The Best Red Dot Sight For M&P15-22
Anyone know what the best red dot sight for the M&P15-22 for under $100 is? I tried doing a search but couldn't see a clear consensus.

do all of those co-witness with the stock sites? I have never used one of these. Are there benefits to any one over the others?

Concensus...? LOL!! No... but there is a myriad of choices for cheap Chinese made red dots under $100 (under $50 really).
For co-witness, a 3/4 inch riser will be required for red dots that don't come with a tall mount. Those that come with tall mounts are typically designed to co-witness with ARs which will work for your rifle. There are also a lot of magnified red dots to chose from but they won't co-witness.
The 'clones' are typically a bit more expensive for Tacticool requirements rather than performance.
Tube size and dot size are the two basic choices to make. Most of the cheap Chinese stuff has 5MOA dots. Though, NcStar has a large selection of smaller 3MOA red dot sights. Barska probably has the widest range of cheap scopes to chose from. There's a ton of choices from a great number of label names but I think they come from the same Chinese labor camps. Find one you like the looks of or is in the right price range for you and it'll work just fine.

I purchased a Primary Arms M3 and so far I love it. I paid $10 extra for the cantilever mount. This mount will allow the red dot to co-witness with the stock sights. It also sets the red dot forward enough to add a 3-5X magnifier.
I think I have about $120 in it including shipping. They are worth a look.

the only issue you could have with a cheap reflex type sight is not seeing the dot clearly in bright light. if you shoot outdoors that can be an issue. the tube type red dot optics don't have that problem. just an fyi.

I have the BSA version, "same sight I think" on mine. Had my reservations about such a cheap sight but so far so good. It co-witness's just fine out of the box and works well. Mikehoncho has it right, outdoor's it's not as bright as I would like but useable. I like this set up, if the sight fails you can just use the iron sights without any fuss.

Great information! Now I'm not sure if the whole lighting thing will be an issue...I actually haven't even shot my gun yet (bah, suburbs) but I'm thinking that all of my shooting will be done outside. Perhaps the red dot would be the better option. Or perhaps a reflex with sights that I can flip up and down?
God...all the options...I love this gun!

If you're shooting outside under a roof (as a lot of outdoor ranges have) then it's not an issue. Direct sun light is what really fades out the rectile.

I'll probably do most of my shooting at my parents who live out in the boonies about two hours away from here, so there won't be a roof of any kind. I'm guessing the red dot would serve me better?

There is no need for folding sights if your dot is cowitnessed to the tip of the front sight looking thru the irons.
In fact with a sight like this there is no need to even remove the front cover! Shoot both eyes open.
$40 several years ago. Parts box ever since until 5 weeks ago.
Severe lack of kool -- it doesn't even resemble the M68 CCO -- but shoots well.

does it matter where the red dot or reflex site is placed in conjunction with the other sites? I see chuck has his close to the front site. Can they be placed anywhere you want?

chuck may have alittle to say about this but the advantages to mounting it closer to the front sight is that it gives the shooter a larger field of view out side the scope(more aware of your surroundings).. which for those of us that go to tatical ranges is a +..

I find it much easier to transition between multiple targets with the dot out as far as I can push it. I shoot with both eyes open and the dot is just there when I swing the rifle up to eye level. The bullet goes wherever the dot is. If you can see the dot the bullet goes there.
Here's my 20 year old M4 Carbine and original M68CCO ("Aimpoint").

i just got my 3MOA NCStar red dot/laser combo in the mail today. it's on the rifle and i'll see how it works on friday. perfect cowitness of both dot and laser to front sight out of the box. comes with quick detach mount which holds really solid (we'll see how a few hundred rounds affects it). for $70 i'm impressed...so far.

Whoever posted the link to rrages -- Thanks. They got a 34mm ring with a short rail on it that should mount perfectly to my Colt clone. Been looking for a low profile way of adding a laser.... this looks like just the ticket. RRAGES.com GSG 5 Accessories

I would, but I have a $75 amazon GC I have to use up, so I'm stuck with whatever they have to offer.

So if I get the M3 clone with the high can't mount, will I need to get a riser to co witness the sight or will the high can't mount be enough to do it?

While I haven't used or even seen the multi reticle unit primary arms sells, I tend to stay away from the multi reticle units. I have not found one yet that can hold zero between reticles.

Finally got my red dot sight! Thanks for the suggestions everyone.
Now, can somebody point it to a tutorial on sighting a rifle? :\

Given the use for the 15 22, I elected to install the Walther PS 22 purchased from Midway. I currently have a m&P15T with an Aimpoint ML3 installed and like that system very much. When I purchased the 15 22, I chose the Walther PS22 because it is similar to the ML3 but much less expensive. It comes with a very sturdy mount and it coindexes with the factory iron sights. I also purchased a pair of Magpul BUIS sights to replace the factory sights. The factory rear sight will be installed on an early MP15 that is the standared m4 configuration. I purchased an Aimpoint Swede military sight from Midway when they had them. That is how I configured that early M4. They are great rifles. When I get a chance, I will post a photo of them.

I went with a Vortex Strikefire, just because of the unlimited lifetime warranty.
