturday (24 Oct ) and finally got to shoot it this morning. Had several FTF and FTE. Switched to different ammo. After about 10 rounds heard a loud bang with a bright flash and a burst of air pressure to the side of the face.

Looked at the bolt and it was about 1/4 in. open, pulled the handle back and part of the extracter fell out. The casing is still in the chamber and the bottom of the shell is partially ripped off.

Called S&W and they said they will send send the shipping label. Well, thought I would share that info on the 15-22.

Wow.............I just dont know what to say. S&W had better get their act together! I love mine, but now I will aways be worrying if the feedramp will break off/the extractor break off/ or failure to eject?(which I now how to fix).
I wonder if a recall is coming??

That senario is exactly what happened to me when I lost the extractor the first time. Lot of FTF and FTEs then an Out Of Battery boom. Extractor missing and a torn up cartridge casing. At least you should get an extra free magazine or two for your troubles.

Do you recall what brand of ammo you were using when you had your extractor fall out?

Glock, I wonder if the problem starts with the ejector. Maybe it is just a hair off and gets worse as more cartridges are fired. Then as the cartridges get worse and worse in getting ejected, a non properly ejected cartridge gets stuck in the bolt area, gets slammed into a cartridge that is fed into the gun and causes an out of battery discharge. The out of battery discharge then blows off the extractor or the feed ramp. Just a rambling thought.

It was Winchester super X. Before that I was using Remington.

Went to the range again yesterday (Sunday). Fired 250 rounds of Federal bulk. Shot at the 100 yard target. Very pleased with the accuracy, especially with Federal bulk.

Had 2 Failure to Feed out of 250 rounds. I believe both were magazine related.

yeah, couldnt agree more, ive had got about 500rds give or take since getting mine back, a stovepipe here and there ,less than 10. Im sure its in the way i loaded the paticular round. but i still have to cross my fingers when shooting it. Especially like when somebody else wants to try it out, and it does it to them, sure dont make ya feel to good about it.

Howdy all just thought I would let you know of my experience with my 15-22 which I picked up this past Saturday morning and took to the range this afternoon I put about 35 rounds of Rem GB through it with about 3 ftf than a whoosh and bang and my extractor was gone with the exception of the spring and a small piece of the extractor which I found on the floor of the range the case was still in the chamber but had blown off half the rim. Needless to say I call Smith and they were going to send me a shipping label but I said I would take it back to Gander as they are closer than Fed-EX for me. The guy I spoke to at Smith said they have had issues with the extractors and it would take about 2 to 3 weeks to get back to me. Kind of a shame as I had gotten it zeroed with the first 2 mags I put through it and now its gone I hope this fix whatever they do will take care of the problem as it was a very sweet shooting little weapon and I was looking forward to customizing it and had already ordered several things for it. Will let you know how it goes and as I'm seeing on this forum I'm not alone with this problem.

Remmington GB sucks. Always hated Rem GB. Terrible function, terrible accuracy... worst ammo ever... don't even like the smell of it. It should all be disposed of. The brass and lead should not be recycled due to defective molecular structure. Burry it deep in Yucca Mountain.

Just thought I'd give NtoBroken's blood pressure a Sunday morning bump.

Just got back from my initial outing with my 15-22 and was sadly disappointed that it wouldn't go more than three shots with any type of ammo before a casing would get stuck as the bolt was closing on a chambered round. I cleaned it again and tried ten different types of ammo from subsonic mach stuff through all the high velocity 36 and 40 grain loads I had laying around. Nothing would feed and I end up with a pile of flatened cases that kept getting caught and crushed by the bolt (always with a round chambered). Then I tried Federal Auto Match and it ran great for about three mags, then BOOM! Out of battery discharge. Same as above with bottom of shell blowing open with a spring and half inch stick of metal landing on the bench. Extractor and ejector look fine so I don't know where they came from but I'm putting the parts, the exploded shell and a handful of flattened cased in a ziplock with the gun when it goes back to the factory. I'm bummed but if it needed the upgrade I'd rather find out on the first trip to the range then at a match.

The only good news is that I was completely blown away by the accuracy...dime to quarter size groups with everything at 25 yards with a Holosight just leaning over the bench using only elbows for support. When it comes back I'm from the factory (if they fix the problem) I'm slapping a scope on it to see what she can really do. I really love this rifle, and I hope it can come back to the factory in perfect shape. I'll be calling Smith first thing Monday!

Another 15-22 about to take a FedEx ride. Maybe we should all buy FedEx stock.

Yes they are fun to shoot and accurate.

How did you guys pack yours. Did you just put the shipping label on the original box? I think I have a larger box I can fit the original into so the exterior box doesn't say "hey this is a gun."

I'll remove my flip sights and optic, but I also changed the stock and grip, should I bother changing them back? Will the factory care warranty-wise?

The instructions I got from S&W to ship mine was to use a plain box on the outside. And ship without a magazine. So that is what I did. I returned my 15-22 to OE appearance before shipping. I did leave the flash hider that I had installed by a gunsmith on the gun. No problems with the mod from S&W.

Is there anyway you can take a pic and post it of the current position of your ejector? I have looked at mine since the S&W repair, and it is slightly in a different position than before sending to S&W.

Talking MY M&P 15-22 BROKE

i have had the same problem as you all and took my gun back to the shop i baught it from and they shiped it back for me. it has been a month since i have seen it.. makes me upset.. and i was also using remington bras plated hollow point ammo in it. i had ran like 600 rounds through it using winchester ammo, and it was fine. then i used remington, and herd a loud Bang. the bullet never got spit out. and the back of the bullet was split in half. and the extractor was broke.. it was a sweet shooting lill gun. i hop i get some extra clips out of the deal.. specially since its been a month..well i hope im shooting soon.. just figure i would let u all no. and im glad im not the only one..

Score another for the Remington Golden Bullets.

Sounds like another Out Of Battery incident. When this happens the cartridge exploding outside of the barrel takes out the extractor. I do wish S&W would sell replacement parts for this rifle so they could be repaired at the range or locally. Most other .22 mfgs. sell replacement parts that can be on hand for situations such as an OOB. OOBs are not unusual with .22 semi autos. Can happen in larger calibers also.

A month is way too long for repairs, unless you are on the West Coast (two weeks for back & forth shipping). Call S&W customer service and they will look up the repair for you.

I was surprised to see the manual doesn't even have a parts breakdown diagram!

Beck and all having had their rifles returned from S&W.

Were you originally having the round stand straight up and stuck in the magazine (and bent)? If so, does that still happen infrequently, or has that been 100% remedied? Are you using the original mag?

Yes, I have had that issue. Before and after the return. Happened maybe two or three times in the 700 or so rounds I have shot since the repair. (My repair was for extractor issues)

I have several magazines, and it has not been isolated (yet) to one or certain magazines. (When I have an issue like this, I put a piece of masking tape on the bottom of the magazine, to see if other issues occur with the marked mag.) I pass it off as a possible loader error when the magazine was loaded. It could also be a slightly out of spec cartridge, maybe one that had it loaded properly from the magazine not have chambered all the way and an OOB might occur. Just some rambling thoughts.

Bottom line, I am not dwelling on this.....yet.

Thanks. I went through a Fed Value Pack yesterday and had about the same number. Like you, I'm not handwringing over it, but wondering if S&W was providing new mags that eliminated it. If so, I thought I might let my rifle take a trip north. But if my rifle is functioning about the same as others after inspection, then I figured I'd wait for the 'big bang'...

Yeah, it was jamming on me when i first got it, with bullets standing straight up, bending several bullets. After i got it back, its done it less than 10 times out of 500 or so rounds ive shot, but i blame that on how i loaded the mag.

Thanks for the update. There's gotta be something wrong with the mag lips (too tight or a forming seam snag) not allowing the bullet to lift high enough into the proper position to feed. With rounds in the mag, you can pull down on the thumb assist then let back up and see that the top round often does not fully lift into position. It's Dremmel time!

Glad you got your gun back and it is shooting well for you. And two free magazines is good too.

I tend to agree, anytime there is another layer (retailer, or whatever) there is always a possibility of them taking their time to return it to the manufacturer.

I haven't tried any Blazer .22s in mine yet. One of these days I'll have to see how that round shoots in my 15-22.

I sent my weapon back on Nov 4 and I got it back last night the 12th. Man that was fast and also with two new mags.
What ticks me off is the Fed Ex guy. He left the rifle in front of the door without ringing the door bell. It stated on the front of the package it was to be signed for by an adult.
I'm glad no one took it. Something told me to check the front door about eight thirty last night. I have a security camera at the front door and when I flipped it on ,there was the package.
The rifle is dirty but hopefully it doesn't jam up now.

Congratulations Cptslick.

That was pretty quick alright.

That Fed-X driver really screwed up. What if some extra stupid kid took that rifle and hurt themselves or someone else? You should tell Fed-X before something like that happens.

Surely Fed-X has already told their drivers not to do that.

I am not saying I want to get anybody in trouble. I don't, in such a case, see how to avoid that though.
