Default Has anyone ever built a SBR 15-22?

Just curious because Im thinking about building one. Assuming the pistol is as reliable as my rifle has been, it seems like it would make a pretty sweet and relatively inexpensive plinker rifle.

Something like this, in theory

Would certainly work once you get your Form 4 approved and stamped for the SBR.

OK, now don't get me wrong, I don't mean to offend anyone, but why bother?
If its just to annoy the **** out of the anti gun leftists, more power to you and by all means have at it. Anything that annoys them is fine by me.
Otherwise can someone please enlighten me cause I just don't get it.
Maybe I'm getting old, but I have always been partial to doing things with one round.
Preferably the first one and from as far away as possible.
So unless your just looking for something different, and not necessarily better I don't see the point.
I'm not even sure I like the idea of using one as a sub caliber training tool.

For me, it's simply to have something more unique that some idiot can't walk into a gun store an just buy off the rack.

(Well... with the 15-22 they sort of can but you get the point)

Really? $200 not worth it? How much in parts did you spend so far on your firearms? Another $200 is just another day at the range I'd have to pass on.

OK, that's good enough reason for me. If you like it, more power to you.

Me I like things to be a bit more practical.
I know what the hell do I have a 15-22 for then.
Because I can.

Mostly because, well, it would just be fun.

Without sounding like a jerk, the $200 is not going to be a problem, the pain in the rear is the wait and all the forms, as well as the trust and engraving.

I've got my "serious" weapons for when things go bad, then I've got my "exotic" weapons that I take to the range when I want to show my friends some unique weaponry that you dont see every day.

The way I see it is, I paid $350 for my rifle, plus another $350-400 for the pistol (my dealer likes to discount these, I guess they dont sell too well), then another $200 for the stamp....that leaves me with an incredibly portable, unique, and fun weapon thats ultra cheap to shoot for under $1000.

I'm going to SBR my 1522 for shooting suppressed (keeping overall length about the same with 5in supressor).

Not to hi jack the thread, but wouldn't it be louder that way Phil?

I think the 15-22 SBR looks way cooler than the pistol personally. Can't wait to start seein those pics!

You can't put a stock on the pistol version. There is no way to add a receiver extension to the lower. You will need to start with a rifle and have the barrel cut to your desired length after the NFA paperwork is done and approved. I think that 9-10 inches would look just about right.

Im sure his plan is the same as mine, buy the pistol version, install pistol upper on rifle lower. Following all ATF regs, of course.

It's still SBR'ing a rifle. You'll use the rifle lower and it is the part that has to be registered as a SBR. I would have my rifle barrel cut, recrowned and threaded instead of using the pistol upper. That way, you still have a usable pistol, too. The registered lower will have to transferred as a SBR if you ever sell it, so you might as well have it permanently configured as one.

Right. I'm just gonna ask Belt_Fed to shorten, crown and thread. He'll have it done before I can finish a soda.

Ok, correct me if Im wrong, but if I did it the way I mentioned, then I'd simply have an engraved SBR lower that I could use with any number of uppers, right? My plan was to keep the pistol upper for SBR purposes, as well as the rifle upper for longer range accurate shooting. Technically, if I wanted to shoot the gun in pistol form, I could simply put the pistol upper back on the pistol lower, and have the rifle length barrel on the SBR lower. There's nothing wrong with that, right?

You have to list barrel lengths on the ATF form. All you need to do is list the SBR length, and you can legally swap for a NON SBR length. But having a receiver does not entitle you to put what ever barrel/caliber you like.

To be more specific: If you get it SBR'd with the 6in pistol barrel you can swap the factory 16" barrel whenever you like. If you plan to PERMANENTLY put the rifle barrel back on, you have to re-notify the ATF. But you can not put a 8" or 10" etc barrel on just because you had the 6" one.

Maybe, the best combo would be one 15/22 SBR'd at 9 or so inches and a Performance Center model, with its 18 inch barrel, for long range shooting. Throw a nice red dot on the SBR and a 3x9 scope in a Burris PEPR on the long range gun. I think that having two dedicated rifes would be better than a SBR and pistol that shared uppers.

I see a lot of mis-information here about NFA and SBR. Once your form 1 clears, you have a SBR lower. You can put any length upper on that lower that you desire - only a permanent change requires a letter to NFA describing the change. You can use full stock or no stock with end cap and shoot it like a pistol. Makes no difference once you have a SBR. Been there, done that and have several NFA in different configurations.

Really? How would you account for discrepancies in section 4e and 4f then?
