Default Magazine Problem or Rifle Problem??

In the process of putting over 1000 rounds downrange, all from magazines that were carefully loaded one round at a time, I have experienced an occasional top round flipping upright and getting jammed in the feed lips when the bolt slammed into it.

I am convinced that the problem is with the mags so I called S & W to ask if I could return them for inspection. The customer rep insisted that I should send the rifle back along with all three of my magazines so they could look at it.

Have others here had Smith & Wesson handle the magazine burps this way? My rifle has never experienced a FTE or OOB, and the only times it hasn't fed have been the vertical rounds.

Fed EX label arrived today and the 15-22 and mags will go back in tomorrow. I will look forward to it's return in pristine condition and appreciate S & W's efforts.

I have put about 14k rounds though mine. I get about 1% mag snags (as you are describing). Never sent back to S&W. Though, I think I am getting less than 1% from about 10k on.... I don't pay it much attention anymore. Every half dozen mags or so I flip a round out from the mag. No biggie.

I had the same kind of problems as you. I had 3 mags, one old style that came with the rifle and 2 new style that I bought. They were all labeled so I could identify which if any were causing problems... All of my problems were with the old style mag (labeled 22LR) When I contacted our regional S&W rep he was happy to replace my mag, but did not want me to send in the rifle if I hadn't had any other problems. I was actually hoping to send in the gun to get it brought up to current specs with the blue springs, but it really does work fine as is. Since I got the mag replaced plus one extra, all is well with my 15-22. BTW it is a DTX1XXX that so many people talk about in this forum.

Mine is a DTX1*** and it seems to run great except for the mag. snags.

The only blue springs I have found in it are in the rear take-down pin detent and the disconnector Are there any other blue springs in the updated rifles?

Also has a blue star on the back of the manual if that means anything.

Was wondering. Do you get the mag snag ONLY when rapid firing??? I have 4 gen 1 mags and all snag as yours does, but only when rapid firing, and then only occasionally.

I've had mag snags when both rapid and slow firing.

Try bending your hammer spring like in the 15 min trigger job.. if the bolt don't have to fight the hammer spring then it will cycle harder to the rear allowing alittle more time for the mag to properly seat the next rd..

No, the mag snags have occurred with both rapid fire and slow fire.

Do you mean cutting off one leg of the hammer spring or bending the trigger spring legs like in the 15 minute job?

I have tried a couple of different AR triggers and hammers that I had on hand all with the same results. One of them I had modified via the 15 minute route which gave a much improved trigger pull over the factory job but still had mag snags.

As a side note...I also tried a RRNM trigger. It fired fine and the bolt would retract and reset the hammer but when the bolt was at its most rearward position it would hang up on the hammer and not cycle back into battery. I believe that was because the increased hammer spring tension in the RRNM placed too much pressure against the underside of the bolt. It only took about three rounds fired to realize that that wasn't going to work so I went back to a standard AR hammer/trigger set.

Not sure what a RRNM trigger might be, but I shot the Rock River Two-stage Trigger for several hundred rounds thru my M&P15-22.

The "15 minute AR15 trigger job" worked so well I didn't buy a two stage for this rifle.
