Hi guys.. new S&W muzzle break
Hi, ive been lurking for a few days, reading up on different things. Lots of good info here. Its nice to see!
I bought a 15-22 saturday, (got put on a hold due to my security clearance) and will be taking delivery Thursday or sooner. I cant wait!!
I see that they (S&W) will be releasing a/some muzzle break options around the new year. My question is, does anyone have a line of what they will look like, or what style? Do we know yet what the means of attachment will be? Im assuming it will be via set-screw, but im not sure.
Thanks,
Dean

Congrats on getting the 15-22. I would expect a different threaded barrel for the flash suppressor, but that is just my thoughts.
Would have thought a security clearance would help on the NICS check

lol, yeah.. you'd think it would help, but EVERYTIME.. i get put on hold. I live in NH, and have a waiver on file for handguns, but since the rifles are federal and not state checked, they dont acknowledge the waiver.
thatll teach me to serve uncle sam with a TS clearance...

Yep, any kind of security clearance will result in a delay 9 times out 10. Congrats on the 15-22!!

Actually, a security clearance has exactly the opposite effect. It's guaranteed to hold you up every time.

I sincerely hope it's not a set screw. And for the life of me, I can't imagine why they would do that Considering they could have the bbl manufacturer just thread the bbl, and smith could spin on a standard A2 flash hider that they use on their standard M&P15's. But then again, I can't understand why they didn't bother with this in the first place.

lol, yeah. I agree. it seems like it would have been a good idea from the get-go. oh well i guess.
when I had posted that, I was thinking along the lines of them offering something to add onto existing bbls. i guess Ill end up either threading mine, or swapping out to a new barrel (assuming thats the road they take) whichever is cheaper.
As much as Id love to deck the thing out, I have a hard time putting so much money into a plinker.

The lack of a threaded barrel from the factory has to do with the "compliant" states IMO. Some of these states will not allow a threaded barrel or a flach hider. NJ is one of these states. I assume S&W wanted to streamline the production process and used a barrel that was legal in all 50 states.
Whether S&W will eventually produce a threaded barrel version or offer a threaded barrel as an accessory is still an unanswered question. Some have called S&W and received cryptic answers as to whether or not they will be offered.

But the only problem there is that the rifle is still not compliant in those states in it's current form. And when the compliant ones do come out, they have to be built a little different anyway. Honestly, I think S&W just thought "it's only a .22 lr, it doesn't need one".

It's really not so hard. Simply click the 'Buy It Now Button'
I know what you mean. I just spent $60 for some plastic clips and rail covers. Geeeeesh.... about 10 cents worth of material...

I just talked to S&W today. They are going to be offering threaded barrels maybe around April 2010. They are not offering the barrel shroud, and might not. Thompson did not know anything about the barrel shrouds. Check out eBay, there is always different stuff there. Maybe there is a web site for the MP15-22, don't know yet.
