Default M&P 15-22 Extractor Gone

Took my new M&P 15-22 to the range Friday for the first time. First magazine had 25 CCI Blazers go down range with no problems. Second mag had 25 CCI MiniMag HP rounds again no problems. Third mag had 25 Winchester SuperX HP rounds. During that third mag I had several failure to feed and failure to ejects. I noticed the ejected cartrige was always about halfway out the ejector port.

Switched back to the CCI Blazers and a differnt mag and still had FTE's but only 2 or three per mag.

Ended up putting about 400 rounds total through the gun. I was dissapointed with the FTE's every mag. After getting home and looking over the gun I noticed the exractor is totally gone. Not sure when it came off but it's definitly gone! Anybody else notice the manual doesn't have a parts breakdown of the gun?

Called S&W CS and waiting for shipping lable to return gun. They told me they didn't want me to send the mags, just the gun.

Very happy with the groupings at 50 yards.

Hopefully they get these issues resolved!

Sorry to hear it, but not the first time its happened, they get you fixed up pretty quickly, and even give you a couple new mags. I had to send mine in 4 days after i got it, for the same issues. Over close to 500rds or so now, been problem free. Good Luck.

another thing to remember also, you have to be real paticular how you load the mags or you'll have issues.

well, like the manual says, load 1 at a time, pull the buttons on the side, just enough down to load 1 in at a time, and while you do this make sure to that the backend of the bullet is all the way back touching the mag, and make sure to tap the mag on your palm or leg, bench whatever, to better seat the bullets, im still no expert on it. But that should help you.

Yeah they are fun, for sure. Mine has been great except for 3-4 FTF's out of nearly 500 rnds. One thing I will NEVER do is run any Remington through it. These guns do not like it. A neighbor of mine bought his from Academy just a few days after I did (same store) and it gave him fits, was shooting Rem bulk pack.

Wink finding lost gun parts

I recently took my neighbor out shooting, he had a p38 that belonged to his wife's dad. He shot 49 of fifty and noticed the front sight was gone. We couldn't look fore the sight when the range was still open. After the range closed for the day we went back with two speaker magnets taped to a swiffer picker upper,we found the sight in about five minutes. If the part isn't stainless you might at least find the part.

You are only a couple of shipping days away from S&W. You should have your rifle back before turkey day. And you can say your 15-22 got to take a ride on the FedEx truck.

Good news! Fedex just brought my repaired 15-22 to the door! I wasn't expecting it back so soon but it is!

There was a single sheet of paper in the box that stated:

Repaired: UPDATED TO LATEST SPEC.

Also there were two magazines included. (I had sent it off with none).

It's pretty dirty, I can tell it has been fired alot. Both magazines are dirty too. I had sent the gun back clean.

They turned it around very quickly! They received the gun on 10 Nov and it's back here on 13 Nov! It took longer to get the shipping label here.

I'll report back as soon as I get a chance to get to the range!

Default Range Report after Repair

Got a chance today to check out my 15-22 at the indoor range. I shot 350 rounds of CCI Blazer's with fantastic results! I didn't have a chance to clean the gun before going to the range so it was as is from Smith & Wesson after repair. It was dirty!

Shot 10 full magazines without any failures at all. Perfect! The 11th Mag had one FTFeed, than one more FTFeed on the 12th Mag. Ran out of time.

All in all it was great! I'm a happy camper. I just hope it holds up for the long haul! Time for a good cleaning!

Here is a picture which shows the accuracy! Not bad!

Great news! Wow, 350 rounds, no problem and dirty at that. The 15-22 is one heck of a rifle.

So happy for you.

Cool M&P 15-22 Extractor Failure

I ran a box (535 rounds) of Remmingtons thru it last week when I bought it new at a Gun show from a registered distributor. No problems. Accurate using only guns mounted sites.

This week I shot the same ammo, about 25-30 rounds and then the extractor was failing. I was lucky enough to be watching my friend shoot the next round after clearing the JAm. I saw the extractor come flying out along with the shell???? I was able to find the parts on the ground(range shooting). I will be calling S&W on Monday.

Stay Tuned to see how the manufacturer responds to this NEW Model.

Welcome to the forum. And the broken extractor club. Your 15-22 is about to take a ride on the FedEx truck.

Having been there I would suggest you ask for the return shipping label be emailed to you to speed up the process. Don't include the magazine with the rifle when returning it. S&W should return the repaired rifle updated to current specs with two new magazines.

Many owners, including myself, have had issues with Remington ammo. Better success is usually achieved with using Federal Bulk from WalMart.

I'm curious how the extractor is held on the bolt? It appears it is somehow just pressed into the bolt slot and held by friction? Thats just a guess. This is the first gun I've ever owned that the manual didn't have a parts breakdown.

Just got back from range and searched Google after having problems with the extractor. I stumbled upon this thread and thought I'd chime in...

I shot about 100 winchesters without a problem and switched to some remington yellow jackets. These are terrible in my gun.. Constant FTF/FTE problems. On one of them, I noticed the case stuck in the bore, took everything apart, got it out, put it back together to fire, and then noticed the same thing. Upon inspection, the extractor was gone.

I found a spring, the extractor, and a separate post-like piece around the table and floor. I'm not sure if it was done correctly, but I managed to put it all back together and shoot while at the range. Seems the narrow portion of the post-like piece sits in the spring which then slides into a hole spring first in the bolt. This assembly pushes forward on the extractor piece which is positioned by a notch on the bolt. One can see this notch by just looking at the underside. Pushing out from the notch (small tool required) while pushing in the same direction on the exposed portion of the extractor should remove it from bolt. This will probably launch the post-like piece out of the bolt. It's a miracle I found it.

I switched back to the winchesters which had been flawless and started to get FTF/FTE. I went through three mags before leaving where the first two were in same mag and the last was a different one. The first two had several FTF/FTE problems and the last fired without fail. One mag isn't enough to say that was the cause, so I'll go to the range one more time before deciding whether or not I should contact SW for repair.

You were most fortunate to find your extractor, once it made its launch from the bolt.

I actually lost two extractors, before sending it back to S&W for a fix.

With the FTF/FTE problems you are having, make sure your EJECTOR is not a problem.

The honeymoon is over!

Lost the extractor out of the bolt yesterday afternoon. Only found the spring.

Guess I should email S&W about replacement parts. Bummer, the rifle shoots extremely well!

Did your rifle have major cycling problems out of the box, or did it cycle with few failures?

I wanted replacement parts when my 15-22 lost the extractor. S&W would not sell me any. Wanted the rifle back because it was so new to market to make sure it was "right" when repaired. At least they give extra mags for the problem.

The carbine had minimal problems. In one exercise it fired 100 rounds in a little over a minute with no bobbles.

How does this ship back to S&W, do they send a box or just a call tag?

They will snail mail you a Fedex ground shipping lable unless you ask them to email you one which is much faster! They don't provide a box. I sent mine back in original box.

I was hoping to hear that you had chronic cycling problems leading up to the failure. Absent magazine issues, my rifle has also cycled well. I had hoped that indiacted that my rifle might be more likely to hold together than so many of the others. Guess not.

S&W will tell you when they send you the call tag to put the rifle in a plain box. And don't include the magazine. Make sure the rifle is unloaded. You can usually get a plain box from your local gun shop.

Thanks, they're emailing the call tag. I'll scour the basement for a box.

Sorry to report the rifle was nearly flawless before the extractor went AWOL.

One afternoon. 400ish rounds.

The next weekend the extractor spontaneously ejected about the end of the first magazine or start of the second.

Default 8 years later same problem

Notice this post is from 2009. It's now 2017 and I just had the same. I went to shoot my new 15-22 for the first time at a steel math Saturday. All was going well until around round 160-170 when I started to have failure to extract problems. Well that ended my day. When I got back home on Sunday, I took a look at the rifle and the extractor was missing along with the spring and whatever else goes with it. Need to contact S&W Monday. You would hope after 8 years they would have fix the problem. My disappointed. At least my SW22 Victory is running like a champ.

I still have the original S&W 15-22 extractor and extractor spring in my 10 month old rifle but have a spare Exact Edge extractor made by VOLQUARTSEN and a spare spring purchased on ebay just in case so I wouldn't need to ship it back for an extraction issue.

Contact S&W today about the missing extractor. It looks like they are shipping the parts now. They are sending me all the missing parts but are out of stock on the springs. They say 5-7 business days for the spring to ship. We will see what happens when the new parts are installed. I'll run a box of 325 automatch. Hopefully all will go well.

I've had mine for almost 2 years now and have put around 3000'ish rounds down range with no issues. Not until recently that is. Not sure exactly what happened but it does sound like an OOB round. I was sighting in after scope change and on about the 5th shot there was a loud pop next to my cheek and tip of finger. My son who was behind me said he saw something fly out to the right into the marsh. Upon looking at the chamber I noticed the bolt was back slightly and there was black around it. I then tried to clear it and it wouldn't extract the casing. That's when I noticed the missing extractor and plunger as well as the mangled casing. Now the shot just prior to the failure was one of those shots that just barely had enough oomff behind it to get it out of the end of the barrel and rolls about 20 feet and stops in front of you. I've had a LOT of those using the Armscor .22 LR ammo. Not sure if it just didn't have enough to open and load a round securely or what. Now I was target shooting so it was like 1 shot every 3-5 seconds not quick fire. Here's a few pics of what I saw. I already received the new parts and the plunger everyone seemed to like looks nothing like the original piece.

Lesson to be learned here, cheap ammo is not always a bargain! My M&P15 has over 10,000 rounds through it without a single failure that was the guns fault. I got a few light strikes after changing the trigger to a cheap unit. False economy there too!
Point being, I have always used premium ammo. Federal Automatch, CCI SV, or Eley CMP Special.
