Default Aftermarket pistol grips on the M&P15-22?

I hear that some aftermarket grips do not line up flush with the receiver. Does anyone have pictures of their grips on their M&P15-22? (Regardless of whether or not it sits flush, I just want some up close pics)

I want to put some sort of FDE (Flat Dark Earth) colored grips on my M&P15-22.

I have seen closeup photos of the Houge rubber overmolded grip and it looked to match up perfectly. These are the plan for mine.

The Magpul Miad i've got, had the modify, The stock grip is flush on the top and the Miad has some voids on top which will allow the the take down pin's spring and inner pin to slide down. and the take down pin will come all the way out.

I just took a q-tip and cut it to fit and taped it in (wii try to get pics up ASAP)

I purchased the Magpul MIAD Pistol Grip Kit which allows you to custom build a grip. Several sizes you can mix and match.

MagPul Industries MIAD Modular Pistol Grip Full Kit AR-15 Synthetic Black - MidwayUSA

The ones with the curved area behind the grip leave about a 1/4" gap, it's not flush to the frame and does not look good. I used the next smaller size and fits perfect.

Magpul makes a "gapper" that is intended to fill that gap (same problem exists on the AR-10), and as I understand it, it also fills the void in the grip that is causing the problem with the takedown detent spring.

Have you personally used the gapper?

Maxicooper, what model Hogue do you have on your M&P 15-22? I can't seem to find the same ones anywhere.

I have a Hogue on my 9mm Sigma handgun but it simply slips over the existing grip.

Can I ask one more question? I see a lot of people including yourself replacing the standard stock with an aftermarket (like your MagPul). What is the advantage? Is it really worth the money to remove the OEM piece and replace it with something so similar? Just curious. Thanks again!

I can't speak for Maxicooper but I replaced my stock with the Magpul for two reasons....one, I like the look better and two, wanted to go with the Flat Dark Earth color (tan) for the contrast with the all black gun. I also added Magpul rail covers in the same color. All of that was mostly just because I like the way it looks better! The rail covers do feel a lot better and are easier to grip comfortably imo.

I plan on getting this same Hogue grip for mine...looks nice. Thanks for posting the pics and link Maxi.

Here is a link to a pic of mine. I have the cheaper Magpul stock than the one Maxicooper has on his rifle but I like it ok.

Thanks for the input. I can certainly see paying for the change if you preferred the color contrast. I was wondering the advantage when you don't change the color. Seems like something of an even swap to me. Now if the Magpul was longer or something, I could see it. If it was needed to damp the recoil better (obviously not on our .22's) or something, that would make sense too.

Why do people change wheels on their vehicles? Most of the time there is no performance benefit, and in some cases it can be detrimental. Honestly, a lot of it is just simple aesthetics.

However, there is some function that goes with the added form of aftermarket stocks and grips. Most of the aftermarket stocks are superior to the factory stock. They are rock solid when locked. Sure it may be overkill for something that will never see war, but it's nice to have that peace of mind. As with grips, they offer more ergonomic and comfort options that isn't really found with the stock grip.

Personally I can't stand the standard collapsible stock. Don't like all the wobble. In the case of the Magpul CTR, it has a friction lock that locks up the stock solid to the receiver extension, yet is still quick to adjust LOP. It really is one of the best lightweight carbine stocks out there. There are lots of other nice carbine stocks available, but my personal opinion is CTR is the best lightweight stock.

As far as grips go, I don't care for the standard grip simply because of my big meat hooks. The distance between the back of the grip and the trigger places the trigger right behind the joint of my trigger finger, not the joint by the tip, but the joint by the knuckle. So the best option for me is the magpul MIAD with the large backstrap which increases the distance between the backstrap and the trigger.

I agree. I have driven 4X4 pickups all my life. (Dedicated Tundra owner since 2000) Anyway.... I shake my head when I see a perfectly good pickup truck lowered and with 45 series low profile tires. So.... I understand when folks talk about outfitting the 15-22 with 'junk'. But..... I just can't help myself

I certainly understand the need or desire to change the grip as that is something you are holding onto and you want it to feel good in your hand. Same would go for the trigger. I guess since I've never compared the OEM stock to one with a Magpul, I don't know what I'm missing. Ignorance is bliss? Or at least cheaper.

or on the flipside when they spend a load on lift kits and 44's lights etc... and it never sees a mud pit or even a dirt road

Thanks. Any closeup pics? I'm curious to see how bad the gap is. It doesn't look too bad in that picture.

The Miad has 3 sizes on the back strap s,m,l i have big hands so the large works for me, the gap is noticable on the large but the medium fits tighter i'll try to get a close up for you.

There is no gap with the small strap. However, there is still the problem of the takedown pin detent spring. It's pretty easy to fix by filling in the space with a little five minute epoxy.

Yeah, just use a long shaft screwdriver or allen wrench. Becareful not to lose the two little springs that will come loose with the grip.

Can't go wrong with either a Magpul Miad or Hogue, the Miad gives you 3 different sizes in 1 package
