Default Best Rifle Case???

Hello,

Been shooting the 15-22 a lot lately and I've only got 2 complaints. First, this thing eats ammo so well that I'm gonna go broke trying to keep it fed. I just burned a 525 bulk pack today in less than an hour, and that puts the total somewhere north of 5,000 by my estimate.

Second, and the point of this thread, I find none of my current cases fit this rifle with optics/riser and fore-grip attached. So, I'm wondering what everyone's favorite type of case for these tacticool .22's might be. I like my hard case, but I seem to think one of the soft sided tactical cases is the way I want to go, like this MidwayUSA Pro Series Tactical Rifle Gun Case - MidwayUSA

Thanks, James

That style of case works well. I have a cheap one for my 15-22 with a MOLLE panel on one side with some larger pouches handy for mags, ammo, and whatever isn't currently on the rails.

Thumbs up

I just invested $160 into an SKB hardcase, it is their brand new 3i series. I would still consider it a steal as retail is over $200, and it is hard finding it any cheaper (with foam included. 5B-L contain foam, 5B-E are empty. Be cautious with sellers and verify your model includes foam if the price is "too nice".) Mine will arrive tuesday and i will try to get a review up then. I went with the more expensive choice for many reasons;

1. I will have it forever, even if it isn't storing my 15-22, it will be storing some combination of weapons/accessories for a long long time.
2. The thing is water proof and crush-proof, how much more can you ask for? also mil-spec which explains the afformentioned qualities.
3. It's just damn sexy! compared to some of the older pelican or storm cases, they really 'cleaned up' the design and look on this new line.
4. Added security and peace of mind with built in locks, along with additional padlocking ability. In my search for a cheap hardcase, it was rare to find on any case under $100. 5. Lifetime warranty and all replacement parts are shipped out directly at no cost for parts or shipping.

Heres a great reference chart for multiple brands.
Pelican Hardigg Storm Comparison Chart :: Coachella Trading Company

I'd go with the 42x14 size which was what i ended up choosing, so it was between the Pelican 7200, Storm iM3200, and SKB 3i-4214-5. SKB was also the cheapest and best looking imo, no brainer.

All of these cases come with the "layered" foam which can be cut out to customize your own fit.. and further instructions on doing that can be found here. Another reason for going with these cases. As you can see, you will be able to fit pretty much any accessory in there snug and secure.
Cutting Gun Case Foam (lots of photos) - AR15.COM

Now if you meant this to be about softcases only, sorry for going off on a tangent, but you did ask for BEST, so thats where i'm coming from. I spent about 80 hours researching my decision before purchase, so hopefully this will help out someone else with not-so-much-time on their hands. I'm a college student so i don't exactly have money to waste either, as this price range is alot, but look at all the features and benefits you get with these cases... well worth it.

This is the one I have. It's big enough for two ARs without optics, so I'm fairly confident it'll be roomy enough for yours complete with optics and fore-grip. Also, it has pouches for 6 mags.

I have the short Allen case, and everything barely fits wih scope, fore grip/bipod. Stock has to be completely in - no sling adapters for me!

If I had it to do over, I would go with the next size bigger.

Thanks for the replies. There are quite a few more options out there than I originally realized. Reaper, that is definitely a nice case and I will keep it in mind for a future purchase.

Does anyone have experience with the Plano 1512?

I am interested in it because it will hold my scoped rifle and shotgun in a side by side case.

the $10 plano pistol case i saw at walmart looked decent, but it was only one layer of foam on each side making it not cuttable, i also don't think they have built in locks or holes for padlocks. a decent cheap alternative, having said that i don't have any experience with that one.

Grim, I like that SKB case. Just found it online for $150 online. Looks like a perfect case for this gun.

I got lucky in this aspect. My wife is a Doctor, and has access to ALL the medical therapy foam she wants. So, guess what ALL my cases are lined with lol. Im talking that expensive stuff that the memory foam, medicare approved, long term therapy beds are made of lol. Both my wife's and my gun cases are top notch when it comes to the padding. Lol, got this great padding in the 50 dollar cases for some rifles lol.

Make sure it has foam, cheapest I found was 160; one was on amazon the other on eBay. Both were the after shipping cost price (both free)

Every gun show I've ever been to has a vendor with hundreds of inexpensive rifle cases. I sure can't justify the expense of even a $50 case for a $400 plinker! Like many other products you're paying for the label on some of these.

yeah the 150 was without foam. But that link you posted about cutting foam had a link to where to buy good foam. If I go that route I'd do that. But as chuck said, I'm having a hard time justifying $200 for a case for my plinkers. I don't need a crush proof, water proof case. We'll see though. Its a great case.

no experience with that plano, but I've got a hard side Doskocil for a single rifle that is my main transport case (and the 15-22 is the only rifle I have that doesn't fit unless I break it down). I have heard something about plano making a case on par with the Pelican brand for around $100-$125, but haven't seen any reviews yet. Anybody here know anything about it????

found this, closest thing so far to what was described: http://www.copsplus.com/prodnum8988.php

Anybody use Bulldog cases? They seem like they are more of what I'm looking for. Hard case with foam but for much cheaper. Just want something of decent quality that I can custom cut.

Best rifle case is one that is designed to fit your needs.

For me, I only use rifle cases to go to the range which is just across the road so I don't need much. I use a cheapo ($20+/-) Uncle Mikes for the 15-22. If I was going to be out in the woods four wheeling and in weather then an Uncle Mikes wouldn't cut it. Some rifle cases advertise additional pockets and storage compartments... but that's what I use range bags for.

Gander mountain has a nice hard aluminum case, I paid 70 for it, gun barely fits diagonally, but should have enough room for optics and some accessories with the stock collapsed. no extra pockets tho, but its nice because its not super long and ridiculous. I dont have pics of the case closed, but here is what it looks like opened if your interested. (clickable thumbnails)

We started with a $400-$500 plinker, but alot of us are flirting with quadruple digits when you include accessories.

Well its funny I read this thread today. I went to my parents house to modify my stock today and found that dad had a 42" Pelican 1700 case sitting in the workshop! Sure its older but is in great condition with never before cut foam inside!

Jackpot! Take it and run

also fyi, pelican charges upwards of $50 for replacement foam, so if you plan to cut it make sure to measure three times, cut once!

Well I plan to just grab regular foam from the online supplier I found if I screw it up. Gonna spend a lot of time planning and cutting.

I use a Bulldog case for my 15-22 I got from my local gun shop for around $40. It works great and I tend to agree with Phil that I buy something appropriate to the gun.

I have two Pelican cases that I use for transporting and storing my AR-15 and MSAR Bullpup. The cost of those guns and the real accessories on them make it much easier to spend $200 on a case, especially when they are getting knocked around heading to competitions and the range.

turns out the plano 1404 is one of the best deals out there, Walmart for only $10!! It has three layers of foam, one layer with the pick-and-pluck and the other two are eggshell style. Also lockable. I bought it as temporary storage until I can get my foam cut in the 3i case, but now I think i'm just gonna carry both cases to the range and keep the accessories in the plano.

^The latches can be replaced with TSA locks, which I need to buy seperate. Wish i would of known that in advance, otherwise I'm extremely pleased with it.

I've got the same plano case that I use for taking pistols to the range (holds 8 with creative packing methods). Anyone have experience with the all weather series. Looks like a nice case for around a c-note.

Contradicting reviews here Amazon.com: Plano 108360 Gun Guard AW Tactical Case 36": Sports & Outdoors
If i were spending $100 i'd prolly go with the big boys, or maybe search craigslist used if ~$150+ is really pushing the budget. I found a couple for $120ish in my area.

Here is what I use. I don't like for people to know what I'm carrying. I found this in a pawn shop for 10.00. Soft, padding, and has shoulder straps. Fits perfectly.

I definitely like the idea, but I only use my cases for to and from the range so everyone already knows what I'm carrying. Gachrid, I like the setup and may have to copy your ideas there as I have a gsg as well to house. Question though, where'd you get your mags for it? My LGS can't seem to locate any for me and 10 at a time is just too slow (and no mag change, panic drill, etc. practice).

I love the Pelican cases. You can really organize it like you want it.

I just don't have the funds for such right now.

I did make a recent Midway order. Picked up some cool goods for my 11yr olds Christmas list...he's getting a 15-22 this year. Oh yeah....his old man is getting one, too.

Anyway my first Miday large range bag for pistols has served me very, very well over the years. They have them on sale for $39.00 right now in both black and olive drab. I went ahead and added one of these. It' will help hold more pistols, ammo, hearing protection, etc.

I also picked up a couple of these rifle bags which are also on sale. Numerous pockets for magazines and other. He's gonna go nuts.

MidwayUSA Tactical Rifle Gun Case with 6 Pockets - MidwayUSA

Now...gotta keep stocking up on ammo.

Want to copy my ideas huh Wolfe? Haha. Aimsurplus is where I picked up my mags for my GSG. Cheapest price as long as they have them in stock. They go quick there because they are about $10 cheaper then anywhere else. Here's the link: GSG .22lr 1911 10rd magazine. But as I just looked they are sold out. I would keep an eye there because they usually are back in stock in a week or so.

I appreciate the link. I had seen AIM had them but was sold out. As for copying your ideas, I am still unsure. Today I saw a case set up for dual ar's and dual M9's (would change to dual 1911s). Figured I could have my practice weapons and my centerfires in the same case (when money permits me to buy the case and a "real" ar). In the meantime, I'm thinking I'll order the midway professional soft case with my next order.

Haha I was just joking around. My rimfires are my "all the time" guns. I'm just a plinker so I don't have anything else. That dual case sounds pretty nice tho. If you plan on wanting to carry everything in one case later I'd go for that too.

WOW, That is one sweet setup. One case for lots of fun. I suppose you have another bag for ammo.
I think I'm going to copy you too.

What shroud is that?
What grip?
Is the orange follower blocked to 10 like the blue one?
It looks like you might be able to fit 2 more 15-22 mags if you're creative. Or a bunch of the short 10 rounders on end.

CAA grip. Brett's custom shrouds. There are actuallty three mags in there. Two 25 and a 10. I have thick enough foam to fit another four or five mags in there underneath.

Anyone try the Cabela's Xtreme Tactical Case? On sale for $50.

Cabela's also has a 3 for $55 deal on magazines. Not a screaming deal, but a bit better than the standard $20 price.

Bulldog Cases Ultra Compact In. AR-15 Discreet Carry Rifle Case 29 In. - Navy Blue. BD475. Bulldog Cases Holsters.)
This is the one i use, if you don't mind breaking down your rifle in 2 piece, which i don't. It's discreet and not to long, and the price was right. As we would say in HI, SHE GO

I'm using this one from 5.11.
Can accommodate 2 if not accessorized, Molle system, foam frame, heavy nylon/material and overall high quality. They have various sized/purposed pouches for the Molle system, outside and inside the smaller center compartment.

Now...gotta keep stocking up on ammo.
I got one of these soft cases just last week. It's a great buy for the current sale price of just $18.99 (good through the end of this month). It's got pretty good reviews too. It might not make sense to purchase by itself with the shipping, but if you're going to place an order anyway...

That's a great case, grim. I'll probably get one down the road. I already have all the foam cutting materials ready to go!

Nice job you did too. The cuts look clean and straight.

thanks, yeah they came out really nicely, the only one thing i didn't have the foresight to avoid was it got a little "hilly" in one spot because i was turning the foam around the wire when i was running out of table room. the better idea would have been to shut off the juice to the wire, re-orient the foam then turn it back on and continue. I also couldn't tell what was happening until after i removed the cut-out, because the top side of the foam stayed straight like normal against my cardboard tracing. It was on the bottom side where the wire got wavy. just try to keep in mind where the wire is contacting on the bottom side too, its hard to know because you can't really see while you're working. its really only noticible with the gun removed, but right above the stock you can see what i mean. I'll probably go back and re-trim it off eventually.

I just picked up one of these here 36 Padded Weapons Case, Military Surplus, Major Surplus at Sportsman's Guide

It is actually a Voodoo Tactical padded rifle case as seen here 36-inch MOLLE Soft Rifle Carrying Case, Padded Weapon Bag with Backpack Straps

As you can see you save about $30 off going through sportsmansguide.com

This case is very nice, it's padded and it is designed to hold one or two of the M-4 carbines with a collapsible stock and a 16 inch barrel.
