Default How Do You Move Safety Selector MP15-22?

Can anyone give me a step by step (with pics would be awesome) of how to move the safety from the left side to the right side (I'm a lefty)? I know you have to take off the grip, let the detent and spring loose, but then how do you remove the saftey shaft and lever? Thanks.

1. Remove upper from rifle.
2. With the lower receiver upside down, remove hex head bolt inside grip and SLOWLY lift grip off of receiver.
3. Remove safety selector detent spring and rear takedown pin detent spring.
4. Hold hand over detent holes, turn lower over and catch brass detents when they fall out.
5. With hammer cocked, slide out safety selector.
6. Reinsert safety selector from other side.
7. Turn receiver upside down. Reinstall detent and detent springs.
8. Reinstall pistol grip.
9. Reinstall upper receiver.

Make sure and function check the rifle before any ammo gets loaded. Also, make sure that while you have the upper off, DO NOT let the hammer fly without using your hand to catch it. If it strikes the lower receiver (the bolts not there to stop it), it can and eventually will break something. Avoid dry firing the assembled rifle without a spend casing in the chamber or pulling the bolt off the breech face a little.

You can remove the selector on a standard AR15 without removing grips, etc.

Place the lever half way between SAFE and SEMI (or however your receiver is marked) and punch it out. The detent should be captured; nothing to spring out.

"Replacement is the reverse" as the saying goes but you'll have to depress the detent with a blade or something.

You can't reverse a standard selector so the MP15-22 part much be unique and have the detent slots on both edges.

While that will work with most AR-15 safety selectors, I've had a few safety selectors that the detent channel was cut too deep in the selector to let it punch out half way between semi and safe. The only reason I don't recommend trying it with the 15-22 is the safety is polymer, as is the receiver. I fear that you could damage the safety or the receiver by punching it out with it rotated between safe and semi. It only takes another minute to remove the grip, springs, and detents.

Good points. You caution is warranted with polymer parts.

Why move it? I shoot right and left shoulder and have for many years. I've never had a problem with the selector on the left side of the gun

I always shoot lefty (right handed left eye dominant) and it's just an inconvienceuncomfortable to put it on safe with the left thumb. It's like releasing the bolt with your left hand after loading a mag. Insert with the right, then switch hands to release the bolt or insert and twist the rifle to release which I don't like to do. It's just preferences. I've learned to adapt with rifle/handguns. They all seem to cater to right handed people.

I like to run ambi safeties on my AR's. I modified my 15-22 safety to accept the lever off a normal ambi safety.

With that said, I usually only disengage the safety with my thumb when using an ambi safety. I always use my trigger finger to reengage the safety. Without an ambi safety selector, I use the the pad under the knuckle of my trigger finger to disengage the safety.

I finally switched the safety to the right side of the lower. It was rather easy.

The selector itself is made for either side. No need to buy another lever. That money could go to better use like other accessories

Chuck knows what he's talking about.

I put the safety between safe and fire, then wiggled back and forth while pulling, and it came right out. The detent pin did not come out.

I then put the switch in on the opposite side until it rested against the detent pin, making sure the switch was oriented between safe and fire. I then came through the other side with a small screwdriver, and held down the detent pin; just enough to get the switch started.

Then, I just pushed and wiggled until it fell in to place.

That's nothing more. Simple.

Nothing like responding to an almost three-year-old thread.

I know, I know, this is an old post but good advise apparently is timeless because this was exactly what I was looking for. I wanted to replace the stock safety selector with a BAD ambidextrous safety selector and this step-by-step procedure did the trick. Mission accomplished!

Thanks,

John
