Picked up 400/$16.99 Fed American Eagle 38grain copper plated at Sportsman today. Never tried it before... Anyone here use it?

I guess I got lucky for a change. I just picked up my 15-22 on Friday Serial # DVA**** and took it out today. It ate everything I had with 0 failures .The Winchesters are by far the dirtiest but I bought ton of them back when they were only $12.00/brick.

150 Remington GB's

50 Winchester XPert HV's

50 Federal 550's

CCI AR Tactical 22s have proved to be a winner with me. I just got in from putting them through the 15-22 and my Clark Custom 10-22. The 15-22, using open sights at 25 yards, shot the smallest group with Tacticals. Others ammo used was CCI 36 gr Mini Mags, CCI Green Tag, and Federal 550 bulk pak. The Mini mag and Geen Tag shot very similar groups and the Federal was all over the place.The Clark shot all the CCI stuff into small almost identical groups, with the Tactical edging out Green Tag for smallest. I have a 3-9x Leupold EFR on it and I used 6x to do the tests. I don't currently have a scope to put on the 15-22 but I have shot it with a scope and groups shrink considerably (duh!). And when I did have the scope on it, Green tags grouped the best. But with the results I have from the Clark, I think I'll be loading up on the AR Tactical ammo. If I get a chance later , I'll post pics of targets.

I've shot a few thousand rounds of the AE. Seemed to be similar to the Federal 550 bulk stuff. No problems with them, but I haven't figured out a good use for all those little 40 round plastic retainer things

I'm a little interested in trying the new CCI "tactical" stuff... I pass Cabelas on my daily office commute, so maybe I'll grab some this week

Thanks great to know, what i was looking for. Guess the lower velocities are actually helping with accuracy. Green tag is priced at $18 at gander mtn, what a joke! I can get the whole box of tactical for that price.

What is the velocity on those?

I use Winchester Dynapoint GT's hollow points from Dicks that I think migh be the same. They have "Super X" case stamps, and are 1150fps w/ 40 grain hollow point.

For me they shoot fantastically, consistent and less issues then the Federals I was using.

So far only the 375 pack at cabelas, next year it should be more widely available. Sounds gimmicky but I know CCI specifically tested it using our 15-22s, and to address feeding issues. I can only assume then it was also engineered with 15-22s. so think of it as a custom ammo for our guns

As listed on the S&W website (and mentioned elsewhere), the 15-22 is a 1:15" twist rate.

I've mostly been using CCI Mini-Mag 40gr round nose so far in my new-ish 15-22 (DUR-series) without any notable issues. From what I've learned about the CCI ammo, it is definitely just a copper wash/plating (not a jacket)... and there is most definitely some sort of wax or other plastic-like sealant coating on the bullets, which you will notice if you handle the bullets while loading and get the residue on your warm fingers. Anyone know exactly what they use as their sealing material?

Once I'm happy things are going well, I will probably try to switch to Federal Champion 36gr HP rounds since they are half the cost of the CCI Mini-Mag rounds.

From everything I've seen, I have little inclination to run non-copper plated ammo through the 15-22.

People who have been running CCI Stingers in your 15-22, are you sure it's not putting undue wear/tear on your internals? Even the built-like-a-tank Ruger Mk III pistol users warn us not to run HV ammo through the pistol as a routine due to the increased stress it places on all the mechanicals as it slams the bolt and stuff around. HV rounds are more reliable when put through a revolver and such, I believe.

I had 2 375 bulk packs come in from Cabela's yesterday. Package was trashed and all the ammo was out of the boxes. E-mailed Cabelas and they are replacing them, said it would take 2-3 weeks. Not happy about the wait, but at least they are doing the right thing and replacing it.

Good that they are making good on fixing your order. Probably the shipper is more to blame than Cabela's though. Did you get to keep the "trashed" ammo?

Do report back and let us know how the "Tactical" CCI rounds work out for you! If they are worthwhile, I might have to order up a huge load prior to the Feb 2011 ****** ammo law going into effect in Kalifornia.

I wouldn't worry about it in the slightest. Sure Stingers are a bit quicker, but they are by no means a real "hot" load.

I have seen other firearms with warnings about HV ammunition, but I have never heard of it being a problem in the slightest. In fact they are probably far and away the best ammunition to use since they tend to be the better ammunition (along with Aquila Interceptors and my favorite: CCI Velocitors).

In a nutshell, starting in Feb 2011 "handgun ammo" (by various vague definitions) will be restricted to "face-to-face" type transactions only, requiring both ID and a thumbprint at time of sale. This will basically disallow all mail and internet sales of certain ammo shipped into California.

There is still lots of confusion if it will apply to .22LR since it is used in both pistols and rifles... and there is some confusion over if the law will be somehow twisted into affecting rifle ammo in popular calibers as well.

For obvious reasons, many many people are working to find ways to prevent this from going into effect in Feb 2011, but nobody knows how it will play out.

It wouldn't hurt to have a decent stockpile of your favorite ammo in advance, regardless... Attached is what ~17,000 rounds of .22LR looks like....

In summary:

I may have kept a round or two of the shipped ammo .
They shipped 2 small boxes in one big box and the ammo had way too much room to tumble around.

About a month ago I ordered a trueglo from Dicks on sale. Same thing happened, looked like they ran the box over with a truck a few times and even the scope was broken.

I put the blame on UPS for both shipments.
I've ordered ammo from Cabelas before without any problems.

NJ has something similiar. For handgun ammo, you need to show your firearms ID card. Most of the big stores like Dicks also require to see your ID card even with the 22LR, but the smaller shops don't bust your chops over it.

I pay for everything with plastic, pay in full every month and get rewards for using the cards. All credit card companies want you to carry a balance so they make money. Not saying I've never paid a late fee, its happened when I get lazy and wait to pay the bills in one sitting instead of the day they come in.

Noticed Cabela's had a sale on Federal bulk 525, $69 4 boxes and a dry box. Normally $89..

now in that case the drybox actually comes out as free... unlike when they usually try to pretend it does.

I wish they were closer than 3 hours away so I could just go to the store.

Picked up a 500 box of Federal Lightening at Walmart. 40gr lead round nose 1240fps. It ain't bulk pack... 10 separate boxes & plastic holders. Don't remember seeing this before. Anyone tried it? Only $14.70/500 !!!

Yes, I've tried it and I like it! It performed the same as the Fed Champion bulk packs in my 15-22, ie. a few ejection failures in the box, but nothing I can't live with. Works well in my S&W 22A. Just wish I could find it more often in my area, it's hit or miss.

Took my brand new 15-22 MOE out to the range today and managed to squeeze out 100 rounds of this:



and it was 100%! Very happy with today The shop was out of CCI minimags and I was planning on just getting 100 rounds but these were on sale for $18 so why not? haha

So any updated news/results on the CCI "tactical" ammo? It seems only Cabela's carries it, so that carries a small price premium over other vendors who sell CCI Mini-Mag for slightly less. Cabela's prices out the CCI "tactical" at $99.99 for 4x375 boxes = 1500 rounds (with a dry box), making it about $6.67 per 100. This puts it on par with most places that sell 40gr Mini-Mag for around $6 per 100 (or less).

Has anyone done a side-by-side ammo comparison between the Tactical rounds and regular 40gr solid Mini-Mag? It almost looks to me like the Tactical in the 375 round loose boxes is kinda like "bulk" 40gr Mini-Mag of sorts (no cool little plastic trays). I saw some earlier posts testing the Tactical vs. the 36gr HP Mini-Mag, but the HP and lighter weight (faster muzzle velocity) might affect things a tiny bit. I can't tell if the Tactical load has a slightly lower muzzle velocity by design than 40gr Mini-Mag (1200 vs 1235 fps?)

edit: Did some internet archaeology and found some interesting tidbits. It's odd that CCI doesn't mention this product at all on their website that I could find. Anyhow... some TV segments with CCI product people say this "Tactical" round is a copper plated, "truncated" round nose, standard velocity load. It seems there was some sort of engineering done on the nose geometry to fix feeding problems people were having in .22LR conversions on their full-size AR rifles and some of our favorite dedicated .22lr tacti-cool platforms as well. I have to wonder why they went to a standard velocity load though -- must be fine tuning for the new nose shape. Here's a snippet attributed to a CCI rep:

Maybe if I can get a nice deal on a shipment of these from Cabela's I'll park it next to my stash of 40gr Mini-Mag and see how it goes.

I have a pair of MP 15-22's- an original, plain barrel gun and an MOE version.

I have run probably 7000 rounds through the plain barrel gun and maybe 3,000 through the newer, MOE.

The best overall load for me for function has been the Federal 510 40 grain load- Champions from Walmart. $1.47/50. The next best has been the Federal Bulk pack, 550 from Walmart- I have a few jams with it that I attribute mainly to inconsistent powder amounts and not fully cycling the gun but on average it's very good.

I have some Aguila that I bought from CMP that I need to try but it looks promising based on my use in other rifles.

Neither gun will feed the Winchester 333/555 load very well which is a shame because it has been VERY accurate in both guns.

I could not get Remington Golden bullets to run very well in either gun so I don't use them.

I have used some CCI Blazer and also the Mini Mags. Both are excellent but the Blazers are hard to come buy locally and the Mini Mags are expensive for just blasting so I don't shoot alot of them.

Will Aguila "no powder" work through these guns? I know it probably won't cycle the next round through but it would be nice to be able to plink without my neighbor thinking that I'm hunting on his dang property.

That would be a great solution for myself as well. I don't think my immediate neighbors appreciate the times I've gone plinking in the back of my lot. However, the description specifically states not for use in long-barreled guns. I'd be curious to hear if someone has attempted to fire them from a 15-22 though.

The super colibri will not cycle in my 15-22. Tried it just to see if it would work.

Hey brotha I'm in Upstate NY too just north of you. I know it's a pain but I wouldn't mind manually cycling the next round in if it lets me to shoot out back. I have some pumpkins that need taking care of, lol.

I don't think the cycling is the main issue. The description says that they might not clear the barrel and firing a second round would cause major damage. After looking through a bunch of feedback on these rounds, it sounds like a LOT of people have no problems firing them through their rifles. Although I didn't see anything regarding the 15-22 specifically. I might have to be a guinea pig and pick up a box. Quieter than an airgun they say!

i think you will need a suppressor to get that affect.

Last night the 2 replacement boxes of the AR Tactical came from Cabelas as a replacement for the first 2 boxes that came open and spilled all over the place. One of the boxes was again broken open and rounds were again loose in the box. I'm not going to bother to contact Cabelas and complain a second time, I'll just have to make a trip out there and buy a lot in bulk. I tried to test them out at the range this past Saturday, but there were too many people waiting to sight in their muzzle loaders, so I left without shooting.

Got a Cabelas flyer in the mail today, shows the Tactical rounds will be on sale for $17.99 a box Dec 9-15.

Is that in store only?

I paid $19.99 a box plus shipping. 2 boxes + shipping was around $48.

I'm sure most people who own, or are getting the S&W M&P 15-22 Performance Center Model know that they CAN'T, I repeat CAN'T use CCI Stingers due to having tighter/match chambers.

I love the Stingers in my Walther P22, they POP louder than even Mini Mags (which I shoot religiously in my P22...except for when I wanna hear that POP and go for Stingers).

I've still yet to try them in my MOE, but after reading about the 36 grainers bein more accurate, I may just go for some CCI HP 36's, but I'm definitely gettin in on that Cabelas sale for the tacticals!!

Couldn't sleep last night, so at around 1 AM, I placed the order at Cabelas for 4 boxes of the AR, and a dry box. Without the dry box I could have bought 5 boxes for the same price, but I did need another dry box. Hope all 4 boxes come intact this time.
