I ordered and just got my 4 15rd Mags for my M&P 15-22(I am in NJ so thats all I can have in a mag)

It ought to be interesting to see what happens if we ever get stopped by LEO and questioned about the mag having 25 round molded on it even though they are permanently pinned for 15 or 10 rounds.

I have the NJ Compliant one and it came with the same 25 rd mag...but it was pinned at 10

Yankees31, I think S&W ships all compliant models (NJ, NY, CA) with the blue follower 10 round mag, no load assist button. The 10 round mags I bought from S&W have 10 round molded into the body of the mag. I'm assuming that you mean your NJ compliant rifle came with a single blue follower mag that is the same length as the orange follower 25 round mag. S&W didn't supply you with an orange follower 25 round mag that was pinned at 10 with your rifle did they?

No they didnt. I thought you were referring to the legnth of the mag. So you think that these mags are illegal in NJ? They are pinned at 15rds

No, I think they are legal, just like I think they are legal in CA or I wouldn't have bought a couple from rrages. They are permanently pinned, and I don't think rrages would go to the effort to make them for our gun-challenged States unless they had made sure they were legal. I was just commenting on what it would be like to explain to an LEO that a mag marked 25 rounds is actually only 10. My take would be that I would just demonstrate the fact that they only take 10 and explain the situation. I don't think there would be a problem.

Easy just give him the mag and 11 bullets. he can see for himself you cant get more than 10 in. If not, its all good. Thats how it works every now and then when the game warden comes by when I'm duck, dove, or quail hunting. They take my shotgun and make sure no more than 3 shells fit.

Fact is, LEO probably wouldn't even notice 25 round molded into the mag. They would just see a long mag, the red flag would go up in their head, and they would question if more than 10 rounds (15 in NJ) fit in it. Like Scuds said, just give them 11 rounds and let them have have at it. Yankees31, I think we have pretty well put this issue to bed. At least until I come back from my next shooting trip and tell the story of how the BLM officers made me prove they are 10 round mags. Cheers.

Has anyone ever been hassled about **** like this? I mean when you weren't otherwise acting like an Alfa Hotel? Even New Jersey cops have more on their plates than this nonsense.

Chuck, I haven't been hassled, but have been at the same place at the same time as Fish & Game and BLM. They politely inquired about capacity (shotgun, Mini 14, Sig), chit chatted for a few minutes, and then went on their way. Total was less than a half dozen times over 40 years. I think the paranoia is over the extremely small, but real, possibility of getting a gun confiscated over a technicality.

I've had a few routine run-ins with game wardens during hunting season. Usually they only check that you have proper licensing/permission to be hunting on the land that you are on and only once have I been instructed to feed shells into my shotgun to make sure it could only hold 3.

Dunno if anyone here knows, but do you think it would be fine to pin a 25rd yourself with a screw or something? Just wondering if that would be considered permanent or not.

I live in CA and have the 10rd long mags, but really wanna unpin them to install a load assist, and then repin. I know that technically it would be illegal to modify it in the first place, but let's set that aside for now.

If I was checked and had a long mag pinned with a screw from the exterior, you think that'd be ok?

You need to check with the State Police in California. No one here can say what they do or do not consider legal. Personally, anything that can be easily removed, such as a screw, is not permanent.

Just buy 10 round magazines and be done with it.

I use a golf tee for my load assists. They give me better purchase than the standard load assist.

Of course, mine are unpinned because I live in a large cap mag friendly state..

Yea I was just wondering as the 'permanently' blocked mags are still incredibly easy to unblock and as such the term 'permanent' seems largely up for interpretation. Plus i wasn't really asking for definitive legal advice, more for opinions and maybe if anyone else has mags pinned in similar ways.

How are those 15rounders pinned? Is it just a drilled hole right through with a metal bar pushed through?

To be honest I think the police have the same issues with not really knowing what should be considered permanent and I'm sure it's mostly down to the judgement and mood of the particular officer you're dealing with.

It's ok though, That site sells the modified 25rd mags so they have the load assist on them. I really don't want to buy many of the 10rd shorties, maybe a couple for bench shooting (which I don't usually do). I'd like to have the load assist, with the option of unblocking them if I ever leave the state (which hopefully one day I will), or if SHTF. Plus they cost the same as the long mags, if not more given the apparent recent 'shortage' of the short mags.

A golf tee is a good idea though. I use this long plastic rod which is kinda awkward to maneuver.

Think usually the LEO are called in for a family disturbance due to many bills and drinking. They then search for firearms and start hauling M out. Later comes the fireworks.

I live in NJ as well. you will not be hassled. I bought 4 Hexmags 15/30 for my S&W AR-15 and the mags are pinned and do not come apart. I have many friends that are LEO's and they tell me as long as you can't alter the mags you are ok.

Yes, but I figured there may be people still paying ~$25 for a 15-22 magazine without realizing you can get them for about half that.
