Maybe S&W would thread barrel for flash suppressor
Hey there guys,
New to the forum but I have been following the threads for a while... I love my 15 22 and had to send it back at first also for FTE and the like .
But I was wondering if Smith might be interested in helping out some of us first guys that got the short end of the stick? non threaded stick

I kind of doubt they'll thread your barrel, as they would probably say that theyre not a custom shop. BUT, you may be able to get them to put a new (threaded) one on for you at a fee of some sort.

Go ahead and ask. All they can do is say no.

I'd give the S&W performance center a call. If anybody there would do it, they would.

I Emailed them on Monday asking if they would either sell me a new barrel with the muzzle threaded and they said no, but to ask back in 6 months as things may change.

If enough of the pre flash hider owners called and emailed, maybe S&W would change their mind and sell the threaded barrels.
So, lets bug them.

Maybe with the new barrels, they would have the new ejecters attached. There are some machinists on this forum, and I believe you can find their services in the classified section. There are some thread adapters on ebay. Thompson/Center Arms, Inc. makes the barrels. Maybe they are the one to get ahold of. Gently of course, no shaking.

I'd rather see if smith would do it. That way they couln't give you any **** about ruining your warranty. I know guys on here have sent their's in with barrel threading and they didn't void the warranty. But, you never know when that could change. I'm with whoever said we should bug smith about getting our barrels threaded for free. Maybe even tell them we'll pay for shipping. Give them the old, " Your customer service has a great reputation how about blah blah blah etc"....... STRENGTH IN NUMBERS!!!!!

I'm guessing it would cost about $75 for a machinest to thread the barrel. For that price I can sell my current 15/22 and buy a new one with a threaded barrel and probably not even loose the $75.

Just got off the phone with S&W and they said that the threading of the original barrels are in review but that the answer is no for now.
My thoughts are that those of us that got the first ones also had to deal with a little trial and error over the ejector deal ,as did I, and that maybe a break on threading would be appropriate ...
Im not looking for completely free maybe just some discount.
Lets get some calls in and see what they might do since its in a being considered stage.

The problem with offering them new with it is that liberal states (like mine) threaded barrels are "evil" so are flash hiders...
Then Smith would have to make two models like they do with ARs.
Do you really need a flash hider on a 22? Do you shoot at night? Will a brake make a big difference?
So just casue we cant have cool toys, you cant either

They can just sell you liberal state people the original. It was your state that elected those fools. I do feel sorry for the people on this forum that have to go through that. I'm positive they are not the ones that voted for them.

I'm going for ADCO threading/fluting
I am having a FH added, as well as fluting. Wow! Looks awesome. Total cost will be $175, (threading 65, disasembly 35, fluting $75) about 1/3 the price of the gun itself! Hmm maybe I will pass on the fluting. But check out on their site how awesome it looks!

I would personally pass on the fluting as well. theres really no need for it with this gun. (other than it would probably look cool!) If I were you, I would do the disassembly myself, and save the $35. i dunno.. just thinking out loud I guess.

Smith is making two 15-22 models, the origional plain barrel, and one with flash hider. Would not be surprised to see Smith make more 15-22 models, perhaps with Magpul stuff, just like their ARs.

Fluting/Disassembly
I think you need a special tool to remove the barrel. As far as fluting to look cool..sure! Thats the whole reason for all of this!

Search on the forum here and you will find how to make a barrel removal tool out of PVC 3/4 id pipe.

Just to clarify. S&W cannot just void your warranty for having the barrel threaded. What they CAN do is deny a warranty claim IF the problem is directly related to the modification that has been made. Of course, they can also deny a claim if you have abused/misused, disabled any safety features, or made illegal modifications.
Look up the Magnuson Moss Warranty act for a little light reading.
Personally, I'd like to be able to buy a pre-threaded BBL direct from S&W, but I'll probably end up sending it in to ADCO, or Gemtech to have it threaded. Both of them are already tooled up for M&P15-22's.
ETA: With the way M&P15-22's are selling, I wouldn't be the least bit suprised if Tactical Solutions came out with a aftermarket threaded BBL for it.

Yes, aftermarket barrels from TacSol and others would be great. Several aftermarket barrel options for the 10-22, so the 15-22 should get its share.

lol, yup! A couple years ago, I had a Infiniti rep tell me that they werent going to cover a blown rod because of an aftermarket exhaust. I told him, "OK, thats fine. Ill have my lawyer give your boss a call and explain the Mag/Moss act with him." and like the flick of a switch, he changed tunes. He then gave me a (un-needed) loaner, and ended up replacing the entire motor. $9k, all on them!
It pays to know your rights!
