Mine is a Magpul MIAD.
First you need a 5/32 wrench to remove the factory stock.

Then you will find 2 springs (undone the grip screw slowly and be careful as they will pop out at the same time)
the front one is the safety retention pin spring and a blue one for lower pin retention spring.

Mine is a Magpul MIAD kit. But I use only a small back strap as the other two larger back strap will leave a gap on the back end where the back strap meet the frame.

A small bob of epoxy glue and cotton ball is used to seal the back end of the grip where the blue spring will reside.

I retain the factory 5/32 in mine becaues Magpul grip screw is a normal slot head and does not seem to be well made as the factory one.

This is how it look now with a MFI's barrel shroud and Magpul furnitures.

How much of gap was there? I was going to get the MOE grip but now I'm wondering if there will be a gap with that one also. Thanks for the pics and the info.

the gap created by the larger backstraps on the MIAD are inconsequential IMO.

search the picture thread if you want to see what people have put on their rifles.

I prefer the original grip on all my M16-type rifles. Maybe five bucks.

Great thread! I changed out my grip and at the same time switched the safety over to the right side (I'm a southpaw). It was a snap. There is a groove and detent hole on both ends of the selector for the spring / plunger.

Check my sticky thread at the top of these forums for videos on how to replace the grips.

I myself went the Hogue route and love every minute of it!

Default Hogue is the answer...........

I have a Hogue grip on my 15-T. For some reason (maybe my upbringing as a mall ninja or something), I tried the Magpul MIAD.

I think it is a fine grip but it did not feel right to me so I got another Hogue. I've used them since the early 70's on revolvers and they are the best--maybe not the prettiest but they are the best for me.

Anyone interested in trading a black Magpul AFG for my black Magpul MIAD?

Even up and each will pay his/her shipping?

Houge AR-15 overmolded is what I have. No cutting or drilling needed for springs. I wasnt sure so I took it to the gun store and they showed me that it can be installed without drilling. Works awesome and I have had zero issues since I installed it

Ordered the Hogue overmolded pistol grip for my 15-22 from Midway and after watching the very helpful video ( therefore no unexpected suprises ) by Brett248Vista I will be all set to go when it arrives. I don't like to be a copycat but don't like spending money on things that won't/don't work. Love this forum and have picked up on ideas that I will want on my rifle. Thanks

I have an adjustable Command Arms Accessories (CAA) UPG16 Grip. Rubberized Front and Rear Pads for comfort. You get 3 Front and 3 Rear Pads, so you can adjust your fit.

Cheers!

I prefer the old A1 grip, although they take a little chasing down. What some may not know is that if you take the old rubber M1 carbine mag covers and heat them up with a hair dryer, they will fit nicely on the bottom of those grips and give you an almost waterproof storage compartment. Just an old GI fix but they work like they were made for it.

Hogue all the way. Perfect in every sense. I've got Hogues on my S&W .38's and my Ruger 22/45 also. They just work!

Same here, 3/16th for me too not 5/32. I put on a UTG brand FDE grip, fits perfect and looks nice. Same one I have on my AR-15

Get a Hogue. EXTREMELY comfortable, goes on with no problems.

NOTICE:

When changing your pistol grip, be VERY careful because a tiny spring will most likely fall out. Don't lose this, it is necessary for the selector switch to work properly.

I went with the Tango Down Battlegrip myself. Install was simple and I am a fan of adding storage to a rifle. Plus I am not a fan of finger grooves or ledges so the swooped design of the grip was perfect and feels great in my hand while I'm shooting.

I have always liked Pachmayr grips for my guns, but for this one I went with Tac Star. Tac Star and Pachmayr are owned by the same company, their advertising suggests that they are now sharing designs. This Tac Star set feels as good as some of my Pachmayr's on other guns, but was about half the price. Huge improvement over stock.

This pic shows a Pachmayr on the Mossberg, and Tac Star front and rear grips on the 15-22.

Magpul makes a spacer that will fill the gap. Its purely cosmetic though. Here's a pic of mine with the MOE grip without the spacer. I'm not sure how well you can see the gap in this pic but its not really that noticable. There are some good videos on youtube that will walk you through the steps of changing your grip if you still need help with that.

My PC model had a Hogue grip on it. It was ok but not near as good as the Ergo I replaced it with. The Ergo is softer but not flexing and sticks to your hand regardless of sweat on your hands. Also tried the Ergo overmolded w/palmshelf that is going on my 3-gun AR and I liked that a lot but put the regular Ergo back on the AR15-22.

MOE+ here (in foliage green).

Loved the MOE I had previously, but also liked the feel of the Hogue that was on the Ruger SR22 at my gun club. The MOE+ is a great combination of both, and the original MOE is now on the 'Bay...

Default Thanks for this thread

I installed my MAID and the spring dropped. 20 min later of stuffing, super glue, filing flat the MAID works fine.

Had a Houge, was ok, wanted the MAID because that is what I have on my M&P Sport. MAID has great inserts for things like 123 batteries.

I agree, I just put one on mine and really like the feel of it vs the stock grip. But I must admit, if I had not read the thread about the two springs, I probably would still be crawling around on the carpet looking for them.

Put this on my 15-22 and came as standard on my RRA LAR-15 AR1251. Great grip.

Is there a difference in the Hougue Monogrip and the Overmolded grip? My LGS only had one Monogrip left so I grabbed it.

Thank you for that fitting tip.
I'll now be able to mount a miad on my MP 15-22.

on the Hogue website, the term "Monogrip" seems to be reserved for the one-piece handgun grips and "Overmolded" or O.M. grips are the rifle grips.

I have seen some vendor websites refer to the rifle grip as a "Monogrip" but with the same part number as the O.M.

Bottom line, if it fits your rifle, I wouldn't worry about it. It is probably the same thing.

If you get the Magpul MIAD AR-10 wedge, you can use the extended backstraps with virtually no gap between the lower receiver and grip back strap.

I replaced the stock grip with a Hogue overmolded grip. While I liked the grippy feel I realized the grooves were too far apart for my "girly" hands. I put a Magpul MOE grip on it 2 weeks ago and have used it several times since. I much prefer the Magpul. I also used the stock hex head bolt that came with the gun. It worked perfectly for the Magpul...much easier to use than the slot head bolt supplied.

Anyone want to buy a slightly used Hogue grip? email me and we'll work it all out.

that is the problem with the Hogue. it has such deep finger grooves that it forces your fingers into them. It is fine if that is the way you normally grip. I wish they weren't so aggressively shaped.

Another thing I don't like about them is that, at least on mine, it is designed so that you need either an AR or AK shell casing to open the storage compartment on the bottom.... which is fine since i have the Hogue on my AK.

Still, I like the Magpul better where you can open the bottom compartment with your finger.

I've changed out the Magpul MOE grip on my 15-22 MOE (small gap between the MOE grip and the 15-22 lower receiver... gives an occational pinch to the grip hand webbing between the thumb and fore finger.. Ouch!) for a Ergo (ambi). The Ergo grip is higher on the lower receiver and for us folk with large hands, I've found the Ergo grip a lithe larger than the Hogue grip. I have the Ergo on two other AR type weapons.

Aim small,

Hogue overmolded fits my big old gorilla hands perfectly.

I'm not sure that the storage compartment will ever see use by me due to the afforementioned ridiculously tight fit, but that's my only complaint w/ it so far.
