Default S&W M&P 15-22 Magazine Blue Follower

Just picked up my S&W M&P 15-22 from my local gun store here in So Cal today. My magazine is the one that has a Blue follower. I just noticed that its missing the "Loading Assist Button." Has anyone else picked up and 15-22 from a CA dealer and received a Magazine with a Blue Follower and "Load Assist Button?"

I'll probably go back to my local gun store tomorrow to see if other 15-22's contain the same issue. Also give S&W a call Monday morning.

The manual shows a "loading assist button," so I would assume my magazine is just missing it.

there is another guy up here with the Blue follower, he lives in NY. His didn't come with assist button either, I think it's because there is only 10 round to load so it's not needed.

Since it's a full size magazine designed to only load 10 rounds, it's physically impossible to put a load assist button on it. The follower will not travel all the way to the cutout.

I think I'm the guy Kdash was referring to and I'd like to shed some light on the subject.

The 10 round magazines from S&W are pinned to only hold ten rounds. Problem is, without the load assist button, you can only easily load five rounds, for the other five, you have to find something to stick into the hole where the button would have gone, and load it that way, which can be a huge pain.

If you look here, I've detailed a solution and it has worked quite well.

http://smith-wessonforum.com/smith-w...ml#post1247997

You can either do that or wait for Black Dog to make a shortened 10 round magazine, it's up to you. They have said they are working on one, but don't expect a working prototype for a month or so, so it's hard to say when they'll go on sale.

And just because everyone likes to see a train wreck, here's that video of me trying to load that blue follower mag.

YouTube - Smith & Wesson M&P15-22 Clip For The State of NY

I would also like to add that they certainly could have added a load assist button and THEN pinned it to ten rounds. There's no reason why they couldn't have. Maybe S&W is trying to save money on load assist buttons? Also, don't bother calling them as they don't really have a solution.

The magazines with the blue follower do not have the load assist button. I called Smith & Wesson last week about this isssue and asked if they were going to release a true 10 round magazine with a load assist button? The customer service guy was clueless. He couldn't answer any of my questions. He also didn't seem to care about my complaints regarding this. My only hope is they rethink this and get on the ball and address it!

Not to hi jack this thread but does anybody know the signifigance of a black line on the follower of a 25rd magazine? The magazine that came with my gun has a black line that looks like it was drawn with a Sharpie on the top of the follower that runs parrellel to the bore. The extra magazines I just got do not have this stripe drawn on them.

Default And what about cleaning these things?

Since we cannot disassemble these pinned mags, how are we meant to adequately clean them? I always take my mags apart and fully clean each component.

Default HI

I also live in NY and i have the black line on the top of the follower. I am going to buy a 25 round magazine and take it to the range. THey cant see that it has 25 and i doubt they will care as long as i fire slow and not rapid fire all of the 25 at once.
I also was going to ask my grandpa for a nut and bolt to put through the follower to make it easier to pull it down which i think will work just fine. Whats the point of spending 27 dollars to convert it if i can just buy a new 25 round one for 20 bucks and put a not and bolt in the 10 rd one.

Why not spend the few extra $$$ to make them legal?

Anyway, I talked to a cop and asked what would happen if somebody got caught with a 25rd mag. She said she would probably just take them and warn them not to use them again at the very least. Take that as you will.

I have the same on my blue follower. I believe its actual markings from the Extractor as my extractor appears to have similar markings on the bottom side closes to the follower.

No the mark on mine was on a brand new magazine and is not a scrape mark from the extractor. In fact as I shoot the gun more the black mark is wearing off.

Mine is brand new as well. I have yet to shoot it. I believe they are test fired at S&W.

the black mark is an inspection mark put there after test firing to verify the shooter ensured the magazine was empty. all current S&W followers should have a mark

I have a 10 round shorty with a load assist button so it's entirely possible. The top of the mag and the slotted area is the same on both the full and short mags. S&W managed no problem to oput it on the shorty, so saying it is physically impossible is just not accurate.

Sorry, you are only partially correct. The round count has nothing to do with it; neither does the follower itself. The fact is that S&W CHOOSES not to put a load assist in before pinning the long magazine. Remove the pin and the floor plate and the follower drops right out, just like thr shorty and the 25 round magazine.

So how am I partly correct? The poster said it was physically impossible to put a load assist on a 10 round mag. I said that is incorrect and the short 10 round mag proves that esp. since the top is identical to the 25 round mag.

Don't understand why you guys with the 10 round limit don't just buy this and solve all of your problems, and it looks better than a 10 pinned for 25. I have one and it works great.

This thread is 4 years old!
A 10 round short magazine has a red follower with black load assist button.
A 10 round long magazine has a blue follower with no load assist button. It also has a pin that prevents the follower from going all the way down.

You can knock out the pin on a 10 round long and then put a load assist button of your own making in. But the magazine will be illegal in some states.

So, while 'physically impossible' isn't totally correct, it's not possible without hacking the magazine. Once you take the pin out, it's no longer a 10 round long, it's a 25 round long with a blue follower, which is illegal in some states.

Use a golf tee. Works better than the load assist and does not require modification of the magazine.

After removing the pin, load 10 rounds to see where the follower is. Drill a small hole and install a rivet. This effectively makes the modification not easily modifiable per CO state law. May be the same in other states. At least its harder to modify than knocking the little pin out.

You seem to be deliberately misreading the post. He was referring to the 10-round LONG, magazine. And yes, he is correct to a point. The follower cannot be removed under normal circumstances because its movement is blocked by the restricter pin. On that basis it IS impossible to insert a load assist button.

It CAN be done if one permanently modifies the magazine by removing the pin, as I mentioned previously. What can or cannot be done with the short magazine has nothing to do with anything. Do you have any 10-round long magazines? If not I suggest, respectively of course, that you really don't know what you're talking about.
