Default MY BRAND NEW 15-22

I picked up my 15-22 today at about noon:30pm, went home grabbed my gear and a few more things. I got to the range about 1:30pm. I spent about an hour on my other 2 guns i took with me then pulled out my 15-22 ( oohhs & aahs in the back round)

First let me say this thing is built great . I'm really glad i made the decision to get this rifle instead of the mossberg 702.

I took cci mini mags, federal bulk 550 red box, federal automatch, and american eagle with me.

Anyway first i loaded up some CCI mini mags 40 gr. and the first magazine i had 3 ftfeeds, and every magazine was like that ( i also got 2-10 round shorties). It was horrible, I fought the whole way just to shoot those 100.

Then i loaded up the automatch and out of the box of 325 rounds i had about 4 ftfires. it was great.

Then moved onto the federal red box of 550. Once again it was great i shot about 150 rounds with no problems.

Then loaded up 150rounds of american eagle and once again flawless...

so at about 6pm i start getting text msgs from my gf asking if i'm ever coming home or what... i didnt know what to say. So all in all i had a great blast of a time. I met 2 other people at the range with 15-22's and it was an instant connection. I even got approached by a couple of other people about the 15-22, so i let them shoot it and they were very impressed.

I'm not gonna give up on the mini mags, I'm gonna chalk it up to this being a new rifle and it just needed to be broken in. But to me it seemed like the wax coating on the mini mags was causing the problem.

But before i go I just wanted to say i'm 110% glad with my new toy!!!

Thanks for sharing your experience with the new rifle. I almost forgot what it was like with my new 15-22 and it hasn't been that long ago.
That is pretty crazy with the CCI MMs as that is what I started with and have yet to have a FTfire, FTfeed or a FTE and that has been 600 rounds through my rifle.
Enjoy the fun.

Congrats on your new little friend. The gas pain is strong from the 15-22, the price, the quality, it has to be one of the best bangs for the buck out there. I wish my son would not be so into tossing bigger lead down range.

Please keep us up to date with what you find works well as you go.

Congrats again and bring home a bunch of flowers for your wife on days like that.

I fired 250 out of 250 with no issues at all on my new 15-22. I used CCI MiniMag and the MiniMagHP only.

In all cases I paid very close attention to my mag loading. Made sure that all rounds were staggered as described here.

dogg1er, since CCI was the first stuff you used, do you think your mag loading technique got better with practice? Did you fire any CCI at the end?

Well i ordered 2-10 round shorties from 44 mag which i received before i got my 15-22, and i watched the videos that brett248 vista made on how to load so i was able to get in some practice with loading.

I only took 100rounds of cci MM's with me i figured that 100 rounds of each ammo would give me a good idea of what my 15-22 would run good on.

I wont rule out that it was my loading technique, or the gun was new or the wax coating... but i do have more of the cci MM's in stock so i will see how those go now that my gun has about 600 rounds thru it.

I plan on going back to the range in a few days so i will post an update.

Default finally made it back.

OK i finally made it back to the range.

This time i took 200 rounds of cci mini mags, i also took federal bulk pack(red box), automatch, and american eagle.

I loaded up my magazines with the cci mini mags first (the last time i shot these it didnt go well at all) i popped the mag in pulled the charging handle and click-nothing, the round didnt even chamber all the way so i ejected that round and same thing for the next 4 rounds. Then with 5 rounds left in the mag it goes bang for the remainder of the mag. I reload the first 5 that didnt work and they go bang. For the next 190 rounds the gun ran flawless.

As far as the federal bulk pack, the automatch, and the american eagle the gun performed to perfection.

I shot 1225 consecutive rounds with absolutely no problems what so ever, the gun hiccupped for the first 5 rounds then got into gear...

I'm glad I didn't give up on the cci mini mags. I'm assuming the gun just had to work out its own kinks, and now that it did ...WOW...

i also did a little toying with some different ammo yesterday--since around here Federal 525 packs are like unicorns! I tried
Winchesters 333 pack, Winchester Wildcats, and some Remington Vipers...CCI minimags havent given me too many troubles but my Walther P22 HATES them so i stick to something i can cross-load

I will say that by far the Federal Bulk has been the best ammo but the Winchester Wildcats performed very very well...in a pinch you might try them if they are available...and the Vipers actually turned out to be a LOT of fun...more muzzleflash and a felt recoil like nothing i have tried

Congrats on the new acquisition and welcome to the club

dogg1er,

You picked up the gun and went to the range - did you clean the rifle to get rid of the preservative oil the S&W factory puts on the 15-22? That sort of stickey stuff can cause some of the problems you were having. Just putting another possibility out there for the problems you had.

No i picked up the gun and went to the range, no cleaning or tinkering with it.

I have done this with all my guns and have had no problems (and I own 2 Hi-points) with any of them.

I wouldn't rule out that maybe that might have been part of it, but what ever happened the gun has worked out its own issues and I am very happy with it.

Default trigger

you might want to fix the trigger creep, i did it and it really makes the trigger pull crisper and its super cheap from your local acehardware or other shop. And its really fast to do and you will notice the difference the first time shooting after

The problem with the video and the trigger creep is that it is only evident in the SAFE position. All 15-22s I have seen demonstrate this characteristic in the SAFE position. My 15-22 had zero creep in the FIRE position even before my installation of the JP springs, as well as other 15-22s I have checked. Look at 00:14 in the video and note the position of the safety. It's on SAFE. I'll bet that if many of you that check you 15-22 in the FIRE position (after determining the weapon is clear or with the upper off the lower) will have zero creep. To me this is a fix to a non-existing problem on many 15-22s, because trigger creep in the SAFE position is meaningless. You can't fire the weapon on SAFE. For those of you that have creep in the FIRE position, I suppose the fix is worthwhile.

Page 26 of my manual says preservative/oil should be removed before initial firing. I could tell by the feel of mine when I first pulled it out of the box that it was sticky. Did a thorough cleaning and had no problems. Glad you're happy with it. Treat it right and it will treat you right. Cheers.
