Default Amateurs talk hardware, professionals talk software.

I'm new to this site and I see a few trends. Lots of talk of accessories and not a lot of techniques and reasons behind the accessories. I hate a heavy gun, hence why I purchased a plastic AR and leave it basically slick. I'm all for tools if it does something for me that makes me more effective at the job and I'm interested in reasons behind some of the setups folks have. I think an interesting thread would be photos of the rifle and a synopsis of items and why they chose to put the item on the rifle and in that spot other than just looking cool. Form follows function for me. Example I'm seeing Aimpoints and EOTechs mounted reward for much closer eye relief and vertical hand grips mounted almost next to the magazine well. Let's talk theory guys, because from my experience those mistakes are for amateurs.

There is an old saying, "You can attract more flies with honey than with vinegar."

One of the selling points of AR style rifles is all the stuff you can add on to it, while you may like to run yours naked, others choose not too. It's all about choice, if others don't choose the same thing you do there is no need to call them names.

Sound Suppressor: I prefer to shoot without hearing protection. I chose a dedicated rimfire can because of the lighter weight than a .223 can.

MBUS: Light weight (factory sights weighed about a half pound).

MicroDot: Small and Light. Positioned on the receiver where Aimpoint and LaRue puts em . I chose a 1x red dot for this rifle because I like to bounce cans around and shoot with both eyes open.

AFG: I initially purchased the AFG because I just wanted to try it. I found the angle to be more comfortable for me than a broomstick or gripping the handguard. The AFG puts my thumb high on the handguard which I like and I think I have more control with a high thumb position. It also works well for a tape switch to be positioned in the channel between the 9 and 12 rail. I positioned the AFG more rearward to be less fatiguing during long shooting sessions than when positioned far forward. The AFG is in the "Theory Based Products" section at Magpul.

Hogue grip: Perfect fit.

That's how this amateur does it, PigTooth, let's see your rifle and explanation.

oh... almost forgot... the band on the mag is from a can of LaRue Index Clips. No reason... it was just laying there on my desk... well... ya know.

Or maybe, just maybe, that is where the individual that owns and fires that particular weapon finds the Aimpoint or Eotech to work best. And perhaps the vertical hand gripp mounted close to the magazine well is where that particular weapon balances the best for that shooter. You really can't judge the effectiveness of a particular weapon until you know the details of what its intended use is, and the individual using it. Would an STI 1911 setup of IPSC be the best gun for a detective working undercover? Of course not. But if that same detective is shooting an IPSC match on the weekened, then yes. The real amateur mistake? Coming to a forum that has among its members some of the world's foremost authorities on firearms, tactics, techniques, and equipment and start calling us "amateurs" and attempting to impress us with your talk of "theory." There is no "theory" in a gunfight, son, there's a winner and a loser. Grow up.

Pigtooth, I think you might be in the wrong forum. Your post might be valid for M4Carbine.net, but this is the S&W M&P 15-22 forum.
This rifle is not a 5.56 AR-15 whose components meet the TDP.
It is not a Colt, a BCM, a DD, a Noveske, or an LMT.
The M&P 15-22 is a range toy and/or a small game rifle. You will not do high risk SWAT entries, you will not take down a meth lab, and you will not engage the Taliban at 400m with this rifle. You should accept it for what it is and realize that people buy it to have fun with it. Once you do, you'll have a blast shooting it and accessorizing it.

If you search the threads you will see many on thecnique, breathing, trigger control ect. I think everybody here would welcome good infomation on something they may be doing "wrong" but in maybe a more friendly way. It is a trainer platform, but we all have fun just getting them all gussied up too. If you have a military background, first off thank you for your service, and if you want to share info or start a thread like you mentioned I would read it, but take it down a notch, most of us are here to learn and share info in a more laid back kind of way.

this man came here with some logically sound questions, i think you are all wrong to jump down his throat. lets face it, alot of people here like to put useless accessories on their guns. Its like buying toys when you're a kid. Could he have done without the sarcastic undertones? yeah probably, but get over it.

Welcome to amateur hour Piggy. Im glad someone finally has the guts to stand up and tell it like it is. This forum if full of "helpful" members, always giving good advice, and offering encouraging supportive comments. Im sick of it. I came to this forum because I was looking for some one to criticize me rifle, and tell me im doing it all wrong. I cant wait for you so to look at my gun and really let me have it. Again, thanks for coming into the forum, and letting us all know that you are the new pro in town.

Im just kidding You kind of sound like an ***. Probably a good idea to do a little bit of searching around here, and get a better idea of the content and people that make this, IMO, the BEST 15-22 forum on the net.

I did mean the "welcome to the forum" part though. Seriously, welcome.

He came here with logically sound questions for a different weapon platform and perspective.
If we were in a LEO/mil forum discussing the proper methods to prepare and accessorize a 6920/M4A1 for duty, then he'd be bang on.
But we aren't.
Sure, there's merit to some of his questions, but assuming we're "amateurs" for what we do with our fun gun is silly and misses the main point of the rifle. Some may buy it as a serious AR-15 platform trainer. Most will buy it as something to have fun with at the range instead of (or in addition to) their 5.56.
It was the initial attitude that I think rubbed most people the wrong way.

Actually, no, he didn't. He suggested pictures and explanations of why other people accesorize their weapons the way they do. Had that been presented in a way that suggested he was looking for knowledge or open discussion, it would have been a good thing. However, by calling people "amateurs" and saying they were making "mistakes" prior to hearing those explanations implies a closed mind-set regarding doing it any way other than his. Useless in one instance may be life-saving in another. My strobing flashlight may appear to you to be a useless accessory, but I can guarantee you that it was invaluable while doing building clearing in Iraq.

Possibly, but if you make a harsh statement, expect harsh reactions.

True, but to deem those accessories "mistakes" by "amateurs" without knowing anything about their use or the user smacks of prejudging and a holier-than-thou attitude.

Eaxactly, but what makes your toys better than my toys? The OP didn't simply ask to see other people's toys, he made a judgement call that they were amateurs simply because they didn't play with those toys the way he thought they should. I see nothing to get over: if he wants to apologize for his arrogant tone and start over, I'm sure he will enjoy the Forum. If he want to continue with his egocentric viewpoint that his way is so much better than anyone else's, I'm sure that the Mall Ninja would love to have a new best bud. Either way I'm not going to lose any sleep over it.

I'm sorry painterly, but your optic is too far forward by one rail slot. You must rectify this situation immediately or the Ninja Elite Rifle Division (N.E.R.D.) will be notified.

No trouble... That's more in line with the good natured spirit of S&W Forum when dealing with these type threads. Well done! I might even have to find pics of my Tacticandle. Hmmm... where did that rascal go to... oh here it is...
