gun vise?
looking for a decent gun vise for the 15-22...
searched but couldnt find anything here...
what is everyone using?

basically to hold the rifle while working on it, cleaning it, etc.
not for shooting..

You just need some vise jaws, not a dedicated vise.

I had a homemade vise that I upgraded from to a Tipton. I am very happy with the versatility of the Tipton.

The Tipton is a good long gun vise. The MTM Case-Gard maintenance center is cheaper and is also very handy. If you can find an old Decker, they work too.

+1 for the Tipton. It handles ARs and bolt actions equally well.

The tipton line is great. You can even use some of them as a shooting rest. They just don't have anything that I have seen that clamps the barrel for tightening the barrel nut.
For basically holding the rifle while working on it, cleaning it, etc. they are great.

Does the MTM Gun Vise clamp onto the barrel? If so is it securely enough to remove the barrel nut safely? I'd rather spend my money on something that's not a unitasker like vise jaws.

Here’s a few pictures of the different products, maybe this will help. The maintenance center uses “V” cradles, while the Tipton and Decker have a clamping mechanism. None of these are designed to replace specialized wrenches or fixtures.

Resurrecting this thread!!!
Been looking for a gun vise as mostly a cleaning aid. Seems like most of my friends end up in my gun/reloading area as a hideaway!!! This means there will be 15-22's, MP15's, Remington 870's, 10/22's, and a couple others on the table at various times.
Looking at the Cabelas gun vise ( Cabela's Gun Vise : Cabela's) and see I can get the Tipton ( Tipton Best Gun Vise) online for about $40 more (OK, near double).
I'd rather make the purchase once so I'm looking for opinions of those that may have used both. Also, other options welcome.

I have the Cabela's vise - no experience with the Tipton. I can see that the Tipton has a few more features than the Cabela's, but mine does everything I need it to do and has been doing it for the last 10 years or so with no problems.

This is going to sound really low ball but I find the basket next to my sink that I stand dishes in to dry works really well...

I don't bother with all the fancy stuff. Just clamp the barrel in the vise to clean, take apart, install or remove accessories and you can open the action on AR type rifles without having anything in the way.

I now have or have had the vises pictured or linked in this thread. For matches that I travel to, I take the MTM because it packs down smaller and I can put all of my cleaning stuff and screwdrivers/torque wrench/etc in it. For home, I either use the Tipton's Best Gun Vise (not the lower-level one or the Cabelas one) or padded jaws on the vise mounted to my workbench, depending on the task. The Tipton's Best is great for working on AR rifles.

As others have mentioned for an AR a magwell vice block (about 10$ on Amazon) a portable table top vice (22$ on Amazon) and some barrel vice jaws is about all you need.
I own a Tipton Best with the AR accessories and everythang is sorta 'jittery' when doing work on the AR and 15/22.
I bought a portion of a display stand that a member was selling on here for a little while (the magwell block for a 15/22) which works well when clamped up w/ little movement.
The 'Squirrel Daddy' magwell vise block for AR's clamps in solidly with very, very little movement and I use Tacticool 22's barrel vise clamps with my portable Irwin table top vise.
But, I use the Tipton for all my other long guns and it works well but leaves some things to be disired.
