Barrel nut loose or not ??
Well I took on the job of checking the tightness of barrel nut. Using my new barrel nut wrench from H&W Steel sold by shooboy. Well I will cut to the chase the barrel nut was not loose. Since I was that far of checking out nut tightness I decided to take the gun all the way apart. After Watching brett248vista video on taking the barrel off I decided to take on the task. I am glad I did because my barrel outside needed attention. I drive my atv with my 15-22 and it eats a lot of dust. With the gun fully disassembled you can really get to everything to clean it properly. Fully disassembled the bolt too and all 3 mags. The only thing I did not disassemble is the trigger group, cleaned as well as I could with Q-tips. Thanks to everybody for all the information.
Oh I forgot I did fully reassemble every thing with no problems. Now its time to get it dirty again.

Hope this isn't hijacking this thread; but how does the average joe tell if his barrel nut is loose. I don't want to buy the tool just to find out; can you tell by wiggling the barrel or trying to rotate it?? One other thread said accuracy is affected by it being loose. Any other indicators?? Thanks

You can try and wiggle the barrel, or perhaps your handguard might seem a little loose, that would be an indication. Don't try and turn the barrel at all, it has two lugs on it that lock it into place in the plastic upper. Ask brett248vista what will happen if you apply to much torque to the barrel ! You can PM me also if you'd like, I have one ShooWrench blem that I could cut you a great deal on ! Shoo

Well I was the average joe to. I tried wiggling the barrel also. I think the nut will have to be very loose to tell. I did not really want to buy or make a tool neither but now I am glad I bought the tool because of the dirtiness under the rails and the receiver and you can really clean the receiver end of the barrel. So I recommended buying the tools you will not be sorry. Back to the question. The only way I know to see if nut is loose is the tool.

Great to hear bulldozer !!! Brett's videos are great and should take the fear out of anyone contemplating the disassembly of the 15-22. Now go burn some lead !!! Shoo

One thing you can do is mark the barrel nut and barrel with a small dab of Whiteout, then you can inspect it to see if the markings have moved after or during a shooting session. If the markings stay in line then your barrel nut is not likely loose or the nut would continue to turn with each shooting session. Take a look at the Notable Thread Index. You'll find all sorts of tips like these.
