Default First Time Shooting New 15-22 Pistol... Had a few Issues

So, we went to the range to shoot our new 15-22p for the first time. I had given the gun a good cleaning and a proper oiling (just as I do on our 15-22 rifle) and we were good through the first 3 or 4 mags of the new Winchester M-22, but then we started to have some issues. The big problem seemed to be that the bolt would not travel back enough, so the hammer would not go fully back and the trigger would not reset. I do not believe we had any FTFires on the ammo as the manually ejected rounds had no indication of any FP strike and all rounds fired when reloaded. In comparing the pistol to our rifle I did notice that the bolt is a bit different in that it has less mass, and the spring is painted white instead of blue and seems a bit lighter when pulling back the charge handle. I believe that these differences would be to compensate for the lost back pressure of the shorter barrel. Yes? No? We also had a couple of FTEs (stove-piped).

I am not too concerned at this point because the gun is brand new. I would imagine that all the springs are a bit tight and the feed ramp and ejector may need a little wearing in as well as the surface of the bolt that runs along the hammer. Not to mention that my son's mantra is fire as fast as you can! We shot 300 rounds of the M-22 and I feel that it performed very well. I just wish I had stuck with our trusty SuperX 40gr HPs so I wasn't dealing with another variable. I am going to clean the gun and take it out again with the SuperX for another 300 rounds. I really do like the gun, and my son loves it! Our first couple outings with the 15-22 rifle were not stellar, but now that gun is near perfect every time we shoot it. I guess I am looking for any suggestions, advice, tips, tricks, hints, and even a little reassurance. Thank You in advance!

Default 15-22p

I 've not had any issues with the pistol I bought yet so far but I have only used the CCI mini-mags. They are what I started shooting when I first purchased the rifle version.

So we did another range session with the gun shooting 300 rounds of SuperX (which has been totally reliable in our 15-22), and it is time to send it back to S&W. As before, we didn't really have any problems with feeding or firing, but we had a bunch of FTE's as well as many occasions where the trigger would not reset after firing. I hope S&W can make the gun right because even with all the issues we still really like it.

Trying using some different ammo first, before you send it back. Winchester's 22 ammo is known to be pretty ****** stuff.

Try using some Federal Bulk ammo or CCI Blazer or CCI Mini Mag's.

If any of those 3 work, then your problem is ammo related.

Just a thought..

The SuperX (and all the other recommended ammo) is flawless in my 15-22 rifle. I would expect the same from the pistol. All ammo that chambered fired just fine. My analysis says the gun has mechanical issues. I have plenty of other guns to shoot, including our new Savage 93 in 17HMR, so I will let S&W deal with the problem and update with the results. Thanks for the advice though.

I have put over 5 thousand round CCI Stingers with no issues, maybe I'm lucky.

With my trigger-happy 12-year-old I can't afford to shoot stingers.

I'm sure Smith will take care of the problem. My 15-22p will eat anything I feed it. Have it over a year now with no issues. Great little gun!!!!!!!!

Just wanted to note that we put 600 rounds of the new Winchester M-22 through our 15-22 rifle yesterday and had exactly ZERO failures of any kind!

The pistol doesn't like rounds that don't deliver enough back pressure to fully cycle the bolt. Before I fitted the silencer I had lots of these hassles and couldn't dream of shooting anything other than premium high velocity loads. Now it eats anything and thrives on sub-sonics.

I suspect that once the recoil spring wears a bit the relaibility with spotty ammo will evaporate.

But I still have the issue of stovepipin' FTEs. The gun is off to S&W right now.
