Hey Guys.... new to the forum, did a search on here to see why you guys have choosen the M&P over the Colt.... but didn't really find anything. I did find a couple of write-ups and video's on the net...

I haven't purchased my rifle yet. Obviously its down to these two. Sell me on the S&W.... why is it the better rifle?

The S&W not only looks like an AR-15, it functions like one! You can also drop in a lot of parts that you would from any other AR like a diff. trigger, stock, etc. I remember seeing the inside of the Colt and was just turned off..I like the ease of the S&W's break down. I've been hearing that Colt shooters are happy.

Both platforms have some really nice items. I wish I could combine the two of them to make exactly what I'm looking for!

When I got mine, you couldn't find anything positive anywhere about the Colt except that it looked good. The controls on the 15-22 replicate the controls of a real AR more completely. The 15-22 is missing a functional forward-assist. The bolt release on the Colt is for looks only and serves no functional purpose. The 15-22 accepts many AR parts. It uses a mil-spec receiver extension, allowing the use of any mil-spec stock. You can use AR grips and fire control parts (small-pin only 0.154").
If you decide that you like the Colt, you can also look at the H&K versions. They are also made by Umarex.

The real question is if you want a .22lr rifle that works amost exactly like a AR15 - 5.56mm rilfe what would you buy?
The answer always goes S&W.

Before I bought my 15-22 I went to all of the local shops and just asked the guys working their thoughts on AR22s. Multiple shops had customers return their Colts. The Sig seemed to have a pretty good reputation though. The main thing that stuck out was that nobody returned the S&W ... sold.

I bought the Colt before the S&W was available. It does everything I've asked of it and works fine. Given the choice I probably would have bought the Smith and saved a few bucks. Just wasn't an option back then.

I think he means the returned Colts had some sort of malfunction or part breakage. I remember seeing a lot of threads regarding that when they first came out. I don't know of a gun shop that takes guns back "just because you don't like it" either.

Yes, returned Colts were due to malfunctions.

I have both and I can you this from my experience. The S&W is head and shoulders above the Colt. I know you would expect to read only good things about the S&W on these forums. However, I have no problem at all calling a fecal log a fecal log.

I also have both. I shoot the 15-22 and the colt is at a gun shop on consignment.

good thread. I was considering searching for a Colt at the gunshow this weekend, but I think I will spend my money elsewhere this go around.

What is missing or can't be added to the 15-22 other than a non functioning forward assist?
The 15-22 can even have a functioning dust cover added. The Colt dust cover kind of sort of almost works.
For practice and muscle memory, go with the S&W.
For identical looks of an M4 go with the Colt.

Probably likes the weight and the outer construction. I know many people that have problems with a lot of plastic.

I dont know about the Colt - but I love my S&W - the Sig is also a great gun - downside being the bolt doesnt remain open when mag is empty which is a pita in competition. The other downside is that they are not compatible with AR parts. Now the H&K looks and feels like a real gun - but I haven't shot one so I dont know if Umarex was able to get that part of the equation correct.

The bolt stays open after the last round, but you have to use the charging handle to load a new round when a fresh mag is inserted.
The mags don't drop free, you have to pull them out.
The safety is a 180 degree swing from safe to fire on the Colt (supposed to be changed) and 90 degrees on the H&K.
The bolt does not come out for cleaning.

Well I popped for a M&P 15-22 MOE yesterday. I can't wait to take delivery of it! The MOE model got me the threaded barrel that I wanted.... and some other parts that I don't really care for, but will be easy to swap out and sell.

Before I bought mine I read that the Colt has a thin barrel with a shroud that tends to string shots vertically as it heats up. The S&W has a solid one piece barrel. Thats what sold me!

I've always liked Smith&Wesson handguns, revolvers for the most part (Hi,I'm a K-Frame junkie) the M&P 15-22 has the controls where they should be and function as they should function.

I liked how the "walther colt" was a dead ringer for an M-4 carbine (only much lighter) but the take down was a hassle and a half,the controls didn't really work,and at the end of the day I wouldn't feel right walking around with a "Non-AR" AR if you follow.

The Colt was also $620.00 (local shop's price,I passed on the colt and bought a mossberg .410 instead for about half the price)

Update. I finally had to get rid of Colt. Too many malfunctions. In all fairness I did give the little Colt a chance. But she had to go! That was the worst purchase I have ever made in along time. The M&P 15-22 is hard to beat. Not just my opinon, it's a cold hard fact!

EVERY dealer in my area has a 7-day no questions asked return policy...just FYI...it is rare but not unheard of

I have shot both--i just didnt care for the Colt...and it pains me to say that to some degree because my Dad's Colt Commando is one of my favorite all-time guns to shoot ( before i bought my 15-22!)

In my view the M&P is an AR...the Colt is a 'clone'

So they have to re-sell it as a used gun or do they clean it up and still sell it at the same price? I have no clue how that works.

they usually sell as a "relisted"...meaning its technically used but at a higher price than a true USED trade in would be....

this is actually how i bought my 15-22! somebody traded for the Colt so i got mine @ a better price

I like my M-4 Colt. Once you read the owners manual, and use the adjustment screw in the action as noted, reliability issues go away with almost any ammo. Mine is accurate and fun to shoot.

Gee, I wish I had known that before I bought mine. Reliable thru 1000's of rounds, and one inch groups, sometimes less at 50 yards....What was I thinking...LOL

no, honestly!

I've heard- first hand - of more than a few 'bad' expierences with a colt M4 22 to stay well clear of it.
If you're having fun with yours, so mutch the better!!

I'll stick to my 15-22

i know what I was thinking...I wanted something that was functional, customizable, easy to clean, and easy to find magazines for....

Colt only matched 25% of my criteria--and thats a failing grade for me...but then again this is an M&P site...if you want somebody to sing its praises head to a Colt forum--

as stated before, i shot both and was not impressed with the Colt--but to each his own

I think Colt found a low cost maker(Umarex), and tried to use the Colt name to make $$$

I have always found the Umarex a little lacking???

I have bought a Sig 522, and a GSG 1911.
Love both. Use these to practice with.

I like what S&W did with the M&P15-22. It is a real AR. It works almost exactly like any AR. Shoot your 15-22 well, then pick up an AR in 5.56mm. You will be way ahead of the game.
I can go out and shoot 500 rounds in my 15-22, 100 in my GSG 1911, and spend ~ $25.00.

What would it cost to put 500 5.56mm, and a 100 45.ACP down range???
