Default Adding AR-15 Front Sight Tower to MP15-22

I love the A2 Front Tower sight look (if thats the correct description for the typical M16/M4 triangle front sight) ...so I think I will buy one and just slap it on the barrel. Well that's what I am hoping... does it need gunsmithing since there is no gas tube, ie can it just be bolted on?

There seems to be various diameters..will these fit the MP15-22 barrel? What size should I get?

And any recommendations as to where to get them? I pretty much buy all my stuff at midwayusa.com.

Thanks for any help/advice you may have....

its going to need some fitting for sure. the a2 sight im pretty sure lightly presses on and is then pinned in place.. the 15-22 barrel is roughly .667 but im not sure what the holes r in the sight.. it can be done but its going to definately take some fitting and probably alot of cursing lol

I was thinking of doing the same thing. I think the front sights come in a .750 and a .625 diameter as you can find at midwayusa. With the barrel on the 15-22 being .667 as belt_fed said, I could see both being a challenge to fit. I'd be interested to hear if anyone knows a good way of how to do it.

If it were me, I'd go with the .625 diameter and then hand it and the barrel to a machine shop. They can easily bore it out to .667 and mill the half round pin slots into the barrel so you can pin it in place. Then if you get one of Tacticool's delta ring adapters you can probably make real M4 hand guards work. (You will also need a steel M4 end cap).

The sight bases listed above match my specs for the M16A1 and M16A2 barrel diameters at the sight base/gas port.

0.625" is the diameter at the gas port on the A1. Barrel forward of that is 0.575" other than 0.600" just aft of the threaded area for the suppressor.

Threaded portion at the muzzle is 0.1875" long.

Distance from the end of the threads to the larger diameter area under the sight is an even 4.500". That area is exactly 2.000" long.

For ease of machining I recommend an initial turning of 0.625" for a distance of 6.6875" from the muzzle. (0.185" threaded area plus 4.5" set back of front sight tower.)

Second turning of 0.600" to a distance of 4.6875" from the muzzle. This leaves the 2" long area of 0.625" diameter for the front sight tower and will put your sight the standard distance from the muzzle to accept a bayonet, etc.

This distance set back from the muzzle will require shortening the 15-22 handguard at least "one hole." If you can turn the barrel this should be the simple part.

The pins holding the front sight in place are drilled after the sight is mounted. You may to consider some robust set screws instead as all this stuff has to come off to pull the barrel.

Sounds like a lot of work!

Yikes! does sound like a lot of work and complicated. Will a competent gunsmith be able to do this without too much problem? There is a gunsmith nearby me that does the threading on MP15-22, I'll send him an email.

Decking out my 15-22 is more of an obsession then my "real" MP-15T ever was! So much fun.

Chuck - thanks for the detailed response...

Chuck are you talking about machinIng the barrel down to a smaller diameter? Wouldnt it be easier to space out the site?

It would be easier to bore the sight out.. and add set screws... or role pins.. but that's up to the man paying for the work

That's what I was thinking... Why not just chuck the sight post up in a mill and bore it out to size and then pin it on the barrel.

It would be fairly easy to do that, and you could easily convert this to use M4 hand guards using the adapter from tacti.

I've kicked it around...

Boring an M16A1 front tower remains an option as does sleeving an A2.

I also have a True Shot Technologies 15-22 A2 front sight. Perfect fitment.

I aligned mine using a laser stud finder placed on the rear of the upper receiver with the laser going forward making sure it's centered and then lined up the front sight post hole to the laser.

I'm running a True Shot Technologies A2 on my 15-22 as well. It's the way to go. Fits right to the barrel and adds a nice weight to it to boot. Definitely enhances the looks of the gun as well.

I ordered true shot technologies A2 sight a couple days ago. Looking forward to it =). By the way, did you notice this thread is from 2 years ago? They were probably discussing options pre-Trushot Technologies.

I will be offering a complete kit for putting on your favorite two piece hand guard.
It will have our barrel thread converter, Mil. Spec. delta ring assembly, handguard cap, and the front sight tower with bayonet lug, but without the sight post, detent or spring.

That's a great idea Tacticool! I have to ask though, will there be options on the components? Meaning, for those of us who either already have a front tower to opt out of the one in the package to cut costs or at least, getting a front sight tower that is ban compliant? I'm really beginning to dislike that word, "COMPLIANT"...

For now the only option is a front sight post with or without a bayonet lug.
Yes "compliant" smells of "papers please" Eventually all States will be Free States again.
End of political ranting. There is another page for that.
