Federal ammo

I was sitting here reading different threads on ammo and had noticed the reviews of Fed bulk ammo and got curious about what was different that would make such a difference. So...harkening (yes I said harkening

)back to my Bullseye days I got out my rim gauge and started sorting out the bulk according to thickness. The range was from 1.75-5.00(the scale on the guage). I then weighed them and the range was 49.1 to 49.6 grains.
I then took my Federal match ammo(711,711b,900b) and the best,900b, was extremely consistent 2.2-2.5 between rounds.
Pretty much the same for 711b, the 711 varied a bit more but was still pretty consistent.
So.... I'm going to sort out 50 rounds batches of the bulk across the scale and see if the accuracy becomes more consistent.
BTW, this isn't based on but a few rounds of each batch and I'll report back what I find out.
Do you know that sorting cartridges is like watching paint dry?

Just got back from the range with my 15-22 and the verdict is in....

The Fed. bulk that I purchased is not so good. Even after sorting it out and shooting 50 of the two batches that were in the middle of measurements and of which there is the most of, ****. 3" groups at 50'???? I even shot 50 rounds out of the box and except for one FTfire, same results.

Enter CCI minimags. One ragged hole at 50'. So...if I want to throw cheap stuff downrange, fed bulk. If I want tight groups, it looks like my rifle likes CCI. However, I'm not done testing and will post future results.

Hey Hobie1, try the Standard Velocity from CCI also. They shoot 1 ragged hole groups outta my Ruger MK II w/Aimpoint, and good groups outta my iron sighted 4" 617. That Federal bulk is a waste of $$ in your case. Life is to short to shoot inaccurate ammo. Thanks for doing the teious research and posting your results......
