Default New M&P15-22, few questions about the serial

Hey everyone. Purchased a 15-22 today. Went to the gunstore to pass some time saw a colt ar 22, ruger sr22, and the S&W, held them all and fell in love the 15-22. Bought it on impulse! Anyways, after reading around a bit i noticed some seem to have issues with OOB, FTF, FTE, and most say it's from the ammunition. However, i got a bit lost in the serial number thread that is stickied. My serial number is a DTU. What should I look for to see if my guns has the upgrades. And if it doesn't should I send it in? Thanks!

Look for blue springs. If you separate the upper from the lower, the lower should have a blu-ish spring on the trigger (visible by just looking, not disassembly required). In the upper, there is a bolt spring that should also be blue. There are some others changes but those are the easiest to spot. But no matter what, just shoot the gun and see how it performs. There are people with older serial numbers that have had their guns work fine.

Im pretty sure the first run of rifles didnt have the blue springs until the DTX serials came along. Being this one is a DTU, I dont think it would have them. But I may be wrong.

Most people don't have any issues with their guns, even older ones. There's nothing to be nervous about. FTEs and FTFs are a fact of life with all guns so don't worry about those. If you're concerned about OOB issues, don't do rapid fire and make sure the bolt is all the way forward between shots. If you don't have any problems for your first session then you probably don't have to worry. If you have a lot of FTEs or FTFs (e.g. more than one per magazine) then you should send it in and they will update everything for you.

Not saying you dont know what your talking about.. not in the slightest.. so please dont take it as such. With that being said. The statement above couldnt be further from the truth. Now not saying every old serial number rifle will have issues, not saying that at all. Im just saying that if it dont happen at the start, dont think that the odds are that its not going to happen, as with the older rifles it "can" happen at any time.. but that doesnt mean it will happen. It "can" happen to the newer ones to, not as likely with the updates, but it still could happen to any of us. Any way, I meet this guy at my local gun range that also owns a 15 22. (Met him when I first got my 15 22 back in mid July) He has a DT serial M&P 15 22. We have since became shooting buddies, and share alot of range time with various weapons. Any way he has fired a over 5 thousand rounds through his 15 22 with just the occasional FTE, FTF etc.

Well this past labor day weekend we were on mountain top firing off at cans, targets, those spinning plinking targets, etc etc. Just overal having a good time. When suddenly his gun started having a MASSIVE amount of FTE's. We broke it down, and his ejector .. yep you guessed it.. was missing.
Untill this happened he really hadnt had any major issues with the rifle at all in any form. No OOB's and as I said just the rare and occasional FTE or FTF. He kept the gun cleaned, lubed, magzines loaded properly and without the use of the load assist button( to be sure they are 100% staggered correctly)He has since contacted S&W, got his shipping label and has shipped his 15 22 back to them.

If you feel that way you might consider contacting S&W CS and tell them you don't feel comfortable shooting the rifle and why. My guess is that they'll send you a return shipping label and update the rifle to latest specs.

No, you're absolutely right, just because it doesn't happen in the first sessions doesn't mean anything. My point was just that the chances of your gun blowing up in your face is low and taking some basic precautions could at least ease his nervousness. After all, he bought the gun to enjoy, not to be too nervous to use. But yes, hope for the best, plan for the worst... eternal vigilence... and other cliches.

I just traded a CZ-452 for a NIB 15-22 (DUAxxxx), and it has blue springs. The original owner bought it back in March and had never fired it...

I 100% agree on the "enjoy" part. And jsimmons congrats brother! And if worst comes to worst.. it has a lifetime warranty for the original owners.

I have been reading these 15-22 threads since this rifle became available and because of them haven't purchased one, and I have been tempted, sorely tempted.
I just can't past the idea of a $500.00 rifle with a limited "shelf life", meaning at some point as Down Range points out it may go south. It very well may be the nature of .22 cal semiautos, but I look at all of them and see everything on the market as a money pit. Look at them Ruger 10/22s, shooters tend to change out everything except the receiver, and sometimes even the receiver, where the $200.00 rifle becomes an $800.00+ rifle.
I'm a big Smith fan, I have 6 revolvers and one pistol and they are solid. I got to pass on the 15-22 right now.
Meanwhile we're shooting Marlin 795s, a $125.00 plastic rifle with $70 tech sights and so far (4500 rounds) nothing major to report, though talk about cheeseball mechanicals...plastic trigger guard, springs that look like they were taken out of a ball point retractable pen and a stock that wasn't designed to fit adult males, women or children. They do have good accuracy however, with a sling in prone we get 5 shot groups under an inch at 25 yards and this is the only reason I put up with them. They ain't pretty. And I'm not suggesting them as as alternative to the 15-22.

All good points. Unless someone wants an AR platform as a trainer or wants lots of rail space for accessories, or just likes the looks of the rifle..... there are lots of .22 to chose from that are less expensive, reliable and accurate. Though, the 15-22 seems to dominate the market in fun factor
