Default Quite an experience...

Last week the wife and I finally had the chance to take out our 15-22s to break in. (A DTU and a DTM serial number).

Shot mostly Federals but a mag or two of Remingtons with about the same success. Both would have one or two failure or two per magazine. More of a nuisance than a problem that will probably iron itself out with more usage.

Somewhere around the 250 round count, the DTU did a double tap. I’ve read on some posts that sometimes that’s caused by Remington ammo but I’m not sure what I was shooting at the time. Around 300 rounds I passed the rifle off to my wife to shoot and when she handed it back I squeezed the trigger and three or four rounds went off. (She wanted to know how I could pull the trigger so fast ). I then went to put the safety on and noticed it WAS on safe already. Pointing downrange I pulled the trigger and it was full auto!

It ran through most of that mag then had a feed jam. I removed that mag and tried to duplicate that scenario with two other mags. In Fire mode, no problems….but in Safe mode, more full auto.

I called S&W today and they’re sending out a shipping tag. Mel in Cust Svc said they’d have it turned around within ten days of receipt. Sad to see it go, it was REALLY fun for a few mags.

Wow. This is the second thread I've seen that had the exact same issues. At least by reporting/returning it you're not in any trouble for having a full auto.. defect or not.. still a BIG TIME NO NO! lol

"Sweet" was what my son said when I told him about it...he wanted to come right over to try. This was on our property. We're on 16 acres, but sound does travel out there and there isn't a sound like full auto so I didn't want to press my luck.

Although the CS rep at S&W was very nice, I haven't seen my shipping label yet. I called at noon and he said he'd email it in a few minutes. Guess I'll call tomorrow and see what happened to it.

And that's what was going through my mind. I thought the DTMXXXX would be the one to have a problem of either of them. I also saw that thread you mentioned. That's what made me look at the safety.

It's no joke. Having a weapon you know is faulty and firing full auto is possession of NFA restricted Class III. All it takes is a cop passing by on the road, a concerned neighbor, or whatever to get it up the chain.

The fine is VERY hefty, the jail time is long, and you run the risk of catastrophic failure of the firearm, with personal injury along with it.

The same as the thread about having the barrel shortened. He has the components to assemble the gun with a barrel under 16", so he technically can be charged with intent to break the NFA restrictions on barrel length without purchasing the tax stamp.

It's a long shot to get caught, but the ATF is relentless in tracking down and prosecuting people who skip the law.

I'm sure i'd feel differently if I was in the situation, but alas i am not and my gun functions legally as it should.

Yeah and a few moments of "stupid" will get you a life time of not being able to own any more guns.... You don't mess with the BATFE. Semsora did the right thing.

In this particular case, some of the neighbors are less than happy that this parcel of land was sold. Prior to that, they used it as their 4-wheeler course/playground/pass-thru. It took some discussions and ultimatley 56 6x6 posts to get the message across that this is now MY yard, not theirs.

Keeping that in mind, it wouldn't surprise me that one of them would drop a dime to the local sheriff.

Default Thanks S&W, that was quick

As an update...I sent my 15-22 back using the S&W supplied shipping label last Weds (10/27). Got it back this afternoon (11/5).

I was surprised that the enclosed piece of paper didn't mention what work had been done to it. Is that standard? There was a note typed at the bottom stating that if I had questions regarding the work, to give them a call.

Anyway..GREAT JOB S&W!!

Bought my first 15-22 this past January - going strong. Bought my second (first one went to my son ) this past June. Half way through the fourth 23 round mag the trigger ceased to function. Called Kelley at SW Customer Service. Within a couple of hours the shipping label was here via email; took it to FedEx and in eight days, it was back, functioning perfectly. All the paperwork said was that it was "updated to latest spec". Eight days from initial call to returned weapon. And it came home with an extra mag. As always, SW Customer Service is outstanding.

My new M&P15 VTAC had similar problem...double firing when trigger was pulled then released. S&W replaced entire trigger unit and new trigger was much smoother.

Same turnaround time as yours with piece of paper noting work done.

Got 1,000 rounds through it and no problems.
