Barrel nut wrench
Should I be looking at buying one for my new 15-22 kids?

You might want to ask Belt_Fed how many uppers he's gotten in for barrel end threading, and how very many of those had loose barrel nuts. I won't tell you my biased opinion, Shoo

I am going to say YES you want a barrel nut wrench. Both Randy and Jody both make great barrel nut tools. Trust me, you need one... And I highly recommend barrel vice jaws (Jody offers these) it's a must, because you don't want to find out like I did, that you can indeed, strip the upper receiver by torquing on it!

Thanks for the quick replies!
If I don't intend to work with the flash-hider or do any other mods, will the barrel nut loosen on it's own?
I'm compulsive about buying things "just in case"

BTW Brett, enjoyed your vids.

It could work loose and without the tool you won't have a way to tighten it. You need the right tools for the job!
Thanks

I work on a lot of these rifles and I don't know their round count when I receive them but id say around 1/3 of the rifles I get in have a barrel nut loose enough to cause accur. problems if not feed and function problems... if your going to own one of these rifles id say this is the most important tool you could own.. ask anyone in the sport that fires a lot of rds threw ar15s if they own the tools to strip and clean their rifles and they will all have tools... my 15-22 gets fired on average 10,000 to 200 rounds fired threw my ars so tools are a neccessity.. shooboy offers one if not the best wrench on the market

A shooboy wrench was the first accessory I Purchased. The best made tool I hope to never need.

Help...
I just purchased my 15-22. It's a DVA serial number and we have about 100 rounds thru it.
I just saw this thread on the barrell loosening up and got all
wacked out over it.
I have no idea how to even get to the barrell nut to check it.
From working the serial number I figured it was made around
August 3, 2010.
Do I have to check this barrell tightness or did Smith fix before my rifle came out?
Can someone guide me as to how to even get into the handguard area to use a wrench, if I get one?
Thanks
M

Go to the notable thread index, click on the instructional video link. I have a full length video showing how to remove the barrel from the rifle.

Thanks!
I received the wrench yesterday and before I touched anything I watched your tutorials. Very informative indeed. I made some poor man barrel vice blocks out of a pine 2X4 and removed the flash supressor, then I checked out the tightness of the nut. It was snug and I left it at that. I don't fix things until they are broke.
Thanks for your time, Brett, for making those vids. They will keep me from wrecking my gun.
Regards,
Hobie
