Default Riser for a red dot

Over the holidays I was given a gift card to Dick’s Sporting Goods, So today I stopped in to look for something for the 15-22. I found a TruGlo Red Dot and since it was about the same as my gift card, I got it. When I got home I realized it was a little too low on the gun to co-witness with the iron sights.

Does anyone know what size riser I would need to co-witness with the iron sights? I believe it needs to go up a 1/2 inch. Is this right?

Does anyone know where I can get a 1/2 inch riser anywhere from 2-4 inches long?

Thanks for the help

I've had good luck with the Yankee Hill risers.

There's this one, all one piece: Yankee Hill Machine Picatinny-Style Riser Mount 5-1/4" AR-15 Flattop Matte - MidwayUSA

Or if that's not quite right, you can go with a couple of the shorter ones: Yankee Hill Machine Picatinny-Style Mini Riser Mount 3/4" Length Aluminum Matte - MidwayUSA

Both will raise your scope 1/2 inch.

I just spent the past 2 hours looking for a mount. The only ones I found were the ones you are talking about. Burris also made a 1' long one but will be too small for what I want to do.

I found the yankee website an they make a 4" long 1/2" rise which is exactly what I want except with shipping it is $52 which is about $15 more than the red dot was

I think I will go with the 5.5" and if it is too long possibly trim off the long end.

Anyone else know of any? preferably cheaper options? (I know... getting rid of the gun would be the cheapest option but where is the fun in that?)

How about this? Good reviews and half the cost.

Generally speaking, I don't like using riser mounts if I can avoid them. Just one more thing that can affect tolerance stacking in your sighting system. If I do use one, I prefer one that clamps the full length of the mount.

Quick google search revealed the following.
NCStar riser

Unknown Brand Riser

B-Square Riser

Valdata Riser

Leapers Riser

ARMS riser

Another Unknown Brand Riser

I use a 3/4'' riser for co-witness purposes. The 3/4 rise will allow co-witness in the lower third of a large 40mm tube, and co-witness about in the middle of a 30mm. (with low mounts on each)

I use a Tapco "composite" riser. Good match with a polymer rifle.

If you only want 1/2'' rise, and only 2- 4 inch long, then YHM has what you're looking for.

I used a ProMag PM066 3/4" riser which works out for co-witness very well.

Where in your red dot lens do the iron sights line up? In the middle or lower? The red dot I have is slightly higher than ones I have seen on here and when I measured it, the iron sights line up 1/2 inch from the center of the red dot. So that is why i am looking for just a half inch riser.

thanks everyone else for the help, I still haven't found one that will work and be less $ than the red dot itself

Wouldn't it depend on the scope you have though?

I was thinking about getting a red dot scope but I have no clue what sized riser to get for it.

Dude.... what size red dot you got?

Here are pics of a 3/4 riser with a 40mm tube and a 30mm tube. You can find 3/4 risers for $20 everywhere.

The guy with the 1'' riser can't co-witness because most any red dot scope mount and body will be as tall as the sights when used with a 1 inch riser. Keep in mind your front sight post is only about 1 3/8'' tall. So no, it really doesn't matter what red dot you use with a 1 inch riser... just too tall for co-witness.

Go 3/4". I picked up a 1" because I'm stupid and didn't measure right. It does not co-witness. A 3/4" would have worked well.

Well...no. As you can see in the pics, a 1/2'' riser could be used with the 40mm. The rear sight aperture would be around the middle of the scope tube... just a hair higher. But I don't want that. --- I'd rather have the rear sight in the lower third of the 40mm scope tube. That helps if want to use the red dot but don't want to focus through the rear sight aperture. Otherwise, there's a lot of rear sight in the way of the tube face.

Just thought I'd add a few pictures to show the current level of the red dot with the iron sights.

That's the same 40mm red dot as the BSA in the pic.

I ordered this today...

Riser Mount Picatinny-style 1-2

A 4" long .5" riser. It should be what I need to get my scope (a Pursuit X1) centered.

And more clarification: .83" = 'Absolute Co-witness'
1.0" = 'Lower 1/3 Co-witness'

My preference is lower 1/3 co-witness so my MBUS don't obscure any more view thru my tube type red dot sight than necessary in case of battery failure or damage.

A LaRue Tactical QD mount allows removal of the optic and remount w/o losing zero. Pretty handy accessory, alltho kinda expensive. But, ya get what ya pay for.
