I am the owner of 3 Tactical 22's. The S&W 15-22, the PUMA PPS-22 (made by Pietta of Italy) and as of this week, the SIG 522.
I am afraid that the SIG 522 is head and shoulders above all the others in terms of reliability. It shoots ANY brand of 22's without a burp and shoots every time. It is also easier to clean since it is easy to remove the hand guards without any tools. So while I still like the S&W and PUMA, I would rate the SIG as an A+, the S&W as a B+ and the PUMA as a B.

Great observation and I can't argue with it.. But I bought my 15-22 because I wanted an AR platform, and the two others listed, do not deliver that experience.

Cleaning the 15-22 is pretty simple. You push out the rear take down pin, break the upper from the lower, push out the front pivot pin. Pull out the bolt carrier group and clean it outside of the firearm and cleaning the barrel is as simple as a boresnake, one pass and your good to go. I tend to put some CLP on my finger and slop around the chamber and the inside of the Upper Receiver and then dry it off.

unless you're running and gunning through muddy trenches, why do you need to take the handguard off to clean the rifle? all functioning surfaces are easily accessible with some patches, a toothbrush and a boresnake. i think this is a similar situation to any bolt gun. how many guys remove the stock to clean the underside of the barrel even after hunting in poor weather.

like brett said, a boresnake from down the barrel and you're pretty much good to go.

i will grant you that removing the handguard is a pain since a barrel nut removal tool isn't included with the rifle.

as far as reliability, i can't comment, i have never shot a sig522.

in any event, i'm jealous that you have 3 tacticool .22s.

I really like the looks of the Sig R522 SWAT. I have one on order and impatiently waiting.

I bought the M&P 15-22 simply to get more M4 trigger time without a second mortgage on my house. Box of Winchester 333 thru her yesterday for a whopping cost of $10. Same grip, stock, selector, magazine release, etc., etc. as my service M4.

grats on that one! beware of the "magazine wobble"! other than that you should have lots of fun. i love those guns and cant make up my mind on that or the 15/22 ive shot the sig and loved it, but i was wanting an AR platform gun. ahh time will tell.

Thanks. I did some reading about the 522 prior to purchase and mag wobble was mentioned a few times but not something that affected operation. Is there more to it that I should be aware of? (These things I find out -after- I buy it)

I own a Sig 522, too. This little rifle rocks! Unlike my 15-22, the Sig shoots any/all ammo. It even ran OK on 20 yr. old Remington!!! The only thing I do not like about the 522 is the way long trigger pull. The trigger is very smooth, but travel is long.
Call me superstitious, but I bring the Sig with me when I take the 15-22 out to shoot as a back up; the 15-22 has been very reliable, so I haven't needed my "back up"! HA!
The Sig magazine was very tight to get in and out. Sig sent me another, and it was a little snug. I ended up buyin 2 more from Black Dog Machine. They fit and work flawlessly. The 522 is a nice addition to anyone's black rifle collection.
The magazine "wobble" doesn't seem to affect performance. The 522 feeds fine, according to what I have been reading. BD's latest mags seem to work and fit great.

Thanks for the encouraging words. I think i'll order some of those mags tonite.Though, the mag that came with my rifle is loooooose in the well, not tight.

Kevin(owner), at Black Dog Machine is a great guy, and will answer your questions. Seems to be very down to earth, and knowledgeable. I know BD made Sig's mags, but I believe some of Sig's lowers came thru the mold a little undersized(narrow), like mine did. Sig blames BD, BD blames Sig. Doesn't matter who's fault it is....I want a functioning mag; that's all. The mags I received have the "Brownell's" logo on them and are black, they look like a AR mag. They fit and function perfectly!
My 522 has functioned perfectly , hope your experience is the same!

Finally got a chance to take my Sig SWAT to the range today. I'm glad I have both the S&W and Sig. They are both great rifles.

Now, the only problem is: deciding WHICH of these cool little rifles you like the best!!! Congrats.
