Default M&P 15-22 scope?

Hi Guys,
I got the reflex red dot for my 15-22 and truthfully i dont like it. I want to go to the range and actually get to shoot at the target and roll it back and see the bullet holes in the middle. I want to also be able to take it to a place by me that has 100-200 yard ranges and be able to shoot decently. What kind of scope do you guys recommend.

1-4x, fixed 4x and 3-9x are the typical power scopes many use. However, if you want to see bullet holes at 200yds you might need something more. The best deal on a Hubble type optic I have seen lately is a Simmons 6.5-20x. Normally $250 at Midway, on sale for $110. if you want to see .22lr holes in paper at 100yards+ better get you a good spotting scope, thats a very small hole to see that far away.

scaredstr8,

I have a BSA 6x24 and REALLY enjoy it. I prefer shooting between 50-100 yds and can clearly see EVERY shot. The scope may look and seem a bit over kill, but.... for a little super plinker it works perfectly for what I enjoy. This is the first BSA scope I've purchased and have been pleased with its performance. The quality and cost seemed reasonable to me.

i bought my M&P MOE for plinking and target practice, with hope that it would carry over when i use my AR later this summer. i also use .22 MK 111 for pistol practice. i used the MK's all last summer, then when i went back to the 9's, 40's, and 45's in the winter indoor's i relized all the practice really helped, and my technique vastly improved.
i bought the MOE to practice with, have a lot of FUN with for a cheap price, and hopefully my skill's would improve when i switched over to the AR. i kept the price for the scope, bipod, rings, and grip under $150 because i built the AR to use as a defensive weapon, and that's where i sunk all the $$$$.
i also use caldwell 5.5" orange peel target's @100yds (midwayusa) because when hit the hole turn's green and it's really easy to see through the scope. the scope is perfect for 100 yds, and that's as far as the outdoor range goes to. any farther out i couldn't say.

Any picatinny ring. I would recommend a 1 piece mount - gets kinda fiddly having to line up the front and back rings separately.

I bought a 3-9x32 Barska 22 plinker scope for mine. $38 bucks at big 5. For the money spent I could not be happier with the scope, it works great and has good adjustability.

I like the NC Star Mark III coz you can go CQB and long range without switching scope.

I have a cheap-*** Barska 3-9x42 on a quick detach NCstar mount on my M&P15T - for $60, its great! If it works on the big bro, it'll work well on the 15-22 - chances are I will probably end up putting it on it when/if I get something better for the 15T....or maybe I'll just buy another one!

The usefulness of an optic is in the eye of the beholder. The Simmons and NcStar are really two different types of scopes... here are my two cents (opinions will vary widely)

For making those 200+yd shots the Simmons 6-20x will be best suited. And if you go boating the Simmons will double as a boat anchor at a whopping 22 ounces + mounting hardware, and it's length would serve well as a tomato stake. That said, weight and profile probably isn't much of a factor for those who chose such a scope because most of their shooting is likely supported. Supported, high power optics are great for shooting at stationary targets from short to long distances. Unsupported at short distances or non stationary targets high power optics aren't too useful due to low field of view... you'll spend all day just trying to find the target. The Simmons has very clear and bright glass for $100 on sale. Probably one of the best deals out there for this type of scope/price.

3-9x scopes... there are a gazillion choices... but what the NcStar has going for it is tacticool compactness. It's style fits the rifle. Tacticool gagetry of an illuminated reticle and attached red dot are fun and useful too. Some folks have reported the height of the built in scope mount is too low to use comfortably. Some have had difficulty with the red dot hardware and sighting. The NcStar is also pretty hefty compared to just a simple 3-9x rimfire optic.

I use my 15-22 to shoot short distances at stuff that moves around... soda cans, rocks, twigs... whatever. A small and light red dot works well for that.

I could not pas up getting a BSA Sweet 22 scope for $40.00. I ordered it from SWFA.com.

I really did not expect much for the cost. Figured at worst, I would use it as a target. I knew I would not be out much money so I got it.

I am surprised at the scope for the cost. It comes with aluminum threaded lens covers, (3) turrets for different grain bullets, 3-9X40, has a good feel, to me, clear optics, looks good.

I took it to work for a guy who just bought a Marlin 795. He likes it too. He is going to order one for his rifle.

BSA 3-9x40 Sweet 22 Riflescope

I do like the NCstar 3-9 tactical with the holo sight. I was looking at that for my soon to be M&P 15-22. Only 2 more weeks in gun jail.

No I don't. I'm planning of getting it myself due to me always wanting to shoot 75 yards and wife likes to shoot 25 I use a knock off eotech holo sight and I keep zeroing it for my wife whenever she use 15-22.

The NC Star will be cool coz I can have the holo sight zero in 25 yrds and the scope to 75

i'll probably get chased out of this thead but i can't help but recommend some actual high quality items here. I know, I know, nobody wants to spend money on these scopes. Well heres the link anyway, a comparison of 5 of the most popular 3-9x riflescopes out there under $200. I'd highly recommend anything by vortex.

"Inexpensive Scope" Comparison

heres my 6.5-20x44 vortex viper, a bit overkill but i wanted to also use it as a spotting scope. was once $500 just over a year ago, I got it clearanced for $250. I dont believe they are available anymore at that price, but its worth a shot searching.

I'd look seriously at the Mueller Eraticato. It's 8.5-25x50, and yuo can see .22 holes on the paper at 100 yards with it. If you want to spend less, try the Mueller APT ($150). It's 4.5-15x40 you MIGHT be able to see the holes at 100 yards.

The benefit is that both scopes have target turrets which are much easier to turn than the standard turrets.

I also highly recommend the Burris PEPR scope mount. You can find it for $65 if you do a google search on it.

Don't buy a scope for your rifle to double as a spotting scope... that's usually not a very good trade in quality if you set a price point then try to get "maximum" magnification available at that price point. Even a cheap pair of binoculars will probably serve you better for spotting. Even a few packs of Shoot-N-C stick-on target patches would be a decent alternative to an overpowered, but cheap, optic.

That said, 10-14x magnification should be enough to pick out .22 holes on paper at 100yds if you are not looking at holes on a black target. I found that using an orange-printed sighting-in grid target, I could easily pick out the holes at 100yds with a Mueller APT 4.5-14x40AO. It's a pretty nice setup for only $150 or so.

I totally agree with everything you say! However quality of scope has alot to do with capability. for example the Vortex Viper line is of very high quality and it's 20x is capable of well over 1000 yards which i'll vouch for myself. Now can you get that same performance out of any cheap scope with a 25x or 30x max range? nope! This magnification range is very common among target shooters. 2-7x, 3-9x and even lower are generally just for hunting purposes. Know the intended purposes of what you're buying. People really need to keep glass quality in mind when looking at scopes. With that in mind, here is a commonly accepted list of the best scopes (top to bottom, 2010 not released)

Leica ER, Swarovski Z6, Zeiss Victory

Bushnell Elite 4200, Leupold VX-3, Nikon Monarch & Monarch X, Zeiss Conquest

Leupold Mark 4 VX III & VX-L, Meopta, Nikon Monarch Gold & Titanium, Sightron SIII & S2 Big Sky, Vortex Viper

Bushnell Elite 3200, Leupold VX-II, Millet Tactical/Buck Gold, Nikko Stirling, Nikon Buckmaster, Sightron SI & SII, Vortex Crossfire & Diamondback, Super Sniper Fixed

Here's one you might like..........the BSA Sweet 22. It doesn't come with rings so, you'll have to purchase those separately but, it does have an adjustable objective lens and easy to adjust turrets. That, and it's on sale right now at Sportsmans Guide.

BSA Sweet .22 3-9x40mm Rifle Scope, Matte Black - 178951, Rifle Scopes and Accessories at Sportsman's Guide

My mate has a NC star mk111 on his sig522 I have used it quite a bit. It's quite a nice scope. Reticle is a little thick. And the red dot is on top is not very good. But it looks cool as well if that's any help

This is an AR veriant. So how many ARs have high powered scopes?
Imo, the rifle is light and is ment to be that way.
I have a trs25 but swap to a bushnell 3-9x ultralight rimfire scope with a areo presision single mount.
Super light combo and best of both worlds 3-9x.
Its not a bolt action CZ!!!!! No need for a high powered scope!

A few years back I picked up a Pursuit .22lr scope from Bass Pro. It's been a great scope, seems to hold 0, and goes 3-9 magnification. It gives me more distance then the .22 would ever need, but it works and didn't kill my plinker budget. I think it might have been like $50.

I'm not sure what you're looking for but it's a place to start!

Default S&W MP15-22

I put my Bushnell AR223 1-4x24 on this rifle and went out and got a red dot for my AR15. The scope is fine for my plinking. I'm using a Rock river Arms 30 mil riser mount for the Bushnell.

I have the Nikon 2-7x32 Rimfire scope. I think it is the best of both worlds for this rifle... light, good optics, wide FOV at 2X, and should be more than adequate to 100 yards at 7X. Amazon price was right too. I can place 25 rounds inside 2" at 50 yards, itching to try 100 after this next bout of wet California weather.

a good 3-9x40 scope is ok
22LR at 100 yards yes with a good scope drops about 4-5 inches, at 200 yards forget about it the drop would be a LOT, like about a foot or more or less and no drop down power
would like lobbing a foot ball from 1 goal post to the other
somebody correct me if I am wrong

for a 40 grain 1200 fps 22lr bullet that 100 yard drop is about right for a scope zeroed at 50 yards. I think at 200 the drop would be 19-20 inches. With a subsonic round maybe twice that.
