Default Bolt Disassembly

New member and new owner. Owners manual doesn't show how to take apart the bolt assembly. Tried search but came up empty. Can anyone direct me to thread that shows how to take it apart or give specifics. Thanks for the help.

Question Bolt Disassembly

Welcome aboard. Why would you want to disassemble the bolt carrier? Are you having a specific problem?

If you take the bolt apart you'll let all the magic out. Who would ever want to take one apart?

smith and wesson m&p 15/22 review breakdown and reassembly - YouTube

Check out this YouTube video at about the 4:00 mark. It is not the best video but it will give you an idea how to do it.

Compress the spring and the rotate the metal bar so the groves in it can slide out of the plastic tab. After a couple attempts it is easy.

Yeah, I know, and that still surprises me. As others have said, YouTube.com is your friend for things like this. Here's One 15-22 Cleaning Video, maybe not the best, but it does show bolt disassembly.

Red face Bolt Disassembly

Guess I misunderstood. Certainly, take the carrier group out and remove the recoil spring for routine cleaning. I thought you wanted to go so far as to remove the firing pin and extractor! Either will not "remove the magic"!

Thanks to everyone. Had one of those Homer Simpson moments (DUH!) when I saw the suggestions about YouTube. I'm claiming the old fart excuse...my mind just doesn't go there immediately.
Not having any problems but after seeing the fouling on the bolt face, I want to clean the firing pin and bolt better. Don't understand why S&W is against taking the bolt assembly down for better cleaning. I have a SigSauer AR15 and routinely take bolt apart for cleaning. Just didn't want to strip the 15-22 down if there was some reason that I didn't know about. I'm OCD when it comes to cleaning firearms and can't imagine firing pin gets a good cleaning without disassembly. Any comments?

I don't feel it's necessary to remove the firing pin for routine cleaning, but occasionally for a thorough clean isn't a bad idea.

When you push out the retaining pin make sure there is something to catch the firing pin (which is ejected). After cleaning put it in with the notch to the flat side and push the pin back in to retain it.
