Have a S&W MP22, lots of fun.

Wondering if there are 22s that are much more accurate? I will put a constraint of a)saying less than $1k, and then b) less than $500.

I mainly target shoot, not competitive, but just for myself. Thanks.

My Ruger 10/22 and 77/22 are more accurate than my 15-22(not as fun though). CZ and Anschutz bolt rifles are hard to beat from what I hear, but I haven't owned either myself.

Should make you really happy for target shooting. I hear the 'accu-triggers' are really nice. My next .22lr rifle I want is a Henry lever action so this one will have to wait.

I am a .22 bolt action guy and own many of them. For the money( and I may be biased because I like Remington/Winchesters) I would look for a Remington 541T , 541T HB, or a 541S. They have all been discontinued, but can be had for 550-600 on GB( early models had dual action screws, adjustable triggers). Now the good 5 rd mags are getting hard to find , the 10 round mags kind of stink... Brian Voeklner in IA works on Remington's and for around 350 he can make a stock 541T do amazing things and it still looks very stock...

The 541S model is the "King" of that line though. They where made in the custom shop from 1974-1984( I think) and are incredible shooters... They can be had from 800-950 in my experience but really, really shoot. In fact Brian Voeklner always says to leave them alone, they are perfect shooters. In fact there where rumors that Remington used Douglas barrels on them, cant confirm though........

Also have original Winchester 52's, but you can buy one of the Japan repros for around 750 -800 and they shoot quite well, adjustable trigger and all.

Then it all comes down to some good Glass, you can go from 100 to crazy money real fast........

Thanks. Hard to believe with the price starting at $200 for 22lr, even accutrigger w scope and boresighted is $327! Would love to hear more about these?

I've owned an old Browning T Bolt for years. I got it when I was a shooting competitively in 1978 and it is by far the most accurate .22 rifle I have ever owned followed closely by the Ruger 10-22 and the S&W 15-22. They are now making the Browning T Bolt again for around $700. It is a bit pricey, but it is a quality rifle, beautifully done imo, although the new ones have some synthetic parts like the trigger which I was disapointed to see. Like with any bolt action, it will always be more accurate than a semi-auto.

Many folks swear by Savage for Rimfire's as well as centerfire bot guns.

I have a Savage Model 10 .308. other than a trigger job it makes me look like a better shooter than I am, they are a great product. I am just biased towards Remington/Winchester, but thats just me......

My 100$ Savage .22 from WallyWorld is more accurate then my 15-22, although the 15-22 is no slouch.

I just picked a Savage Mark II TR about a week ago and can't wait to see what kind of groupings I can get. I don't think it'll disappoint.

Bought it mainly for target shooting(maybe enter competition, depends on how I progress) and as a learning platform before I step up to a .308 or 30_06. Mounted a Vortex Diamondback 4-12x40 Adjustable Objective.

I have a CZ 452 on the way. Cost me just under $425. I wanted a bolt gun in left hand to concentrate on slow, accurate fire. They can apparently shoot at or under an inch at 50 yards out of the box, and are easily capable of the same size at 100 with the right skill and a little work on the gun.

I have my 15-22 for mag dumps and AR trainer, and didn't really want a big scope on it, but still felt the desire to slow down and work on fundamentals with something a little better suited.

In the under $500 category you will be hard pressed to find a better built more accurate rifle than the CZ 452s, the Savage, while very good, is not quite up to the CZ. The CZ's only shortcoming is the trigger, but a 12 dollar spring kit and 10 minutes bring it up to par.

In the under $1000 class the field is wide open with fine used rifles like the Winchester 52, Anschutz 54 & 64, Remington 541 and 513, Walther UIT et. et.

Are you looking for a lightweight sporter or a heavy target rifle?

When I went looking for a nice lightweight 22 sporter I settled on a Kimber .22 Hunter. Its a nice little mini model 70 action with the finest factory trigger I have ever felt. I have it set right now at 12 oz. I often use it in competitions with heavy target rifles. The little Kimber holds her own when playing with the big boys.



Here is a 100 yard target from a bench using cheap ammo, when I use high end stuff like Eley Tenex or RWS R50 it will shoot bugholes.

I don't think anything compares to a Anschutz rifle out of the box. I do believe a number of bench shooters use Sako Finnfire rifles. My Ruger 10/22 with Volquartsen carbon fiber tension barrel will hold it's own against any rifle.

There are hundreds of .22's out there, that can shoot tighter groups, and hit bulleye. The M&P15-22 is good. But not at their level. If you just look at semi-autos, that narrows the playing field.
I have never figured out what people mean about more accurate. Does it mean the gun feels right and I hit what I aim at. Or does it mean locked down in a test machine, it hits MOA at ~ what ever range.
I think most guns are more accurate than most think. The person shooting, the sight set up make a big difference.
That said I have many .22lr semi-autos.
Of those I have four that I can shoot better than the 15-22.

Remington 552
Marlin 60
Ruger 10-22
Winchester 290

Maybe these old 1940's -1970's guns were better made. I know most are still made, but I have old.
Maybe since I grew up shooting these traditional style rifles, I just shoot them bettter. Maybe the sights are better on these old guns.

I keep working on the 15-22. It's not bad. I think the clicks on the iron sights might be off just a bit.

The TI mags work great and have been around for years. All the others are **** IMO(except the BX25).

My Savage Mark IIF is more accurate but the 15-22 is way more fun. They both serve different purposes for me.

I own two Marlin bolt model 782 rifles in 22 magnum, these are tack drivers and then some. My son shot 12 gauge shotgun shells at 75 yards without any real training at 15 yrs old. He loved them. I modified them to a sniper rifle, one all tactical Semi-gloss black, the other Desert Camo. I may be selling them since I don't need bolt rifles, would rather have AR15 Tactical.. (going on 3 ARs now, never enought).

I have a TC Classic auto and have shot 1" groups at 100 yards with Wolf Match. That was about 5 years ago out in California on a very calm day, i.e., no flag movement. Can't remember how much I paid for that rifle but certainly less than $400. It won't shoot CCI Velocitors because of the match tolerance chamber. Other than that it shoots a wide variety of other stuff.

Here are my tack drivers, not 22LR but 22WMR, just the 22LR's bigger teenagers brother. My son at 16 was hitting 12 gauge shotgun shells at 100 yards 9 out of 10.

There are more accurate 22s, but the M&P15/22 ain't half bad. Here is a group from mine (shot yesterday) with CCI's "AR Tactical" ammo. 25 yards with no optical magnification...

The CZ bolt 22s are reasonably priced and very accurate. You might want to take a look at them before you decide what to buy.

I have a Marlin 925 bolt action in 22lr and that sucker can drive some tacks. Its straight out of the box with a cheapo scope on it and it does not disappoint. empty shotgun shells at 100yrds are no problem.

I own 23 22's and for accuracy the 15-22 is at the bottom but it is one of the first I pick up to shoot. For me its a plinker not a same hole gun. It is plenty accurate to shoot my spinners and I get pretty good groups If you shoot 5 rds like most guns. One of my fun gun to shoot !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've been very pleased, and in some ways surprised at how good my 15-22 is for accuracy out to 50 yards. With an aimpoint at that range it make very little patches quite nicely.

I also own a small farm of Savage MKIIs (Two FV-SRs, one TR, and one FSS) and began down that path given the amount of 'bang for the buck' (no pun) you get out of the MKII line. I owned a 10/22 (with TG, GM BBL, more), but between the 15-22 and my MKIIs I sold it to a friend who wanted a pre-modded gun.

I take the MKIIs out all the time to shoot 50 and 100 yard silhouette with friends. So much so that they joke saying 'Thanks for buying guns for us'. Eh, well, shooting is more fun that way anyway.

I just picked up a Ruger 77/22 and am very pleased with it.
Having had 10/22's since 1976 makes it feel very familiar.
A friend offered me his CZ but I didn't like the factory wood stock.
Just saw another buddys Remington 541T and am now looking for one as well.

For true accuracy i found a heavy target rifle to be the best but only when shooting competition. They are too cumbersome to be enjoyable in other situations. Having owned several bolt action .22s and a number of semi-autos I find the 15-22 to be more accurate than most.

With a low cost 4x scope, I have no problem dispatching a tasty furry tailed rodent at 100 yards. In fact according to my range finder one shot this week was 110 yards.

When you add to that the fun factor of the 15-22, the accuracy, and the light weight this weapon is a package that is hard to beat. With the exception of a few handguns, it is about the only thing I felt like shooting for the past few months.

I agree. About 18 months ago I started shooting Ruger Rimfire
events. Choice to buy was between the venerable 10/22 or the Rem. 597. 597 was cheaper at Wally World. Not as many venders as the 10/22 but pretty much the same parts, just a smaller selection. I then procedded to drop about $700 on it. Scott Volqartsen built me one of his carbon-fiber bull barrels, Jard supplied me a 2# trigger, Revolution thumbhole stock, 7 25-30 round magazines, and various scopes and red dot sights. I ended up with a gun that would create a clean round hole at 25 yards and an slightly egg shaped hole at 50 yards from a full 10 round magazine. As long as I didn't speed shoot it all the time. Went to the Archangel kit and got a gun that was actually lighter than a 15-22. But much harder to disassemble and/or clean. 1 week before the Ruger Rimfire World Championship I decided I needed something different for a backup. Living in the People's Republic of Maryland my only choice was a rifle with a 10 round mag and the correct answer was the S&W M&P AR15-22 PC model. Drop shipped a few 25 roung mags from RSC after shooting 400 rounds of Fed bulk through the one 10 round mag (ouch!) in one range sitting. Took both guns to New Mexico. Practice showed the 597 tended to have an occassional misfeed or two which was unacceptable at this level. Elected to shoot the S&W in the match despite the 6# trigger pull. Had no functioning problems with the 15-22, just was slower than usual. Shot the 14th best pistol score with my Buckmark but the 15-22 dropped me to 23d overall. I was still happy at my age (64 yo). I have since added a few parts including the JP "yellow springs" and various Ergo parts from the RR prize table. I have gotten better and better with the rifle till the last Steel Challenge event I won the Carbine Optic division with the 2nd fastest overall time of the event among all divisions, 4 seconds quicker than my pistol score. Needless to say this is the right tool for the job at hand. Only thing left is to add that Hogue overmolded foregrip. My 597 has been relegated to Metallic Silhouette and longer range work. I have a Savage 93 in 22WMR for hunting but for general shooting this plastic AR is a really fine shooting rifle.

I have won loads of comps with mine, here in the UK, I am ranked in the top 15 in the country for N.S.R.A LSW...

I do own a CZ 452 in .17hmr.... (wish I could get a PDC Chassis or alike for it... they do need a trigger job on them, but its cheap and easy to do) 16" barrel... great rifle !! spot on out to 200 yards... but dont get me talking about the benifits of hmr's..

15-22 ... loads of fun... great for CQB / Minirifle, but a target shooter its not...

think about WHY / WHAT FOR ?

you would put a pit pony in the Kentucky Derby !!?!!!
or a Smart Car or MPV in a Indy 500 !!???!!
