Default Just picked up a M&P 15-22 (problems and fixes)

New to the forum. I am an active participant over at TFL forums and stumbled across a few threads here.

I picked up a M&P 15-22 2 days ago at Cabela's. I decided on it over the SR-22 and the Colt. I brought it home and cleaned and oiled it. Went to the range yesterday and loaded 10 rounds of CCI in the magazine. All 10 fired without a hitch. Loaded 10 more and had a FTE every other round. From there on out it was constant FTE with a few FTF's mixed in. I tried CCI's, Winchester, Federal, American Eagle ammo to name a few all of which had issues.

I was frustrated and ready to make a trip back to Cabela's. This is unacceptable for a $500 gun. I came home and read a few threads on it. I tweaked my extractor inward just a hair, probably 1/16 of an inch. I then cleaned the gun again and went back out this morning to try it again. I put about 150 rounds through the gun with all the mentioned ammo. Not one single FTE. I did have 2 FTF's however. I am contributing the FTF's to the magazine. I do not believe it is the gun at this point.

I am now happy with the gun. I hope the problem stays corrected. I did a youtube video of the gun today after I had fixed it if you want to view.

Excellent Video! Thanks for the post. If mine does the same thing on Christmas AM I'll try moving the extractor.

Very nice video but I need to clarify one item. What you adjusted was the "ejector" not the "extractor". The extractor is located on the bolt. I beleive you ment to say the ejector was adjusted in-ward.

It's really easy to get the two terms mixed up. On my 15-22 the extractor actually came off / departed the bolt. I'd make sure your extractor is still there. I was actually able to adjust the ejector enough that the gun worked 75% of the time even without the extractor. I eventually ended up sending the gun back to S&W for repair.

Hopefully yours is good to go. Best of luck!

You are correct. I meant to say I adjusted the ejector. The extractor is still on the bolt.

n3cal.....Was the extractor something you could have replaced yourself or does it require a gun smith?

I'm not really sure if I could have replaced the extractor myself or not? It appears it is pressed into the bolt somehow with a spring behind it. My guess is yes. It somehow got knocked out during a FTF? This is the first gun I have owned that the manual didn't have a parts breakdown? Oddly enough my gun worked fairly well with it missing.

When my extractor went missing I called Smith & Wesson and they wanted the gun returned. Seems like it would have been easier and cheaper to just replace the bolt. Maybe they adjusted the ejector also?

The paperwork I got back from them after the repair only said the gun was updated to latest specs? Very vague.

I bought mine at Cabela's a couple of weeks ago and I have the exact same problem. I might have to bending the extractor a little.

I made a video on how to fix the ejector. Here is the link if you want to see it.

Thanks for making this video. I hope you can take some constructive criticism though. Now please don't be offended.

The lighting, made it very hard to see, the most important parts. The ejector bar, when not hidden by shadow, was made nearly invisible by glare from your light source.

It is a great effort, and I thank you for making it. I wish you would make another one that is easier to see.

I'm a new member here too. Wanted to say thanks for the video and information. I'll be getting my 15-22 on Christmas so not sure how soon the weather will allow for a shoot. I WILL have my needlenose pliers with me!

Thanks again for the info!

utah, when it failed to eject was there a dent in the side of the round? Mine appeared to be caught between the chamber and the bolt and when i got the round out it had a big dent in the side. My .22 is on the way to smith. Just trying to narrow this down. Was using cci standard velocity

Default another jacked up 1522

OK so I took my new one out today for its maiden voyage and to my surprise it would not shoot more than one round without an FTE. I tried CCI minimags and Federals and neither made a difference. So I took it back to Cabelas without a smile on my face and they are sending it in. Now that I have found this forum it appears this is a common problem. I really hope they fix it (and a couple of mags would be nice too!). It is a really cool little rifle. I am rabbit hunting with a buddy from work tomorrow, he too just bought a new 1522 (so far unfired), I will report back on its performance. At least I still have my old faithfull 10/22!

Sorry to hear you had issues first time out! Welcome to the club! Did you happen to notice if the extractor was still attached to the bolt or was it missing?

Mine has been fine since sending it back to S&W for repair. Have about 1000 rounds through it so far and it's been great.

I got mine to the range for the first time tonight. I didn't have much time so I only ran about 30-40 rounds through it at 50' indoors. Using the existing iron sights and sand bags the first five rounds were 1.5" right and about the same low. After 2 more 5 shot strings and adjustments I was on center but maybe .5" high. Sighting with my bad eye the groups were about 1.5". I loaded up the mag for a 10 round string and it started to chew out one hole in the target.

I took care in loading the mag each time and the 15-22 ran flawlessly for all rounds fired. Being in NJ the mag has been pinned and will only accept 14 rounds ( 15 rounds are legal in NJ ). I have ordered a red dot for it from Primary Arms today and hope to have it by mid-week next week.

I hope to go again tomorrow and give it a more through work out.

I did not notice if the extractor was still there, I took it from the desert straight back to cabelas. My buddy at work bought one and we tested it in the desert Friday. It works pretty well, although one round did go off before the round was fully chambered, causing it to rupture very loudly. I have a photo somewhere. I am going to mount a scope on mine as it has accuracy potential that it is not living up to with the iron sights.

Default M&P 15-22 issues

Three weeks ago went out and bought one for myself and one for my son. His broke after the first 50 round and mine broke after approx 250 rounds. We had lots of FTF it almost became a joke with my son telling me just how many FTF we were having. I tried 5 different 22lr brands to see if that was an issue and let me tell you the CCi Stingers were just as bad as the cheep Bobcats. But I will say when it worked it was a blast to shoot and it will be one of my favorite guns. I did notice the problem I had was one that a lot have had. I also have a a Performance Center 357mag model 327. Bought it 1-1/2 years ago, I also had problems with it from the start. Sent it in and it has been flawless since the day I got it back. I did get my guns back today and I have been reading that they send back extra clips with the guns... Well mine did not have any clips with them at all... So I do not know if it is true or false but it sure would have been nice...

I think they are out of mags. I tried to buy some from the online store and got a msg saying they are backordered.

I am new to this forum also. I just got two mags from S&W which I ordered a couple of weeks ago. I had called about them and was told that they were on back order and had been shipped that day. That is why you didn't get them. They have them now. Also, I bought my M&P 15-22 a couple of weeks ago from "Shooters" for $399.00 (plus shipping - total= $424.00). I had the exact same ejector problems. I posted this somewhere else and referred to the video that I saw about the fix. I also want to thank you so very much for making the video because hearing it described is not near as good as actually seeing it. I think that you did a great job and I, along with countless others, I'm sure, am very grateful. I shot five shots, no problem, then, every other shot was a FTE. Once I got out my needle nose pliers and did "the fix", no more FTE. Again, thank you and I hope that you had a very, merry Christmas! Also, we will all have a Happy New Year with our M&P 15-22's, now that we know the fix!

Glad you got your 15-22 straightened out with the ejector fix.

Don't you qualify for the S&W LEO discount?

Thanks for the vid. I just fixed mine a few minutes ago. Fired off a complete mag w/o a hitch. I will get to do some more testing in the near future. I wish they would send me some free mags even though I fixed it myself.
I noticed in the vid that he didn't say something that I noticed. He said to move it inward maybe 1/16". What I did was to not remove the bolt. I just slid it back far enough to clear the ejector and bent it a little at the time and kept sliding the bolt forward to check my clearance. I left just enough room to slide an index card in between the bolt and the ejector. I couldn't believe it when I rapid fired 25 rounds into the dirt.

Default FTF ar15-22

bad luck on the gun I suppose. I took mine out today and used anew box of blazer 525 count and not one fte or ftf. I was impressed. Sorry to hear about your troubles.

i just brought mine to the range today and shot about 150 rounds of winchester xpert hv. i had only 1 FTF, i'm assuming it's the round since there was a good size dent in the rim. however i got a couple of double fires. it was only the first 2 rounds of the mag. has anyone else had this problem. i'm guessing it's the way i loaded the mag. i took care when loading, making sure the nose of the round was up and gave soft tap on side of the mag before loading the rifle.

I bought mine Monday and fired it yesterday, before reading anything here. Out of 150 rounds, I had zero FTE but two FTF.

I'll check the ejector clearance right now (just to make sure it's correct) and will make sure the mag is loaded correctly everytime.

And thanks for the good video!

I field stripped mine last night and the ejector is perfect, from the factory. Bought Monday at the second store I called.

Two rounds in the magazine were not staggered so I pulled them all out and reloaded it with 23 rounds, and made sure they are all staggered correctly.

I also noticed that it was dirty in there and there were some tiny metal filings inside that gave some of the sliding parts a slightly "gritty" feel. It may just be from the 100 or so rounds I have put through it (and I don't have enough experience to say what it is for sure) but I highly recommend a good cleaning/lube before putting a single round down range with a new 15-22.

Mine gets a good service tomorrow.

Hello all - newbie here - have been reading the posts about M&P15-22 ejector problems, etc. I have the same type of issue- thought it was ammo at first- weapon did not like stingers at all - went to 36gr cci mini mags- shot well at first then jamming again, even tried different mags (I bought extra factory mags)- guys at the shop/range where I purchased gave it a go - jammed on them too- Had sent in to Smith and they turned it around in record time - Smith's letter indicated they had "brought the rifle up to current factory specs" with no elaboration- I went back to the range and within 50 rounds - it was as if nothing had ever been done to the weapon- the jams were just as frequent as before and with different mags. I applaud Smith's responsiveness and turnaround time but beginning to suspect this particular weapon is not a keeper.-

Ejector problems are correctable. There's no telling what S&W did or did not do since they never indicate so... In any event, there's a video here showing exactly how to align the ejector.

I had a few FTE problems. I moved the ejector over a hair about 1500 rounds ago. No problems since. I now have over 2000 rounds through it (I’m no longer counting, just hurry up and reload the mags!).

Mine hates CCI. Everything else I have loves CCI but my 15-22for whatever reason simply will not run them. Federal Bulk, Federal Auto Match, Federal Lightning, Federal Champion all cycle with very few problems (less than 10 in the last 1500 rounds).

I have been on this and other forums for a while, and yours is the first I have read that has not been running better after getting it back from S&W.

Some questions. What ammo are you using? Are you loading the magazines per S&W directions? I guess it is possible jamming could have moved your ejector the wrong direction.
Is your extractor still in the bolt?

Well I sure hope that is not the case for my rifle! It is being picked up by Fedex in the morning to get the Extractor fix. Mine doesn't jam, I just don't have an Extractor anymore. Really wish we knew what Smith was doing to fix these problems..

I had double fires as well. I sent it back to smith and they fixed it. I haven't had a problem since.

Question

The gun is great but I have a problem. I don't know a whole lot about guns. I pushed the pin to split it in half and the bolt and charging handle fell out. I put them back in and closed it up with the pin. After that, I pulled the charging handle back and it fell out. I know how to fix it but it will not split open when I pull the pin out. I just want to know what is wrong so I can get out to the range.

I know what Smith does. They bend the ejector in about 1/16 of an inch.

The Charging handle sits on top of the bolt and it draws the bolt back by pulling back on the post at the top of the bolt.

Default new 15-22

just shot my new 15-22 yesterday. Used Winchester (copper plated I think) ammo. Had 2 FTF in the first 25 rounds and that was it. The next bizzillion rounds fired without issue.

For all those that are having issues I suggest you call S&W, send the rifle back for service and make the request for the actual person who services the firearm to give you a call so you can find out what they did and let them know you want to make sure the problem you had is fully understood by the technition.

S&W is a great company and supports the products they sell. Not sure if they'll do it but it will let them know you expect the job to be done right the first time (I've done this with other products and had preety good response).

I bought my new 15-22 today. Opened the box, took it to the range and put 300 rounds through it without any issues. (I just dislike the fact it has a 10 round magazine). Sorry you guys had problems with your 15-22s.

Hello, bought a new 15-22 on 3/12, and it's operation has been flawless. Seems to do fine with even the cheap stuff from Walmart. One question - I'm finding that the stock seems to be kinda loose. It stays put where it's set, but is loose enough to rattle. Anybody out there with an moe model that can verify this experience? I know there are two sizes of buffer tube, and that the faux buffer tube on the 15-22 is mil spec. I'm thinking I may have received the unit with a commercial size butt stock. Just a question. I can call S&W, but thought I'd check here first.

Welcome to the forum. The stock is very loose out of the box...some people were using tape as a shim to tighten them up a bit. IIRC it was a metal-type tape commonly used in HVAC applications. Mine rattled enough to drive me nuts heh

Bought a new old stock 2009 model. The ejector was bent way down. I pulled it back up and it snapped off. Off to the service center for repair.
