Default New MP15-22 - Feeding/Extraction Issues?

Hi all,

New to the forum, but not new to S&W firearms. Have a few .38 revolvers and a 4506 and they've all been great to me.

I picked up a new MP15-22 last Friday from Academy since I've been in the market for a .22. Took it out yesterday to the range and had mixed results. My serial number is: DTExxx. Is this a newer model or one form the initial run?

I had some issues with it, but I think there may be TWO separate problems here and wanted input from y'all that have experience with this rifle.

1) Had some issues with FTF where the round didn't chamber and the case was bent/dented. After reading here, I believe this issue is probably me not carefully loading the magazine and the rounds probably got crushed because they weren't angled up high enough to properly chamber.

2) Had a few issue with FTF where the round attempting to get chambered kind of flipped and the rim got stuck in the magazine lips. I'm thinking this may be due more to the 'extraction' issue than me improperly loading the mags.

What do you folks think? I'm guessing #1 will be resolved by careful loading of the mags, but #2 is more likely caused by the extractor not working properly?

I currently only have the one magazine that came with the rifle, but I ordered four more from S&W. Not sure whether to try to take it to the range again now or wait until I get the new mags to try them all out at once.

I really like this rifle and hate to have to send it back already if it's just me not loading the mags correctly. Not sure if both of my problems above could be caused by improper laoding of the magazines or if it's more likely the extractor/ejector causing the second problem.

If it's the ejector causing one of them, I'm not sure whether to try to adjust it myself or send it back to S&W. I'm a left handed shooter and if this thing fires OOB, it's going to blow right in my face. I really want to like this rifle and it was fun to shoot when it functioned fine, but I'm kind of leary about it right now.

I was shooting all CCI Mini Mags. Had the rounds get stuck in the feed lips of the mag three times in 200 rounds and I'm guessing about 5 bents ones. I've seen people here with much worse results, but I still think a $500 rifle should function better than that. Plus I'm very pleased with my other S&W firearms and didn't expect these kind of issues with their reputation.

Should I try to polish the feed ramp and adjust the ejector or should I take it to Academy and have them send it back?

Thanks for any advice. Until I get my supressor, I can't really shoot in my back yard, so it's kind of a pain having to tweak things and make a range visit each time to test.

Regards

I just checked my ejector and it looks like it's angled in towards the bore like the thread here describing the fix. So I don't know if I want to mess with the ejector any.

Could both of my problems be caused by improper loading of the mags? I have to be honest, I 'overlooked' that part of the manual and while I wasn't trying to load a bunch of rounds at once, I could have been more careful in loading the mags.

Maybe I should just polish the feed ramp a bit with some Flitz and the dremel and see how it goes next time? Doesn't seem like there are any burrs on the feed ramp, but it's not 'baby bottom' smooth and shiny like most of my other firearms. The rifle is just a fun plinker for me, but I would like to have it be reliable. Trying to shoot something a little less expensive than .223 these days.

Oh BTW, I did try one magazine of Remignton 'Sure-Shot' and it was a total flop. First magainze of CCI went without a hiccup, but the Rem was worthless. I could tell the first round or two seemed much weaker than the CCI, then the next four or five didn't ignite even though they had a good primer strike. I unloaded the mag and went back to the CCIs. I'll give the Rem to a buddy of mine and see if it works in his 10-22.

So people sound like they are also getting good results with the Federal bulk from Wally World too. I bought one box of it, so after I'm getting more reliable results from the CCI, I'll give the Federal a try.

Smile Send it in...

Same thing was happening to me.
But I did have an OOB and I am a lefty also.
Not a good thing, it went off in my face.
No injury but it was a shock to my face....
YOU HAVE TO LOAD THE MAGS PROPERLY.
Go slow and put them in one at a time. Pull down on the slider just enough to load one round.
My came back Friday and I went to the range on Saturday.
Had one FTL and it was do to the mag.
I seen it and just wanted to see what would happen.
The rounds have to alternate or it will be trouble.
My gun shoots great now, good luck...

So do you think I should send it in, or try it again. Sounds like you were telling me it may be the magazine loading issues, but then your post title says 'Send it in'.

Sorry about your OOB. I'm trying to avoid the same thing, which is why I'm kind of nervous about shooting it again. If I'm comfortable it's a mag loading issue, I could try it again. Did your rifle get damaged when this occured? Just wondering if that's why you sent it back, or if there was a feeding issue they had to correct for you.

I could polish the feed ramp a bit too. I was careful loading the last two mags and those 50 went without a hitch. Maybe it was just me?

From my experience, properly loading the magazine is the key. If not, that will lead to other problems.

I believe "most" of the 15-22 have a good aligned ejector from the factory. But once you had a round stuck in the magazine, the round might has hit the ejector and made it to misalign. Then you would have some other issues to follow.

So load the magazine carefully, it might take a little long a first but it will get quicker eventually.

Also, check your magazines. Make sure it works, I have 5 mags. 4 of them work perfectly, the other one always get a round stuck in mag and FTF and I don't use them any more.

Hope this help.

My 2 cents.

Default Your call

My OOB blew out the extractor and spring.
I was very careful loading the mags but I was using Rem. bullets and my 15-22 did not like them at all.
It would not shoot more than a couple of rounds before it had some kind of problem.
I also run some CCI and federal, same problems just not as often.
After its return all I ran was CCI and Federal bulk.
It runs great.

Ok, thanks. So far I only have the original mag, but I ordered four more of them from S&W on Friday. I guess I'll wait until the others arrive before heading back to the range with it. I'll just load em all up here (carefully) at the house and number them so I can tell them apart. It could be my magazine contributing to the problem as well as well since I currently only have the one. I'll see how it goes with the new magazines before I do anything else.

Thanks

I would just make sure you are:
1 - using quality ammo. (sounds like you have that covered)
2 - ensure the magazine is loaded properly.
3 - Clean and lube the gun.

Then take it out, and have fun. If you are still having FTF's then call S&W and explain the problem.

I had to send my 15-22 back for a missing extractor after first session at range (400 rounds). My serial number was a DTE3###. They turned it around in less than a week. Since getting it back it has worked great! I've put just over 1000 rounds through it after repair.

My first 100 rounds were good with no isues then started having FTF's a few per mag then FTE's a few per mag, then it got worse and noticed the extractor was gone.

****, that's not what I wanted to hear. Mine is also a DTE3###, so ours were probably made around the same time. I had a similar situation, but my extractor and ejector are still in one piece and don't look damaged (yet).

My first magazine of CCIs went great. Next mag, after a few failures with the Rems I unloaded it and went back to the CCI. A few magazines went fine and then it started happening. I only had 200 rounds of Mini Mags with me, so I stopped for the day. I wonder if it will continue to get worse or if it will get better if I'm more careful loading the mags.

Two weeks from now, I'll be leaving town for about 10 days, so I guess I'll have to wait until after I get back if I need to return it anyways. I have a feeling I'm going to be waiting a while for my extra mags too, but hopefully S&W will surprise me and I'll get a chance to try it with some new mags soon.

Thanks for the info.

S&W were very quick turning it around once they received it. The longest part was waiting a week for their shipping label to come via snail mail, then a three day fedex ground trip to them. They turned it around in three days and overnighted back to me. I didn't even get a call from Fedex, they just showed up at the door!

it was worth getting two extra mags and a "updated specs" rifle.

Since getting it back I've stuck to CCI Blazers and CCI Mini Mags with no issues.

Good luck with yours!

Thanks. Hopefully things will go well. I'm just hoping I get the extra mags soon so I can try it again.

If I have to return mine, I'll probably just take it back to Academy and let them deal with it. In that case, I can drop it off before I leave town and just pick it up from them when I get back. I don't trust the wife to wait at home for one of my packages if she knows it's a gun.

I may go again this weekend with my existing magazine, just load it very carefully and see how it goes. I broke it down and cleaned it real well before and after it's trip to the range. The only other thing I can think to do is polish the feeding ramp a bit, but not sure if that will help or not.

Take care

Can't hurt to polish the feed ramp. Also take a look at the ejector. Moving it a bit toward center may help.

Yeah, I'm still really excited by it, was just a little bummed it didn't go better the first trip. Have been looking at .22s for a few weeks since I don't own one yet and was looking for something I could shoot a lot of inexpensively. Was really considering a 10/22 and I fell in love with the MP15-22 when I saw it. I recently got a CX4 in 9mm, but even 9mm is getting expensive to shoot in volume. I figured it was time to get back into .22.

I'm sure if it doesn't get any better for me that S&W will make it right though. Just a little bummed that I may have to send a new rifle off to have it taken care of. And since I'm left handed, I don't want to have an OOB experience like a few others have.

My S&W 4506 on the other hand is just an ammo disposal unit. When I first started hand loading, I started with 45ACP and a bunch of my initial rounds were out of spec until I got it right. They wouldn't feed in my 1911 or anything else, but my trusty 4506 devoured them like nothing.

I know S&W will make good on it if it does have problems. And if I have to ship it off, sending it while I'm out of town will keep me from missing it.

Does anyone know the turnaround time on ordering magazines lately? I ordered four on Friday evening and I never even got an automated email confirmation. Is this normal for S&W? I kind of figured I would at least get an email confirmation, but maybe they just ship?

Mags ship real quick from S&W IF they have them in stock. My first order resulted in a post card from S&W saying backorder But they came available shortly and were shipped immediately.

I wonder whe mine was built (the one waiting for Christmas)? The Serial is DTE3***.

My mags from S&W took a little less than 2 weeks.

I bought one, too and couple of weeks ago. We took it out and put 200 rounds through it. Yes...we had 4 that flipped and bent. Each one jammed about midway in the magazine. Had to work it out. I thought it was due to loading the magazine. After, carefully loading the mag, the problem disappeared. But, after reading your posts, maybe we'll look into it more critically. I intially thought it to be a mag problem, too. I have 4 more mags on order; however, they are backordered. Oh we were using the Remington Yellow Jackets. Other than this, it is a really fun gun to shoot.

I've had this happen also. Will happen in different magazines. I think the cartridge case is a little out of spec, but that is just a theory. When it happens, I need to get the pliars out to remove the cartridge from the magazine.

So get it fixed by S&W or sell it. I had a Colt M4 OPS that I didn't like and sold it.

And I have read about the GSGs. You got a good one. Others have not been so fortunate.

Yeah, I had a really had a hard time removing them too. I didn't have any tools with me at the range, so I took it up to the rangemaster and he removed them for me the times it happened.

It it safe to pull them out with pliers? I was kind of worried I might set them off. I was trying to work the bullet out so I could dump the powder before trying to work them out.

I didn't think to try it at the time, but maybe it would have worked to disassemble the mag and push it out the bottom? I'll have to try that if it happens again.

That bums me out about the magazines being backordered. I was really hoping to have some additional mags soon. Maybe S&W will surprise us and they be back in stock shortly.

Go to 44mag. They have the 15-22 magazines in stock cheaper than S&W. Google them.

I actually use the pliers to slide the cartridge from the magazine. Priming material is in the bottom, not the sides I am gripping with the pliers. But be sure to wear shooting glasses if or when doing this.

Just checked, but I guess I'm a little too late. On backorder there too. Guess I'll just wait on S&W. I'll probably order a few of the 10 rounders once they are available too. Maybe they will be more forgiving than the 25's.

Gotcha, I was still a little nervous about doing this, but I guess if I'm careful sliding it out with pliers it's probably not a big deal. I'll bring some needle nose pliers with me next time in case I need them. I don't wear shooting glasses at the range since I wear prescription glasses, I'll just be careful trying to remove them.

I couldn't believe how tight those darn things were wedged in there though. I couldn't have gotten them out without tools, but maybe removing the bottom of the magazine and emptying them out will help.

Thanks. I just ordered two from them as well. We'll see which ones arrive first. Can never have too many magazines, right?

Yes, never too many mags. Did you get the 15% off?

Yep, thanks for the heads up on the coupon code. Shipping was kind of pricey there, but not a whole lot of choices right now. I think $13.99 shipping for two magazines was a little ridiculous, but I paid it since there was the 15% off. I figure they only ended up costing around $2 more than S&W with the coupon code.

I may take the rifle out Sat or Sun with the existing mag and give it another try. Usually I can go across the street and plink at the neighbor's (he's got 150 acres), but I avoid it during deer season. Once I assure there isn't an issue with mine (or get it fixed), I'm planning on getting a can so I can just shoot in my yard. Much better than having to go to the range.

Woo hoo. Just got a shipment notice from Botech Tactical about the two mags I ordered from them today. Coming UPS ground from CA to GA so I don't expect them too soon with the holiday, but at least I have a few more on the way to me.

I'm still not sure if I've got problems with the rifle or mags or if I was just careless loading them, but I'm really excited because I love the rifle. I should have a good opportunity to run it with the new mags before I leave town for two weeks, so if it's still got problems, I'll drop it off at Academy to be shipped back before I leave town. I'm sure S&W will take good care of me and get it fixed up and since I won't be here to shoot it anyway, I won't miss it too badly. I'm guessing it will probably be waiting for me at Academy when I get back into town if I have to return it.

Take care

score69 ... You described exactly the same 2 issues I've been having with my rifle. Just got it earlier this month. I've had it out twice now. After the first time I read about the magazine loading thing. So next time out I was really careful to make sure the rounds stacked properly in the mag. I have three magazines and had the same issues with each using quality ammo (mostly). I shot 3 mags each of CCI minimag, Win super X, and the Federal Bulk ammo. Continued to get random FTE's and stovepipes without a big difference between magazines. Got a total of 12 failures out of the 225 rounds (4 Federal, 5 Win, 3 CCI)...not so good. I called S&W and they are sending me a return postage slip. Oh well, after reading other stories here I'm confident that S&W will fix it.

I wouldn't be surprised if the issues many are having with this rifle are due to the use of Rem Golden Bullet. This stuff is pure junk. I used it the first time out and you should see some of the spent casings...bulged at the bottom so it looks like a double rim. I think most of my problems the first time out were with this ammo.

Thanks for the info. While you didn't make me feel any better about my rifle, it's good to know. I have no regrets about buying the rifle though. If they have to take a trip back to the factory, I'm sure S&W will take good care of us.

Yes, it should have been correct from the factory and yes it's an inconveinence, but they will take care of the problem for us. It's going to be a really fun gun and I look forward to owning it.

Default FTF 15-22

Been out three times with my new 15-22, and have had my share of FTF issues. I've got 8 magazines for this rifle and 7 seem to do pretty well when using CCI 36gr hollow points. The 40gr round nose don't feed as well. Remington Golden Bullets are being saved for my Diamondback and my wife's Buck Mark, where they won't cause any problems. Yesterday, I shot 200 rds of CCI 36gr. Loading the mags with 20 rds each, I had 10 FTFs, where the ammo was pinched. I lock back the bolt, drop the mag, remove the offending bullet and put the mag back in and continue. Sometimes I get to fire an entire mag with no FTF issues - about 30% of the time. So, we started looking more closely at magazine loading techniques, and I believe this can help reduce this problem. My little carbine has about 450-500 rounds through it now. I believe it will do better as more ammo is run through it. BUT - I'm wondering if these S&W mags can be improved to reduce this problem. Seems that if the bullet is slightly nose up as the bolt comes forward that things are a lot better. I'm loading ammo one at a time, paying attention to the "cross-stacking" of the bullets, and cycling the loading assist to make sure that all rounds are positioned well (I only loading 20 rounds). I love this gun, it's accurate and an absolute joy to shoot! Thanks to all of you here on the forum for your contributions on this subject!
Bill

Ya gotta load one cartridge at a time into the magazine, pulling the follower down just far enough to get it in and push to the back wall. Sloppy loading has caused a few stoppages for me.

Look at the cartridges thru the window. Should look like scales. If the pattern isn't consistent there's usually a loading problem -- and a stoppage.

Or so I've found via my vast experience of a single, 500 round day with the rifle.

Default Bent Shell Casings

I put 450 rounds out of my 15-22 today. I had 3 rounds that got bent. They were sticking straight up and stuck TIGHT in the front part of the mag.. They were very hard to get out of the mag. I try to be very careful loading mags. 3 bad rounds out of 450 is not bad out of any 22, IMO....
I was shooting CCI, Elliay and Fed bulk from WW.

Mine has already been back to SW for a OOB blast the blew out the ejector. I'd say it is a keeper for me now.

300 rounds of Federal and Winchester Super X. Had multiple FTE. Trying to decide if I should run it and live with it or send it back.

FTE, please check this out. http://smith-wessonforum.com/smith-w...hread-fte.html

or, just send it back to S&W. They will fix it for you at no charge.

I don't have much experience with mine yet, but several people at the local club have these. It seems if the mags aren't broken in, you have more problems with them. I shot mine in a match, and only had 1 mag, so I borrowed another. The gun ran fine with my mag, but I had problems with the borrowed mag. I broke my mag in by taking it apart, spraying it with silicone, and loading it full, then let it set for a couple of days. The borrowed mag had never been shot. Give that a try and let us know if the guys at the club are right.

I have yet to clean my mag, but that is next on the list. I want to see if it corrects the FTF problems with a good cleaning.
