Default "Stock" Options

Forgive me, just a random thought here. What is stopping someone from sawing off the fake buffer tube, drilling and threading the lower receiver and putting a "for real" buffer tube and stock on the 15-22?

I'm sure there is a perfectly good answer for this, but at the risk of looking stupid I had to throw that question out there...

Hi Painter,
As far as cutting the buffer tube off and replacing it with a real one, I'm sure it could be done, But I don't think it would be a very good idea.
I checked it out and rejected the idea because the plastic in that area is not very thick and I thought that drilling it out might significantly weaken that end of the receiver.

If you have a collapsible stock there is nothing stopping you from pulling the butt stock off (you don't even need tools) and replacing it with any that are made for the mil spec buffer tube.

If the stock you want to put on requires a round tube you will have to sand or grind off the rib under the MP's tube.
If it needs a longer tube it would not be too hard to epoxy a piece of aluminum bar stock inside the tube to extend it.

I plan, when I can save up some cash, to replace mine with the Magpul PRS.
To do that I will have to cut off the rib and use my trusty Dremel tool to hog out a small area at the rear of the lower under the tube for a tab on the stock that's there to prevent it from rotating on the tube.
