Default Latest Serial numbers on 15-22

I saw that Davidsons had gotten in a new batch of 15-22's, so I contacted them and asked if they could give me the three letters of the serial numbers. I had them check the models that I am interested in...the threaded barrel model, the unthreaded model and the Talo model. They have an approximate total of 224 rifles available as of now. The serial numbers are DTU****, DTX****, DTZ***, and the latest one "DUA". I have not seen a DUA reported here, so I believe that DUA should be the most current model, and IF S&W has started to produce "latest spec" models , then a DUA gun may have all the fixes incorporated in them. Several if's and assumptions here I know. I also know that at one point S&W said that one could not predict whether or not a rifle would have problems by the serial numbers, but that may not be true now.

I am going to run by my local gun store- tried to go yesterday but got tied up-and see if they have gotten any new stock in with the DUA numbers. If not, and if I decide to buy one now, I'll have them send me the DUA with the highest number. I think one can request this, or at least I know it has been done in the past.

Interesting fact that I turned up with all my poking around here: This is of course taken only from this forum. As far as I can tell from searches on the posts here, S&W 15-22's have the following letter prefixes:
DSZ, DTA, DTB, DTD, DTE, DTH, DTM, DTX, DTU, DTZ, and now DUA. There may be some others, but these are what my search turned up- although I swear that I remember seeing a DTY and a DTW, but maybe I just lost another brain cell.

If we use just the ten prefixes I found, and assuming that the numeric range in each prefix is 0001 through 9999, and not counting the new DUA's, S&W has made at least a hundred thousand 15-22's. That estimate is probably low, since we usually get posts here from those with problems, and everyone doesn't have problems, so a prefix different than the ones I use here could be out there somewhere. If one counted the number of failures reported in this forum the percentage of failures of the numbers made has to be very small. It would be real interesting to know if the number of failures is going down.

Glad someone is paying attention!

There does seem to be a gap between DTM and DTX. At least as reported here. DTX is a very common serial in postings and all seem to be only a couple months since purchase.

I just picked up S/N is DTX02**. I see from another thread that the DTX serial numbers are the newest out.
I have not fired it as of yet.
Of course, with all my research before I purchased this weapon, I had not heard of one issue, until I can to the S&W forum, D'oh! I should have checked here first I guess. Hopefully mine will be OK.

I think you'll be just fine

I just put another 525 rounds of CCI Blazer (Value Pack) 40g, high velocity, through my DTX1xxx and zero issues. I'm also using 5 previous version mags (modded for 10 round capacity), zero feed issues or any snags...this gun is very accurate and fun to shoot.

So that's 1000 rounds and 1 FTEject, I'm still a very happy camper! And knowing that if it starts acting up, I can send it back to S&W for revampment is a comforting feeling

I just bought a DTX3*** 13 days ago in Ca. My magazine has a blue lip not red. What's up if anything with the color?

Jack, thanks for the reassuring words! I am just nervous now that I got this rifle, after much convincing the wife I "needed" it, not just wanted it ,lol, and if it has problems, well, I will have to try and explain to her why a $460 rifle has to be sent back to the mfg for repairs.

Your S/N is a little lower than mine, when did you pick up your rifle? Do you have the red star stamp on your manual? I have heard of these "Blue Springs" but I see nothing like that on my rifle...

I bought mine from BudsGunShop.com and got it toward the end of February (I want to say around the 25th or so?).

My owner's manual has a Blue star stamped on the back cover. If you look toward the lower righthand corner (on the back of the manual below the S&W address), there should be a revision number.

Mine says: REV:MP15-22_121709. I "think" this indicates the revision date for this particular manual which I interpret as being on/about 12/17/09. So I think it's pretty current. And my manual has TWO pages discussing recommended ammo (I've never seen any gun manufacturer go to such length regarding different brands of ammo).

And yeah I was worried about having to send mine back for repairs too but so far, I've been lucky I guess. Mine does not have Blue springs but the extractor seems to be an updated version (there's another thread that discusses this and the OP posted actual pictures of the older extractor vs. the revised one). Some VERY thoughtful guys/gals on this forum

I put 525 rounds through it this past Monday and experienced 1 FTE (toward the very end of my shooting period and the chamber/extractor appeared to be dirty). And today I put another 525 rounds through it and zero issues. I cleaned it very thoroughly in between these two sessions and I think if you keep everything clean (and use lubrication sparingly), load each magazine properly, and stick to quality high velocity .22LR ammo you'll be ok

Oh, your wife is going to LOVE shooting this gun (my girlfriend had a "blast" shooting it!)

Mine has a Blue Star but is revision 062209.

Only discussion of ammo is "use .22LR ammo." Glad I read that before I tried to stuff 5.56mm NATO in the little critter.

haha...I would like to see you try and shove a 5.56 into that .22lr mag!

My manual is dated the same as yours. Red star on back. Did you have issues with your rifle? Whats your S/N prefix?

My DTM-serial, Blue Star manual, M&P15-22 blew her extractor at round 326 or so mid-December. Second weekend after 300 rounds the first.

Went to S&W immediately and was back on Christmas Eve. Over 1000 rounds since with only a handful of failures to feed. All feeding failures were CCI, by the way; the Winchester 333 is shooting beautifully.

Default New DTU69XX

Just bought mine yesterday and have not had a chance to fire it yet. But, like many of you, finding the education I get reading these posts very helpful! According to the speculation here, my manual is from 06/09, but the rifle itself is from DTU era. We'l see what she does. I've have a pretty hefty quantity of 22 ammo so I'll get a chance to experiment right away. Here's hoping for the best!

I have a 15-22 A1 DUA. No mark or star or anything on the manual. DOES NOT MATTER. SHOOTS FLAWLESSLY.ALL BRANDS. Does not care. Clears out every magazine with out a problem. Have somewhere near 1000+ rounds fired so far. NOT 1 PROBLEM. Field strip it and bore snake it and clean it after every 250 rounds or so. Love this gun! Just need to get a few accessories now.

Default New 15-22

I also just purchased one this past Saturday. It is labelled DTU 69XX. Have not had a chance to fire it yet, but hopefully soon. I have a number of different rounds and will be happy to report my findings to the group. Guess I'm also learning how to use this post! Sorry for the duplication!

I purchased on yesterday DUA serial. It has a blue spring which I was to from a rep that it is the newer version. The star on the manual is only for who packed the gun. The gun shot perfectly with the Federal ammunition.

Yesterday, I bought DUA002X. I haven't made it to the range yet but it's sure a fine looking rifle (complete with flash suppressor).

I purchased my 15-22 about a month ago. It's S/N is DTX31XX and it had the flash suppresser on when I got it so I'm thinking its a newer manufacture. Before today it has run fairly well with only a couple issue with about 400 to 500 rounds through it. Today at the range I had several instances where the rifle did not cycle completely. The spent rounds did not eject properly because the bolt did not travel back far enough to reach the ejector. At least I think this is what happened because the bolt did not go back and reset the hammer. I have been using Federal bulk exclusively from the start with this problem just happening today.

Has anyone else had this? I have read a number of post here and the FTE's are usually the result of the ejector not being aligned properly. Mine seems fine, just not enough force to move the bolt back all the way. (Maybe just a couple bad rounds in the box and I found them today.)

I was also wondering if anyone knows what the difference is between the silver springs and the blue springs. Is one type stronger or weaker than the other? My rifle has the silver but it seems most newer ones have blue or blue springs are installed after the S&W rework.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Mine is a month old also and the serial number is DTX5XXX. After a little over 200 rounds, I had FTEs resulting from a missing extractor, pin and spring. Sent it back to S&W this past Tuesday.

Just picked mine up today. S/N DUA48XX. No star on the manual and the revision is 032210. It does not recommend Remington or Winchester Wildcat ammo. I wont get to shoot it until next weekend.

Default Latest Serial Number 15-22

Just found and joined the forum. Ordered the CA model 811032 yesterday sight unseen. It is Serial# DTX5***. Will pick up 4/12 and shoot the same day.

Thanks for all the good posts, observations, cautions (Safety forcing), etc. All this should save headaches.

Figure on putting Federal and Winchester and some 20yr Federal Classic HV rounds for break in. Will go a little slow for first few rounds, snaking about every 5 shots for the heck of it.

Will let all know results.

I've shot both out of my DTX1xxx and I didn't have a problem with either. Next time I go shoot, I'm going to try my luck with remington subsonic.

Thank you. So far so good. I had one failed round out of the first 200, but I think that was due to the ammunition. It was Federal, as recommended, but didn't seem to be an ejector issue.

I picked mine up from the BX at Nellis AFB last Sunday. S/N was "DUA" and the magazine had the red follower, also, the spring on bolt assembly was blue. Went there today to pick up some ammo and they are now carrying magazines for the M&P 15-22...so I had to get an extra!

Mine is DUA purchased last week. Any suggestions on accurate ammo? I bought a value pack of federal and don't think they're that great. Shots are all over the place with spreads of 3-4"

Thanks man, i've been lurking for a week or so before i picked mine up and learned alot before i even owned one. Really a great place and very informative forum, doesnt stick to the classic bitch fit and arguing usually associated with a forum.

Thanks to all for their serial number reports. It sure looks like that the latest numbers "DU*****" may very well have all the problems fixed. So far at least I haven't seen any OOB reports on the latest numbers reported here. Thanks again and good shooting to all.

Mine is a DTE and I have had absolutely no problems with it. I have fired about 1500 rounds through it consisting of about 7different brands, including some hollow points, and even a bag of about 200, 10 year plus old ammo that I do not know the brand of it. I am very happy with it. I think a lot of the problems people have is due to improper loading of the shells in the magazines. Several people have written about this. Also, I have yet to clean it and still no problems with firing or accuracy.
