Out of Battery Discharge S&W 15-22
We were plinking with the .22's and my brother had an OBD with his new S&W 15-22 that blew the shell casing almost in half and the extractor right off of the bolt. He received hot powder gasses in the face, but had his glasses on and avoided any injury. He is off to the gunsmith on Thursday to have the rifle looked at as it appears to missing some parts of the extractor.

OBD
Yep. See the several threads on this. Too bad that S&W doesn't have a goods parts list and "exploded diagram" so we could fix this ourselves!

Well that's a bummer alright. Especially on a " NEW " rifle and to have be without the use of it to send it in for repair. The summers in my area are so short that if I had to send my 12-22 in for a repair the summer would be over when I got it back from S&W and I really don't use a .22LR much if at all in the winter ( 8 months long ) . It would be nice if we had the parts so we could do it ourselves seeing as this a pretty common problem. ( hint hint S&W )

Hey Cap'n....sorry to hear that...what is your serial #? It helps us all figure out if it was an older model... What fun is a gun that explodes in your face? No excuse....we're talking Smith & Wesson! Just goes to show, it's just a name and a price tag. They got some great engineers over there, some real supergeniuses....They keep it all "hush hush" as to what their "fix" is too. Sounds like someone is gonna sue them sooner or later.

We could probably use a sub-sub-forum on M&P15-22 out of battery discharges...

Although my fears aren't completely deminished, I have since shot my M&P 15-22 at a range again. This time I ran 200rds of cci minimag round tips thru it without a single ftf, ftfeed, or fte. For the heck of it I tried federal bulk hollow points and I had no luck at all with those, unshootable junk ammunition- at least for this rifle. They shoot fine out of my Smith .22 pistol.

I refuse to fear about my rifle blowing up. I don't want to end up looking at the bolt after every shot!
Sorry about your rifle, OP. Really sucks to hear about these things because I love my rifle and want everyone else to enjoy theirs too!

Re: O.O.B.D
He was using Armscore 36gr.HP's at the time, but I don't think that was the problem as we have fired several hundred rounds without a problem. Both of our rifles love the stuff and they will shot 10 rnd. quarter sized groups at 25yds.
Several other brands we tried shot all over the paper, Federal Bulk, CCI x 2, and some old Rem.

IMHO I would rather shoot ammo that maybe doesn't group quite as well than have a OBD and have to send my rifle back to S&W. I know maybe it isn't all the ammo's fault but why press your luck.
It is my opinion that maybe a OBD could be caused by an accumulatiion of burnt powder residue on the bold face recess where the shell is held by the bolt or a accumulation of same residue/gunk in the breech end of the barrel notch where the extractor rests when the bold is in full battery. Also any binding of the bolt on the slides due to lack of lube and gunk could cause this also. The loading ramp seems to build up a lot also so I always take a cleaning kit anytime I am going to fire over 200 continuous rounds and give the rifle a quick cleaning/lube before firing another string. Some .22 rimfire ammo is really pretty dirty and may add to the buildup faster than other ammo. I know this is a pain in the ___ but so far it has worked for me.
This little MP 15-22 is a fine tuned rifle and more prone to such problems than a full sized AR which is not quite as fussy on the cleaning thing. Not saying I am right on any of this theory but maybe any of these conditions could hold the bolt open enought to cause a OBD. Just my 2cents worth.

Got mine back Friday. It has a new recoil spring and there are now the "two holes" in the bolt carrier. I put about 200 round through it and had no problems. I appreciate S&W so far. We'll see if the firearm continues be a joy to shoot.
